Great Review of Sicko by Rep. Tim O'Brien (8 down, 179 to go!)

by: Joe Dinkin

Wed Jul 18, 2007 at 17:09:00 PM EDT

(Making progress on getting CT legislators to see Sicko -- have you emailed your legislators yet? If you've seen Sicko, share your thoughts in the comments! - promoted by Maura)

Have you seen Sicko yet? Well, so far 8 legislators have. And 179 haven't.

O'Brien, a great State Rep. and a blogger to boot, (see his blog) was the most recent legislator to send in a review.

He really takes the insurance industry in this state to task.

Of course, these denials of health care and inefficiencies are not, as the insurance industry would have us believe, to keep insurance jobs in our state. Despite the reputable and thorough economic analysis showing that reforming our health care coverage system would save the people and businesses of our state hundreds of millions of dollars, increase the number of jobs in Connecticut and free up a billion dollars for Connecticut families, insurance companies had the audacity this past year to make their employees feel like their jobs would be at risk if state legislators did the right thing for the people of the state on health care. This audacity was despite the fact that these companies have never hesitated to layoff Connecticut workers in order to increase their own profits.

You can read the whole review here. (And then make sure to email your State Rep. and Senator and ask why they haven't seen it yet, and then send the site along to your friends to do the same.)

And here's the list of legislators who've seen the movie so far:

Rep. David McCluskey - 20th
Rep. John Geragosian - 25th
Rep. Joan Lewis - 8th
Rep. Denise Merrill - 54th
Rep. Tim O'Brien - 24th
Rep. Melissa Olson - 46th
Rep. Elizabeth Ritter - 38th
Rep. Elissa Wright - 41st

If you haven't already, please add your voice to the Working Families petition to ask all CT legislators to see Sicko before the next legislative session.

I volunteered for an hour last weekend with the Universal Health Care Foundation's tabling efforts in Norwalk after the 7:00 show of the movie, and then saw the 9:00 show.  It was incredibly powerful.  And people leaving the film were really receptive to the idea that we here in Connecticut can actually do something about universal health care without waiting for the federal government to act.

I do think that what was missing from the movie -- as opposed to the ending of An Inconvenient Truth -- was the "call to action", the idea that there is something tangible that everyone can do at the end of the movie to change things.  I'm glad that the Working Families Party and Universal Health Care Foundation are organizing efforts to greet people who leave the movie and share information about what we can do in Connecticut to improve the system.

You have my email address, so please feel free to email me -- you don't have to leave comments for just me here at MLN.  I appreciate the sentiment, though, and thanks.

I imagined he'd be in the top 10.  :-)

Loved the WFP "date night" email today, BTW.  You guys rock.

Date Night With Your Legislators (0.00 / 0)
In case folks here aren't yet on the CT Working Families email list (and please do join -- it's not a high-traffic list and it's always very well-written, timely content) here's the email that I referred to above:

What are you doing Friday (tomorrow!) Evening?

We've been asking State Senators and Representative in Connecticut to see Michael Moore's new film Sicko.

So we decided the best way to get them to see the movie was to ask the legislature out on a date. Join us and State Legislators at the movies to see Sicko Friday evening!

Sicko is a clarion call for healthcare reform. And healthcare is not going to reform itself. Legislators need to understand how healthcare costs are spiraling out of control for working people, and how more and more of us are falling through the cracks. Meanwhile, insurance companies can rake in a tidy profit. (Aetna is announcing their 2nd quarter profits next week. Remember when they announced their 1st quarter profits in April?)

So, we've been urging them to see Sicko to keep the issue fresh in everyone's mind during the summer, so we don't have to start from square one in 2008.

Join us, (and some legislators) Friday July 20th, at 4:15 at the Bowtie Cinema in Hartford. Q&A to follow.

We've been emailing our legislators. We've started a petition. But thus far, only 8 that we know of have gone to the movie. We're not asking a lot. We're not demanding they pledge their vote, or sign a statement. We just want them to see a movie during summer break -- is that so much to ask?

So we've adopted a new technique: we're inviting our legislators out for a date. So far, Senators Prague and LeBeau, and Rep. Tercyak have all told us they'd go.

So come see the flick. Click here to RSVP. Or send your legislators an invitation if they're not already coming.

It's no summer blockbuster like Spiderman 3, or Ocean's 13, but then again, it beat both at the box office last week. So take a few hours and come on a date with you legislators to tell them that healthcare reform matters to you.

That's all for now. Pay your dues, read the papers -- and organize.

Sincerely,

Jon Green
Executive Director
Connecticut Working Families

I can't join folks for "date night" as I've already got a date tomorrow night with 2500 unstuffed envelopes, Jim Himes, and a great group of Himes for Congress volunteers (if you're in the 4th CD, sign up here and click the "Clerical" checkbox if you're interested in joining us for similar events!)

But this is a fantastic idea.  Kudos to Connecticut Working Families for their great creativity!!!
