On This Anniversary, How Many Lieberman Voters Regret Their Vote?

by: tparty

Wed Aug 08, 2007 at 13:07:32 PM EDT

Whether it was their vote in August, or their vote in November?

Anecdotally, we've all heard from Lieberman voters who are aghast at the vengeful far-right-wing path Joe has taken since November. The man who wanted to "bring the troops home" is keeping them in Iraq, and wants to send them to Iran. The man who wanted to "work across party lines to get things done" has thwarted true bipartisan efforts on issues from Iraq to Alberto Gonzales. The man who was never in Connecticut before he was faced with a primary challenge... is now never in Connecticut again.

And the man who self-righteously claimed he would "die a Democrat" is now repeatedly threatening to caucus with Republicans - all in the service of the failing and flailing administration of Bush, Cheney, and Rove.

As Jonathan Singer points out at MyDD, there's been virtually no polling in Connecticut on this very basic question:

So what we'd like to see at this point is fairly simple. In the next poll from Quinnipiac of the Hartford Courant or whoever else does polling in the state of Connecticut, we'd like to see voters asked whether they still stand by their decision to vote elect Joe Lieberman. This question could follow a statement about Lieberman's strong support for George W. Bush's Iraq escalation or his calls for military action against Iran, but maybe not also. Perhaps a balanced question that pits Lieberman's long service or committee chairmanship or perceived centrism against his overt hawkishness would be more to their liking. Who knows.

Now I do know that I, for one, would be someone who would admit to having different feelings today than a year ago. Mind you, I was no vocal supporter of Senator Lieberman, either in the primary or the general election. That said, I thought that the specter of a primary challenge would force him to come home to the base and moderate some of his hard right positions, particularly in the area of foreign policy. Clearly, I was wrong in this belief.

Contact the Courant and Quinnipiac at either pollinginstitute-at-quinnipiac-dot-edu or jfrank-at-courant-dot-com, and politely let them know the questions the voters of Connecticut really want answered on this one-year anniversary of the primary.

If you could ask this question in the next Q-Poll, how would you phrase it?

Update: Chris Bowers piles on:

Send an email, make a call, or do both, whichever you prefer.  Be polite, and don't demand any specific wording of the question. Just tell them that you think, given Joe Lieberman's continued support for the Iraq war, it would be worthwhile to see if any of his supporters in 2006 now regret how they voted. I know it is already in the evening, but perhaps we can fill up their inboxes, thus giving them something to think about in the morning. And if we don't hear back, well, then we can keep the calls and emails going.

04 and his loss are the only political election losses that I took personally.

Only those with a conscience (0.00 / 0)
LOL...but IMO only those Liebervoters with a conscience would regret their vote.  Unfortunately, I suspect the majority of them are absent that human component; otherwise they would not have cast that/those vote(s).

BTW...anyone every hear from the FEC about the Lieberslush?  yeah, right.

People don't like to admit they made a mistake.. (4.00 / 1)
especially the lunatic fringe.

The question would have to be worded very carefully in order to get the truth.

The lunatic fringe is not our concern (4.00 / 1)
There were plenty of democrats and even some sensible republicans who voted for this walking disaster, never imagining Lieberman was this bad. Those are the people we want to measure.

I'm more interested in finding out (0.00 / 0)
why Lamont lost momentum.. why people chose NOT to vote for him. Isnt' that far more productive?

Not so difficult (0.00 / 0)
The Lamont team didn't shift the independent vote at all. Lieberman kept about a third of the democrats and was the de facto republican in the race, capturing over 70% of that vote.

The truth is winning the general was near impossible under those conditions. Winning the primary was a small miracle in itself. And more of us should be appreciative of that fact rather than dwell on "what might have been."

I would have been happier with the 'what might have been' (0.00 / 0)
the Dems needed and still need that extra seat.

droopy joe (0.00 / 0)
the sad reality is that those asses who voted for Joe 1) have no idea what venal things he has done because they don't pay attention (which is why they voted for droopy joe in the first place) 2) would not admit their mistake even if they realized it.

Lieberman Dem Approval 2005-2006 (4.00 / 1)
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Through most of 2005 Lieberman was at a steady 70% approval rate (same with republican voters, and nearly as high among independents). Since then he's dropped like a stone among democrats, dropped somewhat with independents (about 50% approval, 42% disapproval) but maintained his high ratings among republicans.

My sense is he's well down into the 20's in Connecticut among democrats, but a large shift down among independents, with a smaller shift among republicans. The true numbers would be very interesting indeed.

That graph (0.00 / 0)
is the story of the election... it's a shame SUSA stopped polling for CT-SEN approval post-election.

Survey... (0.00 / 0)
I had one friend - a Democrat - tell me she voted for Lieberman and now regrets it. I don't know if she's the exception or the rule, but I'd be curious to know too.

I'd word the survey questions very simply:
1. Do you approve or disapprove of the way Joe Lieberman has handled his job in the Senate since being re-elected?
  A. Approve
  B. Disapprove

2. Given the chance to go back and change your vote in the 2006 election, who would you vote for?
  A. Ned Lamont
  B. Joe Lieberman
  C. Alan Schlesinger

Then I'd throw this one in, just for fun:
Do you consider Joe Lieberman:
  A. The worst Senator in CT history
  B. A dangerous, power-hungry egomaniacal nutjob
  C. A lying, scheming tool of the Bush Administration
  D. All of the above

phrasing (0.00 / 0)
I would simply ask: "If last year's the election between Lamont and Liberman were being held today, for whom would you vote?"

That way no one is forced to overtly admit they made a mistake.

Then the next question can be: "Whom did you vote for in the '06 election?"

And that would track who wishes they could change from Lieberman to Lamont.

Should the other candidates be included? (0.00 / 0)
Or at least Schlesinger?  If enough Republicans had stuck with their party we may have had a different result.

My questions...okay, I know they are too lengthy, but here they are:

Just before election day, Joe Lieberman told the voters that, "No one wants to end the war in Iraq more than I do" and said we could probably bring troops home in 2007.  Would you have voted for him if you knew he was going to vote to send more troops to Iraq?

Would you have voted for him if you knew he was going to call for military strikes against Iran?

and in six months joe will say... (4.00 / 1)
Here is a timeline of Friedman units.  I forgot  how many times Joe kept telling us things were getting better.
