Aldon Hynes to cover Libby trial

by: Sue

Thu Feb 01, 2007 at 17:27:29 PM EST

Over at Aldon's blog, Orient Lodge he writes how he will be covering the much watched Libby trial.

OK, Aldon, how did you get those tickets?

Sue :: Aldon Hynes to cover Libby trial

Okay, it's official. I'll be one of the Media Blogger Association bloggers credentialed for the Libby trial. I'm currently scheduled to be there Feb 26 through Mar 1st.

A lot has been written already, both about the trial, and about the bloggers covering the trial. You can find many such links at the MBA's aggregated feed. In addition, Marcy Wheeler has done incredible work covering the trial, including great live blog posts as the trial proceeds. (Be sure to buy her book).

So, what do I have to offer as a blogger, that isn't already being offered by other bloggers and by the members of the traditional media? What is my hook, my spin, my unique perspective? Over the next couple weeks, I'll spend time getting up to speed on the trial, and on how I want to blog about it.

My initial thought is that my interest won't be the standard legal type stuff that you can get everywhere else. I'm not a lawyer. The closest I've ever gotten to a trial has probably been watching Perry Mason as a kid, or waiting in the jury selection room, hoping I wouldn't get called.

I don't want to end up at the other end of the spectrum talking about which outfit which witness wore, although that is perhaps closer to what I'm interested in. Not so much the fashion side of things. People who know me understand I know nothing about fashion. I still don't get what is wrong with wearing both pink and red or checks and stripes at the same time.

No, what I'm interested in are things like the underlying narrative. What is the impalpable essence of the courtroom atmosphere as it relates to our national story that can't easily be summed up as "Today, Judith Miller testified that..." It has to do with our common story and perhaps a little bit with group dynamics.

Aldon would like to cover this from the perspective of the collective intelligence.

Collective intelligence:

Some figures like Tom Atlee prefer to focus on collective intelligence primarily in humans and actively work to upgrade what Howard Bloom calls "the group IQ". Atlee feels that collective intelligence can be encouraged "to overcome 'groupthink' and individual cognitive bias in order to allow a collective to cooperate on one process-while achieving enhanced intellectual performance."

Aldon, you have your work cut out for you. This  jury was selected because of their lack of judgement on the Bush administration.

Congratulations! (4.00 / 1)
Should be exciting, I think you'll be in the thick of the defense's case and witnesses?  There may be some all stars called up!  Everyone wants to get Dick in a Box. (VP in witness box that is)

Or, a Camp X-Ray Box! (0.00 / 0)
Ooh, can I say that?

I will be the reader with the uncomprehending facial expression and a thin line of drool.

"I am not a Blogger...But I play one on the internet."

About the trial... (0.00 / 0)
First off, the way I got the tickets was by being a member of the Media Bloggers Association.  Robert Cox, who is head of the association, worked out the deal quite a while ago.  Initially, I thought I wouldn't ask for tickets because I have enough on my plate.  However, when plans started shaping up for me attending the Freedom to Connect conference in Washington during the trial and possibly doing some work with the next New Organizing Institute training, I figured I should contact Bob and see if there were any tickets left.

The problem is that I will be covering game week six of the hearings.  They are expected to go for four to six weeks, so if I'm unlucky, the hearings will be over before I can use my tickets.  If I'm lucky, I'll be there for the exciting climax.

One of the things I'm getting more interested in as I prepare is the whole relationship between government, old media and new media.  After all, many of the witnesses are reporters who are well known to people in the government.  Then, there are all the new media bloggers coming in and gumming up the works.

I guess an important point for everyone here to take away with them is that if you want to cover something, just ask.  You will be surprised at how easy it is to open doors.  When I say, I'm a blogger with Orient Lodge and Greater Democracy, I've managed to get credentials.  It might be a little more difficult if you say you are with MyLeftNutmeg.  It might raise an eyebrow or two.  Even Christine Stuart at CT News Junkie has been asked if it is really 'junkie'.
