Ned Writes An Email

by: Matt Browner Hamlin

Tue Feb 13, 2007 at 16:04:29 PM EST

I just got this email from Ned Lamont in support of Senator Dodd's Restoring the Constitution Act.

Dear friend,

Co-Sponsor Sen. Dodd's LegislationLast October, at the height of campaign season, the Senate voted to pass the Military Commissions Act. This law allows President Bush to hold detainees indefinitely without charging them and gives the president the authority to interpret the definition of torture under the Geneva Conventions.

As I said at the time, this law is not only unconstitutional and at odds with our values as Americans, it puts our troops in jeopardy and does great damage to our nation's moral standing in the world.

Almost immediately after the passage of the bill, our senior senator from Connecticut, Chris Dodd, took the lead in working to repeal it.

This week, Sen. Dodd is introducing legislation to restore habeas corpus protections for detainees and repeal the unconstitutional provisions of the Military Commissions Act.

Will you sign on as a citizen co-sponsor?

Chris was helpful to our campaign during the general election, and he is courageously addressing a range of serious issues in the Senate, including taking the lead in forcing a real change in strategy in Iraq.

This legislation is a chance for the Senate to start asserting our true American values again by unequivocally rejecting the gravely mistaken Administration policies on detainee treatment - policies which have only made us less safe.

Please join Sen. Dodd - along with co-sponsors Sen. Menendez (D-NJ), Sen. Leahy (D-VT), and Sen. Feingold (D-WI) - and consider becoming a citizen co-sponsor of the "Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007":

And let your representatives who voted for the Military Commissions Act know that you expect more from them.

Thanks,

Ned

An email also sent by Chris Dodd, today. I think I got on his email list, because I've written him enough in the past few years.
Last September, within days of the 60th anniversary of the verdicts in the Nuremberg Trials, the Senate passed the "Military Commissions Act."

The new Democratic majority in Congress has an obligation to repair the damage done by the Bush Administration and the Military Commissions Act to our international reputation and domestic traditions.

That's why I am introducing the "Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007" later today -- it's a bill that would restore the writ of habeas corpus for individuals in U.S. custody, prevent the use of evidence gained through torture in court, and limit the authority of the President to interpret the meaning and application of the Geneva Convention.

My father was one of the lead prosecutors at Nuremberg, and he shaped my early beliefs about the importance of justice and rule of law.

Now, as then, our country should refuse to tailor its principles to the conflict of the moment, because if we do, we will be walking in the footsteps of the enemies we despise.

Can I count on you to become a citizen co-sponsor of this bill, right now?

This nation stands for the rule of law. When we abandon it, we lose much more than we could ever gain.[emphasis added]

We've watched the current administration repeatedly retreat from those standards, thus making the world a more dangerous place.

The Military Commissions Act was a major step back for our country, and I was stunned when it passed the Republican-led Congress and was signed by President Bush.

With your support, we can reverse this course and achieve a different result.

Please take a moment to visit the link below; learn more about the "Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007"; become a citizen co-sponsor; and ask your personal networks to do the same.

Got Ned's email, and also Russ's from the progressive patriots. Sounds like a full court press for those who are concerned.

Disclosure: I have no idea whom I'm supporting among the Democrats in the primaries ;-)

The arc of history is long, but it bends toward justice. --Martin Luther King, Jr.
