| Whether it was their vote in August, or their vote in November?
Anecdotally, we've all heard from Lieberman voters who are aghast at the vengeful far-right-wing path Joe has taken since November. The man who wanted to "bring the troops home" is keeping them in Iraq, and wants to send them to Iran. The man who wanted to "work across party lines to get things done" has thwarted true bipartisan efforts on issues from Iraq to Alberto Gonzales. The man who was never in Connecticut before he was faced with a primary challenge... is now never in Connecticut again.
And the man who self-righteously claimed he would "die a Democrat" is now repeatedly threatening to caucus with Republicans - all in the service of the failing and flailing administration of Bush, Cheney, and Rove.
As Jonathan Singer points out at MyDD, there's been virtually no polling in Connecticut on this very basic question:
So what we'd like to see at this point is fairly simple. In the next poll from Quinnipiac of the Hartford Courant or whoever else does polling in the state of Connecticut, we'd like to see voters asked whether they still stand by their decision to vote elect Joe Lieberman. This question could follow a statement about Lieberman's strong support for George W. Bush's Iraq escalation or his calls for military action against Iran, but maybe not also. Perhaps a balanced question that pits Lieberman's long service or committee chairmanship or perceived centrism against his overt hawkishness would be more to their liking. Who knows.
Now I do know that I, for one, would be someone who would admit to having different feelings today than a year ago. Mind you, I was no vocal supporter of Senator Lieberman, either in the primary or the general election. That said, I thought that the specter of a primary challenge would force him to come home to the base and moderate some of his hard right positions, particularly in the area of foreign policy. Clearly, I was wrong in this belief.
Contact the Courant and Quinnipiac at either pollinginstitute-at-quinnipiac-dot-edu or jfrank-at-courant-dot-com, and politely let them know the questions the voters of Connecticut really want answered on this one-year anniversary of the primary.
If you could ask this question in the next Q-Poll, how would you phrase it?
Update: Chris Bowers piles on:
Send an email, make a call, or do both, whichever you prefer. Be polite, and don't demand any specific wording of the question. Just tell them that you think, given Joe Lieberman's continued support for the Iraq war, it would be worthwhile to see if any of his supporters in 2006 now regret how they voted. I know it is already in the evening, but perhaps we can fill up their inboxes, thus giving them something to think about in the morning. And if we don't hear back, well, then we can keep the calls and emails going. |
