Shays Cries "Biased Media" ... Biased against Whom?

by: CaptCT

Fri Aug 31, 2007 at 18:50:52 PM EDT

Shays made an appearance in front of a group of Greenwich seniors and, despite the Stamford Advocate's and Greenwich Time's see-no-evil coverage of his Hatch Act violations cover-up, Shays still complained about the "biased media."

Neither the Greenwich Time nor Stamford Advocate have covered the story surrounding Lurita Doan and Shays' cover-up of Doan's and Karl Rove's Hatch Act violations. Heck, they even turned down letters to the editor about such stuff (h/t Ann Galloway) ... so it makes me wonder who the media is biased against?

According to Shays, here are the issues that the media should be covering:

Along with global warming and road kill by drunken drivers - inconvenient truths - Shays declared issues needing to be continually explored and reported on in depth by the media include over-population, illegal immigrants and Islamic terrorists.

Never mind the Iraq War, health care, affordable housing, illegal wiretaps, traffic on I-95, or violations of the Hatch Act covered up by Chris Shays.

Oh yeah, and the biased media -- we need to do something about that too.

Media Bias (3.00 / 1)
Members of the right wing continue to complain about a biased liberal media, even while Rupert Murdoch and any number of other media moguls have pretty much eliminated what once was a responsible press. We now are treated daily to propaganda, not news -- in which people with right wing agendas spout the Administration's talking points without bothering to verify their veracity.

Of all people, Shays shouldn't complain about media bias because, while a reality, this sad fact actually has helped him enormously; he pretty much has continued to receive a free pass that he doesn't deserve: Most of the media continues to describe him as the "moderate" that he hasn't been for sveral years.  Rest assured, if the media ever returns to its more responsible roots -- and actually conducts serious investigative reporting -- Shays would be toast!

puhlease .. if he stopped (4.00 / 1)

Greenwich Time has been a problem for years (4.00 / 1)
Last year the paper refused to run a letter from the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters endorsing Democratic state representative candidate (151st district- Cos Cob in central Greenwich).  Editorial page editor Joy Haenlein stated that the paper didn't print endorsements, a statement that was blatantly false.  The paper has run endorsements of Chris Shays from the national League of Conservation Voters for several years.  And the paper also thought it not newsworthy that Krumeich's opponent, Republican incumbent and deputy minority leader Dolly Powers, was named one of the ten worst legislators in the state general assembly on her environmental voting record, and refused to write an article about the designation.  But the paper didn't stop there: it censored mention of Powers' "ten worst" ranking from this writer's letter to the editor without telling me of their intent to do so.  That amounted to blatant protection.

Now the editorial board ended up endorsing Ed Krumeich.  But clearly Powers was being protected by keeping negative news about her out of the press.  And despite the endorsement of Krumeich, the paper's Sunday front page was filled with three color pictures: of Republicans Chris Shays, Dolly Powers, and Bill Nickerson.  No photos of endorsed candidates Ed Krumeich or Diane Farrell, and a photo of Ned Lamont was buried in the inside pages.

Krumeich ended up losing by just over a hundred votes out of some 9,000 cast.

Journalistic ethics is just not what Greenwich Time does.

what do you expect? (3.00 / 1)
it's GREENWICH. More Republicans per square inch than grubs (and there's BIG LAWNS out there in them parts!)

Appearances (3.00 / 1)
Great post, as it exposes the thin line walked: The APPEARANCE of fairness behind a cloak of partisanship.  That's worse than saying, "We are a conservative Republican paper, and we make no bones about it."

As for journalistic ethics, I think this concept disappeared shortly after publication of the Pentagon Papers. News pages of The New York Times really aren't any better; The Times runs more stories, but no longer does the due diligence required to verify what writers choose to print; however, in the case of The Times, at least readers can find dissenting views on the OpEd and editorial pages. Not so here in the "burbs."

What TV Does Shays Watch? (3.00 / 1)
How can anyone say that Illegal Immigration or Islamic Terrorists don't receive enough media coverage? I would say these issues receive much more attention than they deserve.
