It's Official: Tom Allen is running for Senate against Susan Collins

by: Scarce

Tue May 08, 2007 at 14:57:14 PM EDT

John Aravosis reports:

Congressman Tom Allen just filed the paperwork today to run for the U.S. Senate seat held by Susan Collins. He's going to do an official announcement tour around Maine later this month. Tom will be Maine's next Senator.

The Allen campaign just launched its website today too.

In 1996, when Susan Collins first ran for Senate, she promised the people of Maine that she'd only serve two times. In typical GOP fashion, she lied. She's going to run for a third term. But, she won't get it.

This is going to be one of the premiere races in 2008. Susan Collins has staunchly stood by George Bush every day, especially on his war in Iraq, for which she voted in 2002. Last year, she campaigned for Rick Santorum. She cast the deciding vote to bring Trent Lott back in to GOP Senate leadership. And, all anyone needs to know about the pro-Iraq war record of Susan Collins is that pro-Iraq war Joe Lieberman supports her. She's already endorsed pro-Iraq war John McCain for President. That's the company she keeps.

Tom can -- and will win. Maine is a blue state. Tom has represented the first Congressional District, which includes Greater Portland, since 1996. He's a proven vote getter. In the 2006 election, Tom got 60% of the vote without running one t.v. ad meanwhile, the Democratic Governor was re-elected with only 38% of the vote in a four-way race. Approximately 72% of the media market in Maine comes out of the Portland-Auburn stations, which comprise the southern part of the state. A good chunk of voters in the Second District, including the very blue city of Waterville (hometown of the venerated George J. Mitchell) was in Tom's District until the last re-districting (in 2002). Collins best election was in 2002 -- the best GOP year ever, and she got just 58%.

7 Reasons Why Tom Allen Will Defeat Susan Collins (0.00 / 0)
From a diary at DailyKos

http://www.dailykos....

1. Susan Collins promised the voters of Maine she would only serve two terms.  Collins lied to the voters of Maine.

2. Susan Collins has a Presidential Support Score of about 80%.  Bush has an approval in Maine of around 33%.  Bush will drag Collins down.

3. A majority of voters want to bring the troops home.  Not Susan Collins.  Iraq will drag Collins down.

4. The conditions that led to the Walter Reed scandal occurred while Susan Collins was Chair of the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.  Collins provided no oversight or leadership in defense of our veterans' health.

5. Susan Collins claims to be pro-choice, but she supported the nominations of both John Roberts and Sam Alito to the Supreme Court, which has since resulted in an erosion of a woman's right to choose.

6. 2008 should be another Democratic-leaning year, with more voters trusting the Democratic Congress over Bush on most issues and polls indicating that voters currently lean toward a generic Democrat over a generic Republican. urther, Maine goes blue in Presidential years, which should also help Allen over Collins.

7. The DSCC will be able to support Tom Allen more significantly than the NRSC will be able to support Susan Collins.

And I will add my own No.8. Susan Collins' best friend.

(I don't know why I love this picture of Joe)

This rings a bell! (4.00 / 1)
1. Susan Collins promised the voters of Maine she would only serve two terms.  Collins lied to the voters of Maine.

Your pink-tutued senator pretty much said the same thing. But, I think it was 3 terms for him (so he said). I guess lying liars have to stick together in that most exclusive club in the world.

The arc of history is long, but it bends toward justice. --Martin Luther King, Jr.

I remember (0.00 / 0)
her promise when she was running the first time as it was the "in" pledge from Repukes but look how many have backed out of it now.
As for the pink tutued senator, it would not be polite to say what he appears to need in that pose.

You forgot one key item (4.00 / 1)
K A T R I N A.

According to Collins, and Lieberman, no one is to be held responsible. Ever.

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

She must be scared ****less. Or, of course like Shays, it means nothing.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, told CNN Tuesday she will consider calling for troops to be withdrawn from Iraq if sufficient progress has not been made in the country by September -- the next time the top U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, returns to Capitol Hill to update Congress.

This is the first time Collins, a moderate who is bracing for a tough re-election fight next year, has suggested she might call for a troop withdrawal in the coming months.

"I do believe there comes a point in September where if it's evident that the new strategy is not successful and will not succeed we do have to change course and that means looking for all options, including a plan for withdrawing troops," Collins said.

You've done it again, Scarce. Caught me off guard and made me laugh out loud. It was not what I was expecting.

Why is Sept so important? (0.00 / 0)
As has been discussed on the big blogs, the "timeline" of Sept is important so that all the GOP legislators have a chance to run away from their fiasco and their leader before the election.

As it was once nicely put by Ari Fleischer, "You don't release a new product in August."

The new "against the war, bring our troops home" GOP product release date is Sept. Get ready for the big media spin to create the NEW IMPROVED GOP from the former Bush supporters and enablers.

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

Exactly (0.00 / 0)
Trent Lott among others has been floating around Sept as well. The thinking there is that Bush's influence will then be down to 0 and the new presidential race takes over, as if it hasn't already. One expects these sycophantic enablers like Collins and Shays and many, many others to completely disavow themselves of the Bush legacy. Most will probably claim they've never heard of the man. At least that's what one would expect in a rational world. For republican toadies it's anyone's guess what they'll really do though.

Vote Vets airing "Generals" ads against Collins (0.00 / 0)

Our ads are airing in states and districts of those Members of Congress who are very close to breaking with the President on Iraq, and joining the troops and American people. They are: Senators Susan Collins, John Sununu, John Warner, and Norm Coleman, and Representatives Mary Bono, Phil English, Randy Kuhl, Jim Walsh,  Heather Wilson, Jo Ann Emerson, Tim Johnson, Mike Rogers, Fred Upton, and Mike Castle. Mentioning them by name at the end, the local spots will call on them to "Protect America, Not George Bush."

Susan Collins will be mentioned by name when it airs in Maine.

It's be nice if Chris Shays could get the same treatment.

Allen is a helluva candidate (0.00 / 0)
Tom Allen has not just represented Maine's first district since 1996 - he has dominated it electorally.

Beginning with his 10-point win in 1996, Allen has won with double-digit margins every year since. Last Nov. he won with 20 percent of the vote.

He's going to give Collins the fight of her life.
