Farrell nomination moving forward

by: Matthew Gertz

Wed Jul 18, 2007 at 21:29:53 PM EDT

Diane Farrell's nomination to the board of the Export-Import Bank of the United States is proceeding nicely. The Ex-Im Bank, for those who aren't familiar with it, provides loan guarantees and other assistance to help U.S. companies engage in foreign trade. As mattw noted at the time, her nomination was announced in late May. Last Wednesday, she had her hearing before the Senate Banking Committee.

Video is available on the committee website here, but it was a pretty quiet hearing. I actually was expecting a little push back given that Diane spent the last four years running vigorous congressional campaigns in which she consistently attacked President Bush, but during the hearing, the lone Republican present (Wayne Allard) only asked her a softball about how she felt about the recent appointment of an inspector general for the  Bank (she's for it, naturally).

The Connecticut Post's Peter Urban reported on the hearing:

Former Westport First Selectwoman Diane Farrell appears headed for easy Senate confirmation as a member of the Export-Import Bank's board of directors.

At her confirmation hearing Wednesday, Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd, D-Conn., warmly greeted Farrell, whom he counts among his friends.

"I have known Diane for many years and I am impressed obviously with her intelligence and tenacity," he said.

[...]

Dodd said that he hoped to move Farrell's confirmation through the Senate before the August recess.

The full committee markup on Diane's nomination is scheduled for July 19.

I'm very proud of Diane. I still spend too much time wishing she was in Congress right now, but if she can't make us proud there, it's good to know that she has found another way to serve the public and the district.

Highlights of Diane's opening statement on the flip.

As always, my comments are my own, without the knowledge or approval of Diane Farrell, Adam Wood, Nancy DiNardo, Mike Richter, Joe Lieberman, or anyone else you care to name.

Matthew Gertz :: Farrell nomination moving forward
Diane began by thanking Sens. Reid and Dodd for her support, as well as her tireless husband Win:

Mr. Chairman, Mr. Shelby, members of the Committee and individuals here to witness
the hearing this morning, it is great honor to appear before you as a nominee to the Board
of the Export Import Bank of the United States. I am grateful to President Bush for this
nomination, to Senator Harry Reid for his support and most especially to my great friend
Chairman Dodd for convening this hearing. He has represented our state and led the
nation on so many issues vital to our citizenry. It is equally an honor to have my friend
Jackie Clegg Dodd here in attendance. As former Vice Chair of the Export Import Bank,
her knowledge of international trade and export finance has been an invaluable resource.

As important as all are who are in this room, the most important person in my life, my
husband of 29 years Win Farrell is here. A wonderful father to our two daughters Hilary
and Margaret, Win has always allowed me to pursue my interests where ever they have
taken us - both literally and figuratively. Words do not exist in any language adequate
enough to say “thank you”.

Diane noted the experience that makes he an able candidate to the office:

In eight years in office, I
worked closely in a supportive role with commercial interests of all sizes. Fairfield
County Connecticut is home to numerous Fortune 500 companies as well as small
business. The Business Council of Fairfield County and the Chambers of Commerce in
the cities and towns in our area are proactive organizations that eagerly reached out to
area elected officials as a means to multi dimensionally strengthen the region.
Cooperative efforts including transportation, housing, homeland security and
infrastructure improvement are some of the more prominent initiatives that I was
involved in during my tenure in office. Should I be confirmed to the Board of Directors at
the Ex-Im Bank, I would intend to carry forward the public private partnership
philosophy as part of the Ex-Im Bank’s leadership.

She also noted that she intends to use her position to retain U.S. jobs here at home:

What perhaps attracts me most to the Ex-Im Bank is its mission to promote U.S.
commercial interests in the global marketplace with the priority of retaining jobs here at
home. The issue of losing jobs overseas is ever present in the minds of our country’s
citizens and leadership. To be able to actively help companies compete, to retain jobs and
promote new industries will be a most rewarding and satisfying endeavor.

How (0.00 / 0)
... do they markup a nomination? No snark, I've never heard of that as part of the process.
