A few updates on Julie Amero case

by: Maura

Mon Feb 19, 2007 at 22:59:01 PM EST

Steve Bass at PC World has a column today suggesting ways that readers can take action in response to the miscarriage of justice in the Julie Amero case, including contributing to the Julie Amero Defense Fund.

Last week, Bass received a fascinating email from a man who served on the 6-person jury that convicted Julie Amero.  His logic in finding her  guilty of four felony counts is beyond disturbing, as it essentially comes down to this juror's opinion that Amero was guilty because someone with her lack of computer training shouldn't be serving as a classroom teacher.

Finally, this podcast called The Malware Report discusses the implications of the Amero case for all Connecticut teachers, including this alarming conclusion from Nancy Willard of the Center for Safe and Responsible Internet Use:

In Connecticut, there is now a precedent: if the school district's technical system is not absolutely, totally secure and if there is ever a situation where a student accidentally views pornography or spyware is accidentally downloaded which delivers pop-up porn sites, then whatever teacher is supposed to be supervising the students is at high risk of arrest and conviction."

"Every teacher in the state is now in a position where they are totally dependent on the expertise of the technology director to ensure they are not subjected to such arrest and conviction. If their technology director fails at any time, the teacher is the one who will get the 'go to jail' card.

Finally, in case you missed it, I spoke with Julie and her husband Wes recently and learned much more about the tragic toll this case has taken in their lives.

Where is the teacher's union on this issue? (0.00 / 0)
Have they made any statement about this?  Perhaps they might want to demand that all schools remove all computers from the classrooms if they have an internet connection, to prevent accidental exposure to online porn.  This is such a ridiculous situation...and that juror needs a swift kick in his ass!

the position of being a substitute teacher (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for the update, Maura.  Something I've wondered about is what it's like to be a substitute teacher inside of the larger system of fulltime, unionized teachers.  In your experience, how does a sub see their role -- as a helper who learns the ropes and takes cues about the school's culture and expectations from the "old hands," the fulltime teachers or staff?

I would think that it's not the same to be a sub as it is to be a fulltime teacher.  You're a professional visitor of sorts.

The email from the prosecuting expert is scary too. (0.00 / 0)

Once the sentencing phase for this case is done I can answer all your questions. I have all the information you seek. My opinion is not important but I am fleshing out a theory concerning site blocking software which was in place and how to circumvent it. I can provide you w/ the source code showing all the .htm and javascripting for each web page, images from those pages, date/time of creation, MD5 hashes, etc. I will contact you after sentencing. Thank you,

That this expert is 'fleshing out a theory' after the trial is over is probably good news, since it may show us the outer limits of his toolkit and training.

MD5 hashes usually only mean something when comparing files.  They come in handy when you want to know if a given file has been changed vs the original.  So either he has a blockbuster discovery, or a laundry list of nothing.

Something is REALLY REALLY WRONG in Norwhich (0.00 / 0)
While I don't live in Norwich I can't understand why there isn't a major influx of parents wanting their kids to grow up in this lovely little Connecticut town?

Who wouldn't want their children to attend a school system with a rich educational and cultural life where the local police play a part as described by its principle:

"Principal Fain reported to the Norwich Bulletin that at the Kelly Middle School [800 students] there were 27 police visits and 14 ARRESTS FOR VIOLENT ACTIVITY."  Norwich Bulletin May 2, 2004

After all that's only 2 out of 100 students who were arrested for Violent activity so you do have a 96% chance that your own child will come home from school safely. if not in the hospital or in jail. I bet parents in Beirut are jealous.

Also most parents would feel better off knowing that their child's moral growth is being watched over by that beacon of morality Detective Mark Lounsbury. Known in many circles a "meter maid with a gun" this is an officer knows through example how to shape the morals and values of a minor.

After all as a role model he is without peer. Just look at his distinguished record of what comprises his own moral compass as reported in the Norwich paper.

"A Norwich police detective has admitted to drinking beer while driving a MINOR around the city on a sting targeting alcohol sales to underage drinkers.
Detective Mark Lounsbury, who drove the police van used in the undercover sting operation on November 30th made the admission last week to Deputy Chief Warren Mocek, the newspaper reported."

Nothing is better for a youngster than to see first hand how drinking and driving is always a good thing. After all if most of us were stopped with an open can of beer while operating a motor vehicle we would want our kids to think that the only thing that would happen would be they wouldn't be able to come to work for a few weeks.

The pesky DUI charge, the 30 day suspended license, the astronomical insurance rates or loosing your job is something that they need not worry about. All you have to do is take a test..get a gun and a badge..and have the mindset that "I walk among you but I'm not one of you".. now this is a true role model for our future generations.

Norwich now that's the town where every parent would want to raise their child..if their kids name is Damien and they have three 6's on their scalp.

Lounsbury came off as a fraud and a hack when he wrote to defend his bogus testimony, but this is really beyond the pale. Somebody take away that creep's badge.
