Rally against Discrimination at New Britain Wal-Mart

by: Joe Dinkin

Tue Jul 31, 2007 at 20:50:23 PM EDT

(This kind of coverage of important local events is terrific! - promoted by Jon Kantrowitz)

Edwin Lopez (at left), a New Britain resident and member of Connecticut Working Families, was recently fired from his job at the New Britain Wal-Mart, after seven years of employment, for offenses he claims were largely fabricated. Edwin says the firings had more to do with race.

There are fairly large number of practices at Wal-Mart that we object to. But out and out racism against the people working there is around as bad as it gets. So, we held a rally to highlight the pattern, to call on the store to create an official 'no harassment' policy to allow Spanish speaking Wal-Mart workers to communicate in Spanish with Spanish speaking customers without fear of retribution or punishment, and to call on Attorney General Richard Blumenthal to open an investigation into discriminatory practices.

The most excited part: the Attorney General came to the event and agreed to investigate.

The event got covered in the New Britain Herald (read the story) and the Courant (read the story), and also on NBC 30 news.

Our rally is also the topic of the New Britain Herald's online readers poll.  Go to the front page at www.newbritainherald.com and in the left column, you can vote whether you believe that employee complaints about racial discrimination at Wal-Mart are valid on the left hand side.

The rally was attended by several dozen members of the New Britain community, including a bunch of very energetic sign holding kids, as well as local elected officials. Read on to see pictures. Here's a taste:

Energetic sign-holding kids from the community. The signs read "You Can Roll Back Your Prices but Not Our Rights":

The Working Families Banner:

New Britain's own Phil Sherwood, candidate for City Council, long time activist, and one-time Wal-Mart employee, came to support the rally:

New Britain's Rep. Tim O'Brien also came in support of the rally. Senator Don DeFronzo appologized for not being able to make it, but sent his best wishes.

The Attorney General articulated the point of the rally very clearly: "Racism has no place anywhere."

And when Eddy told his story, the media listened:

We're hopeful, at the end of the rally, that we can work towards change for Wal-Mart's workers and the Spanish speaking community. And of course, racism is but one element on an incredibly long laundry list of things we'd like to change about Wal-Mart, but as it is said, "Change Wal-Mart and you change the world."

I don't shop at Wal-Mart (0.00 / 0)
I wish I could say "ever", but I did break down and shop at Wal-Mart in September of 2005.  I was desperate: the classroom in which I was teaching was near 100 degrees, and we had no fans (much less air conditioning).  It was the end of summer and I searched everywhere for fans, from small hardware stores to appliance stores to other chains that weren't Wal-Mart.  Everywhere I went, finding everyone out of stock of fans, people said, "Have you tried Wal-Mart?"

Finally, feeling sick to my stomach, I went to Wal-Mart in Norwalk.  It was after 9:00 and packed with people, including a lot of young kids.  That alone depressed me, as school had already started and lots of these were young kids who should be in bed.  I found one fan left on the shelves, just one.  I bought it.

The next day, halfway through the day, it broke.

I won't shop there again.  Ever.
