Firefighters to Endorse Dodd

by: Missy's Brother

Mon Aug 27, 2007 at 21:43:34 PM EDT

http://www.politico....

Chris Dodd's campaign is set this week to announce a quite major labor endorsement: the International Association of Firefighters, according to a source familiar with the plans.

The endorsement comes as something as a surprise. Labor insiders had expected the union, one of labor's big endorsements, to go with one of the front-runners.

But the Connecticut senator is an old ally, and authored what's probably the most important piece of legislation in a decade for the IAFF: The 2000 FIRE Act, which channels federal money to local fire departments.

It's not set in stone yet.

A spokesman for the IAFF said he wasn't familiar with the plans.

Dodd campaign spokesman Hari Sevugan responded only that "We haven't been endorsed by the IAFF."

Dodd's a player (4.00 / 1)
This makes Dodd a big player in Iowa. The IAFF was big for Kerry in '04 and in a split race Dodd may get some traction. It's an uphill climb to say the least but I think there is now a much better chance that Dodd will meet the 15% viability threshold in various Iowa precincts instead of the single digits where he is often shown in polls.

This is very good news and I'm happy for Chris Dodd and the many good people in the Dodd campaign.

Interesting (4.00 / 2)
Labor has sometimes been reluctant to pick a perceived underdog early in a primary. Ostensibly this is due to the stigma of having your organization associated with a "loser". However this reluctance can be a breeding ground for complacency and once could argue if you can bring issues that are important to you to the forefront during a primary, then that's a benefit to your membership - and potentially to the party as well. I was hoping this endorsement would go to Edwards (who I'm leaning towards) but I'm glad to see IAAF is willing to (or is at least considering to) go out on a little bit of a limb and not just play safe.

"There's class warfare, all right, but it's my class, the rich class, that's making war, and we're winning." - Warren Buffet

have you seen all the fire fighter grants from Joe L and Chris D post election? (4.00 / 1)
Lots of news photos and blurbs with the two of them together happily giving grants to various towns' FDs.
