Real Journalists

by: Aldon Hynes

Sun Feb 04, 2007 at 11:47:03 AM EST

Below is my letter sent to the Connecticut Post in response to Ken Dixon's opinion piece, Plenty of fingers can be pointed in Krayeske issue

I read, with amusement, Ken Dixon's opinion about the Ken Krayeske case, "Plenty of fingers can be pointed in Krayeske issue", Feb. 4, 2007.  He states, "First, beware of people who call themselves `journalists.' It's a highfalutin appellation. Real journalists are too busy working, gathering information to share with readers, to cop existential 'tudes."

Dixon is right.  We do need to beware of people calling themselves journalists.  I do hope that Dixon doesn't call himself a journalist, or if he does, that he doesn't mislead many people.  He seems to be too busy copping his own existential attitude to get beyond name calling and provide any real information about the important issues of what constitutes journalism in the twenty first century and what that means for our democracy.

What do you think?

Actually . . . (0.00 / 0)
Aldon's the real journalist.  But y'all know my bias . . .:-)

I think he puts the dick in Dixon (4.00 / 1)
I also think he feels threatened by bloggers in a way that many journalists I've met are not.  Why all the hostility toward "blahg"ers?

why all the hostility toward ANYBODY? (0.00 / 0)
Spaze, he'd never post on your page because you don't mean to hurt anyone.  He slammed on bloggers, the police, Rell's inaugural ball location, Ken Krayeske and all in such a short space.  It's what he does for a living.  He sits in front of a computer and hurls speech.

Putting the Dick in Dixon?  Perfect.  He couldn't have said it better himself.  He'd probably agree.

Maybe this column will redeem him a little.

Considering the source, it's practically a compliment.

Hyperbolic Pyro and Card Carrying Curmudgeon (0.00 / 0)
To sum it up succinctly, the guy is a piece of work.  He takes no prisoners, and I hope he's not using his column to incite other journalists to pressure Connecticut chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists not to grant Ken legal assistance funds.  That's a key reason the definition of journalist is important, but the more subtle reason it's important is that if Dixon were asked who is and who isn't, and where to draw the line (using specific examples), it might reveal more than Dixon wants to know about himself and his attitudes.  But he's not interested in personal incites, judging from his past columns (which actually were fun to read) he's more interested in lobbing personal inSULTs.  Consider the source.

I find it humorous that Dixon spells blogs "blahgs", because his style is nothing if not blogalicious. He's a great Exhibit A the next time Lieberman or some other furrowed-browed politician opines on the dangers of blogifyingand all that hyperbole. Dixon delivers in spades; it's a miracle they can print it on paper. THANKS A BUNCH BILL!!! LUV YA! MWAH! MWAH! (both cheeks)

I would say that when push comes to shove, he damns Ken in order to help him in the sense that he says, "look, guys, this case ain't worth the money you're spending, they guy's not important, and Police Chief Roberts doesn't have a clue, not to mention this Ken guy didn't do anything worth arresting him for."

Written as it is, some guy in a diner will read it.  Written as a pained paen to fairness, not so much.

Maybe by doing no one any favors, he's actually doing Ken a big favor.  I'd trade a kick in the ass for a court case any day.  FWIW.

I take it back.  He IS interested in personal "incites", he is not interested in personal "insights"... Love it.

I agree with Ken Dixon (0.00 / 0)
Ken Krayeske, pseudo- journalist, itinerant rabble-rouser and impotent political provocateur, is no poster boy for the First Amendment. And yet, too many issues around his arrest and confinement by Hartford police really stink to high heaven.

What else is this but copping a 'tude? I realize Dixon had his editorial hat on when writing it but as a pseudo-journalist himself one can only detect excessive envy at Krayeske's affect on Connecticut politics, many times more so than the likes of a Ken Dixon will ever achieve. Now, one could argue either Krayeske's role in all this was that of an inadvertant bystander but in doing so that would only prove Krayeske's innnocence. So, if this was all intentional, Krayeske is guilty of drawing attention to himself and the aforementioned issues surrounding the case then Krayeske is not so impotent afterall. So which is it, Mr Dixon?

Poor Ken Dixon (4.00 / 1)
Every time he clicks on another CT "blahg" he realizes just how easily replaceable he is.

Be scared Ken,be very scared.

I think this particular column is actually helpful (0.00 / 0)
He couldn't have established his anti-blogger credentials any more clearly, which gives him street creds with the audience that must be reached.

When a hardened cynic says the case is bullshit, water cooler wags should realize there's a good chance it really IS bullshit.

How true! (0.00 / 0)
Take a moment to scan the drivel that Dixon spews out on a regular basis.  He's poorly informed, tiresomely jaded, and adds virtually nothing to readers' understanding of the issues about which he writes.

And by the way, how is it that Connecticut Post, which writes for and about a city with an enormous minority population, maintains a stable of editors and editorial writers that is 100% white?  How is it that Conn Post can't be bothered to locate at least one African-American or Hispanic to comment on goings on in the Park City?

The old saying.. (4.00 / 1)
I remember the old saying from the women's movement, "A man of quality is not threatened by a woman of equality."

It seems like the 21st century version of this might be "A journalist of quality is not threatened by a blogger of equality."
