My Left Nutmeg

ACS / C.S. Lewis

I linked to this article just a couple posts down, but I wanted to highlight its conclusion:
Conscience is a tricky business. Some interpret its personal beacon as the guide to universal truth and undoubtedly many of the health care providers who refuse to treat or refer or inform their patients do so in the sincere belief that it is in the patients' own interests, regardless of how those patients might view the matter themselves. But the assumption that one's own conscience is the conscience of the world is fraught with dangers.

As C.S. Lewis wrote, "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

Of the Chronicles of Narnia fame (0.00 / 0)
Interesting person to choose a quote from. C.S. Lewis was an atheist who converted to Christianity because of his close friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien (Lord of the Rings), who was a devout Roman Catholic. Lewis was also considered one of the fore-most Christian apologist of his time.

The arc of history is long, but it bends toward justice. --Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Scariest Movie I ever Saw (0.00 / 0)
Mr. Lewis was a fabulous writer. His book "At The Mountains Of Madness" was made into a film- "the Thing" starring Kurt Russell, that's not to be missed.

"If those in charge of our society...can dominate our ideas, they will be secure in their power. They will not need soldiers patrolling the streets. We will control ourselves." ~~Howard Zinn

Apologist turns to children's fables (0.00 / 0)
C.S. Lewis sought to be a Christian apologist.  He wrote books as an apologist that have attracted a considerable following among U. S. evangelicals, but he had little impact on European Christianity.

Lewis had no specific theological training.  The end of his career as an apologist came when he debated in the Oxford Union against an opponent who I believe was a female Catholic theologian.  Lewis was trounced at that public event.  He stopped his apologetic efforts and turned instead to writing children's stories such as The Chronicles of Narnia, chief of which has been The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
