Dodd, Menendez Introducing Bill to Restore Habeas Corpus, Torture Protections

by: Matt Browner Hamlin

Mon Feb 12, 2007 at 18:41:30 PM EST

Via Blue Jersey we learn that Senators Chris Dodd and Robert Menendez are going to introduce The Effective Terrorists Prosecution Act, a bill that will gut the Military Commissions Act of 2006 which Congress passed this past October. The MCA gave the president the authority to declare anyone, even American citizens, enemy combatants, detain them, torture them, and deny them habeas corpus.

WASHINGTON - TOMORROW, Tuesday, February 12, 2007, U.S. Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) will hold a press conference to discuss the Effective Terrorists Prosecution Act which will restore habeus corpus rights, ban torture and uphold the Geneva Conventions. The senators, both members of the Foreign Relations Committee, will discuss the need for these protections in the fight against terrorism.

Menendez voted for the MCA. He is doing the right thing by working with Dodd to get it reversed now; I'd hope that Menendez is sufficiently appreciative of Senator Dodd for letting him jump onto this bill, which Dodd originally proposed in November 2006. That sounds petty, but I remember there being a great deal of shock and outrage on the blogs when Menendez joined Lieberman and ten other Democrats to vote in favor of the MCA.

Also, I'm a bit disappointed that this news broke on Blue Jersey and not a Connecticut blog.

Also, I'm a bit disappointed that this news broke on Blue Jersey and not a Connecticut blog.

If only Senator Dodd had some kind of website where his staff could quickly announce initiatives like this before he proposes them publicly ...

But don't know if this particular initiative was there before his announcement.

teasing (0.00 / 0)
I tease (with love of course) the DoddBlog, which delivers news at a very slow pace. Last post was 2/9 - though it's good that they're updating the non-blog portion of the site (?), though it would appear it's not possible to get their updates via RSS / newsreader software.

RSS on dodd.senate.gov (0.00 / 0)
FYI, the RSS feeds for Sen Dodd's website are linked in the footer at the bottom of the page. They seem to work for me. And in the interest of full disclosure, I work for Sen Dodd, so if they aren't working for you, reply to this and let me know. I'll see if we can get them fixed for you...

Thanks for stopping by GCG and welcome (0.00 / 0)
I'll leave it to mattw to post you back about whether the RSS feed is working  - meanwhile, please tell Senator Dodd that I like his video and invitation to be in partnership to get things done.  Many here recognize that this is an important bill -- and we are also very focused here on decisive action to end the war, not tentative nonbinding actions.

Please let  us know how to be in partnership on bringing that about, and I don't think you'll be hurting for support in that regard from the MLN community.

Cheers, mate (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for the tip -- us MLNers tend to focus on the campaign side of things, but the longer-established Senate office is on it here. Fewer levels of hierarchy, perhaps?
