Connecticut for Lieberman: Baby Steps of a Mighty Institution

by: mattw

Thu Jan 18, 2007 at 23:44:56 PM EST

Tonight's CFL kickoff was quite an event - with six members (plus Stuart Korchin) in attendance, elections, debate, and a great variety of the MLN community as well just socializing and lending support. CT Bob's got a great roundup with photos here, and of course video is still to come.

I arrived with Harriet just after 6:30, and found Stuart talking with Melissa Bailey from the NH Independent (who I mistook for Jennifer Medina, sorry, Melissa!) For those interested in the continuing drama of Stuart's claim, he only attempted to register as a CFL member once, in August. As Professor Orman could tell you (and did tell the Connecticut Post), you have to return to your registrar after the party is officially recognized to register as a member. My local registrar's office confirmed that standard operating procedure if someone attempts to register with an invalid party is to register that person as not affiliated with any political party, so Korchin is on pretty shaky ground. Nonetheless, he used his position as Fantasy Chair to call a Connecticut for Lieberman party meeting on August 9th of this year at his house in Cheshire, which he announced as he was hustling out the door.

Stuart, if you really wants to go to court over this, it was probably pretty stupid to show up to a gathering of every member of the CFL party, enjoy the snacks and appetizers, and then blow out of the room just before the voting starts. But good luck, mate.

Anyway, after adopting the rules (which limit elections to an annual January organizational meeting, rules changes to a month advance notice, and official meetings to the exclusive prerogative of the Chair), Professor Orman was elected Chairman 5-1, as well as Jon Kantrowitz as Vice Chair and Sue as Secretary by acclamation. There was actually some debate over Orman's proposed CFL platform, with a few items modified, and a call to establish recall elections dumped off the list (good call, guys.)

The whole meeting, including the audience-driven attempts to follow parliamentary procedure, and Jon's awesome "alternate platform" (presented for comedic effect) was a lot of fun, actually not too different from British Parliament for you C-SPAN geeks around here. Official Party business together with a blogger-oriented party (small p) atmosphere was a pretty good mix: perhaps the CFL meetings and the proposed monthly MLN get-togethers could be joint events?

And while there are no bank accounts or specific fundraising plans drawn up just yet, there was a committee was formed to explore candidate endorsement policies, and some talk of 2007 races that might be worth CFL's involvement. So stay tuned.

Great report (0.00 / 0)
Thanks Matt for your great report on the meeting. I'm glad you apologized for mixing Melissa up with Jennifer "I heart for Joe" Medina (I wouldn't wish my worst friend on her!)

I'm still thinking about joining the CFL Party because if John Orman is serious about keeping Joe accountable, it sure would be great to be a member of the party that takes him down!

I would love to see John Orman filling that empty chair that Stephen Colbert had waiting for Joe Lieberman -- wouldn't that be a kick!

Anyway, it was fun chatting with you on the way up and back and you're right -- it's never been easier than to find great friends all over the state of CT(and country) through the blogshere community!

Just felt a jab of professional jealousy - (4.00 / 1)
not only are you able to stay up late and type coherent notes after the meeting, but they are in paragraph form - with correct punctuation and sequencing, excellent grammar and interesing, detailed descriptions. Hmmmmm.....

I'm farming this out to you! You can't hide from me!

well Sue, I agree with what you say about Matt.  I was happy to take him to the event because his energy level is inspiring, and his attention to detail is impressive, and his personality is absolutely charming, but.... Matt that "right" you told me to take at the end of your street??? it really should have been a "left"!  hahahaha ... couldn't resist!

Platform (0.00 / 0)
Great post Matt - thanks for the updates!

Did Korchin state his plan of action?

Also, there's been some discussion at this site of using CFL as a tool to push good government and fair elections legislation. Any movement on that in the platform? If CFL is really organizing, I hope it uses its energies for good and not just laughs.

Disclosure: I'm proud to work for the Service Employees International Union

Other Than The Aug 9th Meeting (0.00 / 0)
Korchin has no plans.

CFL will be used as a tool to push good government and fair elections legislation. Several resolutions to that effect were passed.

You made me laugh (0.00 / 0)
...every time you referred to Lieberman as "our glorious namesake"!  That was brilliant!

I believe the correct response would have been "hallelujah" (0.00 / 0)
Laugh?  Straight face, now, CTBob, and you shoulda rushed  right out to cut down the palm branches in the hotel lobby so you could use them in gestures of deference and honor.  You may laugh, but SOME people take the delusion of glory to heart, and don't find it amusing to be disabused of it!

ctbob: funny guy! (0.00 / 0)
ctbob, you made me laugh out loud when I read the following sentence in the New Haven indepedent article on this meeting: "CTBob, who appointed himself unofficial CFL media relations director, manned the video cam wearing a 'Kiss' button."

"If tyranny and oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy."--James Madison

Need a Shays in 08 (0.00 / 0)
Need to run a person with a name as close as possible to Chris Shays on the CFL line for the 4th CD in 08.  I'll even volunteer to write the commercials in which we "praise" our Shays candidate using snark and comedy.  (I have the commercials in my head, we can reveal when appropriate.)

Then in 2012 we find a person with the name Lieberman and run him or her.

Joe Lieberman and George Bush believe that our govt should cut and run on capturing Osama Bin Laden so that Bush and the neocons could invade Iraq. Despite no Wmds and no links to 9/11, Lieberman supports that decision.
