Jim Himes Hosts Firedoglake Book Salon, Today 5pm ET

by: tparty

Sun Aug 26, 2007 at 14:25:48 PM EDT

The Political BrainIn a cool bit of online outreach, Jim Himes will be hosting today's FDL Book Salon discussion at 5pm ET today.

The book being discussed this week is The Political Brain by author Drew Westen, who will be joining Jim and the Firedoglake community for the livechat. Westen's book is concerned with the psychological and emotional aspects of political communication, and how Democrats in particular need to address their historical lack of success in these areas. Westen has been posting for a few months at HuffPo, and the book has received plaudits from party figures as disparate as Howard Dean and Bill Clinton.

Jane Hamsher from Friday:

Jim is a great candidate and a thoughtful guy, and when he was here a few weeks ago chatting with Howie Klein in a Blue America session he mentioned that he was reading this book so we thought we'd have him back to discuss it.

That's today at 5pm at FDL... stop by and say hi.

Hey Maura... (0.00 / 0)
maybe we should read this for our first progressive book club selection...

Interesting discussion (0.00 / 0)
And if anyone needed a true sign of the value of Westen's book note that David Brooks (8/26/07) was assigned (himself) the duty of attacking reviewing the book for cultural conservatives everywhere.

As the canary in the coalmine for the fading fortunes of the republican party whatever Brooks finds fault with immediately grows in importance.

I enjoyed it, too (4.00 / 1)
And I think it's a great sign that Jim Himes was positioned as sort of the "champion" of Westen's thesis.

If candidates like Himes start talking like Democrats and doing so with passion and the progressive forces in the Party propel them into office, we will have made great strides towards remaking the Party into a new, more effective force for positive change in our society.

The alternative is backing with clothespin on nose an unending string of wishy-washy DLC weenies.
