Joe Confronted in New Orleans This Morning

by: tparty

Mon Jan 29, 2007 at 11:46:06 AM EST

The Senate Homeland Security Committee is holding hearings on Katrina in New Orleans this morning. Apparently, New Orleans residents aren't too thrilled with Chairman Lieberman's plans to let the Bush administration off the hook for their sickening negligence during the storm and it's aftermath:

A heckler couldn't get the best of Senator Joe Lieberman at a hearing this morning in New Orleans on the government's response to Hurricane Katrina.

Lieberman and other members of a Senate panel are in New Orleans for the hearing. Right at the start, a man began yelling "Stand up for justice!" He was finally led out of the building.

Lieberman, who'd been opening the hearing, took it in stride. He says it's hard to come back to the Crescent City more than a year after the storm "without feeling that emotion."

Justice? Accountability? Despite his protestations this morning, it's clear His Sanctimoniousness doesn't actually second that "emotion":

But now that he chairs the homeland panel-and is in a position to subpoena the records-Lieberman has decided not to pursue the material [the White House withheld on Katrina], according to Leslie Phillips, the senator's chief committee spokeswoman. "The senator now intends to focus his attention on the future security of the American people and other matters and does not expect to revisit the White House's role in Katrina," she told NEWSWEEK.

(Here was Lieberman's office's response to the Newsweek article, claiming he was "unfairly" singled out for going back on his word.)

Good...I hope he gets a LOT more of the same (0.00 / 0)
When I think of all the shit that Lieberman has pulled just in this new term already, I think by far his most outrageous is in abdicating his responsibility to get answers on the Katrina debacle.

I hope those in New Orleans are also reminded of Lieberman's role in confirming (and effusively praising) Heckuva Job Brownie.

Welcome back!!! (I know it's you because you use "shit" and "Lieberman" in the same sentence).

Glad you're feeling better.

Rather than this endless frustruation with a man who is committed body and soul - needed to lie his way to keep his senate seat and through the good graces of CT voters - remember he doesn't give a hoot about Katrina victims, or American troops going to die in a war his children wouldn't fight. He'll take his little photo ops against LNG and some other minor duties.

His mission is PNAC (the core Joe supporters know this and support him because of it).

I was going to ask what the hell PNAC stood for, but I google searched it.

Project for the New American Century a.k.a. neoconservatives' think tank

Sorry (0.00 / 0)
I'd mentioned with a link in another comment and didn't bother to do it here. Thanks for looking it up.

I think it's much more fruitful to face what Joe is rather than to think of him as just a dullard who has lost touch with reality. His reality has changed, and is - imo - delusional but it is part of an agenda which criss-crosses with Bush's agenda and that of the neoconservative manifesto. In other words, he's not simply bumbling around; he's on a mission. CT and it's senator's seat is a wonderful pretext for his mission. He's only one - but he's hob knobbing and connecting with the foreign policy elite. Remember next time you vote and wonder how and the hell did we get into this foreign mess - the American people don't vote for these machinations. It's the little chickenhawks - and there's a long history - who contribute. With the enormity of the American war machine - war is easy and these folks know it.

The little photo-ops and Katrina snafus are just window dressing - he does care a great deal about his chairmanship on this committee. It positions him to pick and choose the priorities for national interests - watch where he goes in earnest.

To lie, as Joe did, in order to get re-elected. To demonstrate, quite frankly, a desire that was absent in his previous elections - but in this last one in great abundance, I think, shows a person on a mission. He's on almost nightly/daily on shows showcasing his case and he's not even running for anything. Why?

checked my other fave sites and found this story on RawStory - raced back here to do a diary, and found my scoop already front paged.
