Chuck Hagel bitchslaps Lieberman over scare comments

by: ctblogger

Sun Jan 14, 2007 at 12:50:27 PM EST

(cross post from ConnecticutBLOG)

Finally someone calls out George Bush's favorite Democrat senator on his nonsense.

I almost threw a brick into my television this morning listening to the junior seantor as he puckered his lips and make Presidefnt Bush proud.

Good ol' Holy Joe went back to the "Dick Cheney well of scare tactics" by ONCE AGAIN linking 9/11 and Iraq (who's STILL buying that line), criticizing anyone who disagrees with the President (which would be a majority of the public), and claiming the other Iraq proposals "retreat" and "defeat" (a.k.a. cut and run).

Ironically, it took a Republican to do something that the Democrats should've done a long time ago...put the former DINOboy in his place.

And our Sr. Senator (4.00 / 3)
sat there like a goddam Boggledoll and shook his head yes the entire time Hagel did the heavy lifting instead of calling Lieberman to task for saying if you don't agree with him and Cheney you're  unpatriotic and a defeatist.

Why Dodd couldn't have pointed out that Joe Lieberman was the Sponsor of the IWR which led our country into this fiasco is beyond me.

Looks to me like the only thing BOLD Chris Dodd will do is take his nose HALF WAY out of Liebermans ass.

Completely squandered (4.00 / 3)
A forgettable performance where Dodd can't afford to waste any opportunities.

Hagel's smackdown of Lieberman, Joe as peddler for Bush...that's all this will be remembered for. Two other inconsequential drones (Kyl & Dodd).

IOW: all's quiet in Dodd City? n/t (4.00 / 1)

At least Dodd's trying to retain a modicum of dignity.. (4.00 / 2)
regarding Lieberman.  He's trying to comport himself as a gentleman.  But Lieberman keeps showing the world what a twit he is.  Twice now, in declining to endorse Dodd, he has said that "he's (Lieberman) been through a lot of politics the last two years."  In other words, it's all about him and the last campaign.  Never mind that Dodd helped manage his presidential campaign in 2004.  Never mind that Dodd went to bat for him during the primary campaign, then did all he could within the bounds of party discipline to smooth Lieberman's reentry into the Democratic caucus.

No, to Lieberman, it's all about him.  You're either on his side, or he's against you.  No subtlety, no understanding of circumstances.  His meannesss and pettiness are positively Nixonian.

Joe Lieberman (4.00 / 3)
Will endorse John McCain and thats why he wouldn't endorse Dodd.

Hell,There's still a good Chance of a McCain/Lieberman ticket In A "Unity Ticket" run.

I am not buying the dignity line (4.00 / 2)
Dodd did not have to announce his candidacy on the Imus the Bigoted Pig show, if he was trying for dignity. Dodd looked scared to death of saying anything to counter Lieberman, and this is no time to play games.

All these tv jerks are talking about Iraq like it is the only issue, when they were criticizing Lamont last month for seeming to have only one issue!

So, now >/i>they want to make Iraq the prime issue.

Too bad Dodd doesn't have the bravery or self confidence of Lamont, who ran for Senate.

-- and Dodd wants to be President? No.

"I am not a Blogger...But I play one on the internet."

Scared? you betcha (4.00 / 3)
Translated: that was exactly my assessment, Tessa (Dodd was looking scared).  And Lieberman set up Russert for that question in advance by the looks of it: "So GLAD you ASKED me that, Tim!"

Dodd is afraid of Lieberman.  He has broken the rules of his old political strategies, and is adrift as yet in anchoring himself in new ones.  He feels unable to defend himself and unsure what to do, because a bold style is still a concept to him -- he hasn't stepped into it.  And he may not, though I welcome his doing so.

At the heart of it, politicians who view "bold" as consultant advice to follow will imitate boldness and follow the PT Barnum road to incremental poll bounces.  Those who are genuinely up against the wall as regards a change their political approaches and feel they MUST speak out and cause a change (as opposed to feeling they MUST run for president and have everyone like them) will have a palpable change in tone that no one will wonder about.

