CNN Clip of Edwards' blogger controversy

by: Scarce

Wed Feb 07, 2007 at 21:13:15 PM EST

I wonder, is linking

John Edwards-->Ned Lamont-->out of control bloggers

..the correct message to take from this, or am I just too sensitive?

[Full Disclosure: I dislike CNN more than I do Fox.]

Is it just me? (4.00 / 1)
Because I don't see anything but facts, snark, and the reality in the words that they are taking offense to.

Fuck'em if they don't have a built-in snarkometer... Double FUCK'EM if they don't like the facts.

For your reading pleasure (4.00 / 2)
Culture Kitchen has a great roundup of blog coverage from today.

Two of the best posts I've read on this controversy (4.00 / 3)
Ampersand at Alas, A Blog has written two of the best posts on this entire controversy that I've read tonight:

What's at Stake Here

and A brilliant takedown of each and everyone one of the examples of Melissa's and Amanda's writing that Donoghue criticizes.

Another great insight (4.00 / 4)
Commenter Crablaw at MyDD puts the Edwards blogger controversy into perspective (bold mine):

This is not a grass-roots movement of angry Catholics offended at rude metaphors and malicious speculation about the source of the Church's birth control teaching.

No, this is a right-wing mau-mau strategic hit against free-wheeling, irreverent and often vulgar progressive blogging culture and progressive blogging writ large, a hit which, sadly, is up to Team Edwards to deflect.

This is not a hit against Marcotte.  This is a hit against Bowers, Stoller, Kos, Lindsay Beyerstein, Feministe, Feministing, Armstrong, Greenwald, Echidne, even the famously non-vulgar Josh Marshall, the front-pagers at Kos.  This punch is aimed at Atrios, at Blue Jersey, at Team Lamont. It's aimed square into Jane Hamsher's eyes, Christy Smith's face.

THIS is why you should care even if you are happy for Edwards to drown in his own drool.

Damn straight.

More than that (4.00 / 2)
This is about even more than that.

Over the past week we've seen one thing from the republican and conservative establishment:

They are afraid of Edwards.

Their pundits have been all over the talking-heads shows chortling at the recently-reported size of Edwards' house, all the while systematically leaving him out of discussions regarding democratic front-runners. Why all the effort to dismiss the credibility of his populist message if it doesn't even belong in the discussion?

At the congressional dinner, republican pundits and pols began conceding that hillary will, in all liklihood, be the next president. Do you really believe they would cede the election a year out from the first primary, or--knowing the GOP as we do--do you think this might be a more nefarious gambit, hoping to add to hillary's aura of inevitability in an effort to deny a more formidable opponenet the democratic nomination?

Now the right-wing theocratic attack dogs are going after what? Edwards' netroots strategy directly. They see the candidate they fear utilizing the strategy they fear, and they are trying to swift boat it.

The game is on, guys. Time to jump in.

Right On! (0.00 / 0)
After watching this game played repeatedly over the last 6 years, I have a visceral reaction when the corporate media, right wing punditry and DLC corporatists annoint or smear/dismiss any candidate. For I know there are ulterior motives behind the narrative, and said narrative is intended to manipulate rather than inform.

Would John Kerry ever have been our candidate in 2004 had not the right wingers with help from the corporate media relentlessly smeared Dean with the "scream" among other things, while at the same time drumming into our heads how much more electable John Kerry would be.

I have no doubt that "they" want us to pick Hillary or Obama because those 2 candidates are seen as the easiest to force upon the Democratic masses and the easiest to beat by Republicans in 2008. But they are also seen as a win-win, because should either of those candidates score enough to overcome the rigged machines, they will do the bidding of their corporate paymasters nearly as well as a Republican would.

The fact that they are expending so much energy attacking Edwards confirms what the netroots' straw polls have been showing for quite a while. He is the strongest of all the current Democratic candidates, and I bet that scares the hell out of the fascists.

I agree with all the people who have suggested that Edwards' campaign will be doomed if he caves in and sends those 2 bloggers packing. Not only will he demonstrate to the right that he can be controlled and manipulated by them, but he will show the grassroots that he doesn't have the courage to stare down the evil that has embraced this nation. After learning of his recent hawkish kow-towing to AIPAC, I am not filled with confidence.

We need Al Gore!