Dodd may still be unsure as to whether he really wants to get on the boat, and has one foot on the dock, longing for the comfort of terra firma, while the boat is leaving.

Ship or shore?

Time will tell, but don't get caught standing up in the canoe while you're deciding, Chris Dodd.

yes, Dodd is afraid (4.00 / 2)
"Dodd is afraid of Lieberman.  He has broken the rules of his old political strategies, and is adrift as yet in anchoring himself in new ones.  He feels unable to defend himself and unsure what to do, because a bold style is still a concept to him -- he hasn't stepped into it.  And he may not, though I welcome his doing so...."

I'd also add that Lieberman is one of the most shrewd, calculating politicians in recent memory.  It's why he didn't wilt after his loss in the primary, and why he was very confident going into the general election.  He doesn't apologize because he doesn't really need to: he continues to come out on top, if not by the most ethical means.

He reminds me quite a bit of James Traficant or Tom Delay, both of whom were only toppled due to legal troubles.  And that's the only way that Lieberman will be brought down, barring his appointment to a higher political position.

It's sad that the Connecticut voters put Joe back in office for another six years.  But hindsight is 20/20, and it has been discussed ad infinitum, both here and on other liberal blogs, why the Lamont campaign didn't overcome Lieberman.

But there's one thing that can't really be disputed: like him or not (and I don't), Lieberman is a very talented politician.

Joe's mother being the exception (4.00 / 3)

Whoever is advising 'lil Joey and Johnny (4.00 / 2)
to run with and try and succeed with all of Bush's failures should be given a raise.

Nebraska blog comments about Hagel (4.00 / 3)
Quote from http://newnebraska.b... , the New Nebraska Network, which quotes from MYDD, picking up on CQ statistics:

Contrary to his public perception, Hagel actually supported Bush more frequently in 2006 than any of the others seen as potential Republican nominees.

Name / Pres. Support Score (%) / Party Unity Score (%)
Sen. George Allen (VA) / 91 / 96
Sen. Sam Brownback (KS) / 92 / 83
Sen. Bill Frist (TN) / 93 / 94
Sen. Chuck Hagel (NE) / 96 / 84
Rep. Duncan Hunter (CA) / 92 / 94
Sen. John McCain (AZ) / 89 / 76
Sen. Rick Santorum (PA) / 86 / 92

And further down in the comments on the same piece:

"The problem is that while Hagel is rhetorically against the war in Iraq, he has never made a single vote in the United States Senate to express his opposition. Progressives like to point to Hagel as a "liberal" Republican, when nothing could be further from the truth. "

That Would Make Hagel the GOP's Joe Biden (4.00 / 1)
A politician who's talent lies solely in talking the talk, but never walking the walk. So sad.

So? (0.00 / 0)
Hagel has never pretended to be anything but a Conservative Republican who, after voting to allow the decider to go into Iraq, has been an ardent critique. Now, he's ok'd as has essentially all others, the spending spree for the "troops". No surprise.

Look if you all want purity post and track for Kucinich. He's in, committed, wants the troops home, willing to cut the funds, solid progressive voting record, so....?

No, instead let's beat up on Dodd. A 25 year Senator who won't fight with the Lieberman - the dimwit now thought to be a genius because he won a 4th term - bet if you took a poll in CT, he'd get at least the same number of favorables.

For some Dodd is showing class, to others he's a "good old boy". He's a self-admitted "dark horse" whose yet to make his case.

As for the show. Let's get real. Russert did a ROUND table. I'm not much of a Russert fan, but it's a pretty countrolled (civil?) show. And if anyone cared to follow how the discussion flowed they'd note that Dodd wasn't positioned to rebut Lieberman - Hagel was and did a helluva job.

LIEberman (4.00 / 1)
I am not sure about DODD, but I do know that HAGEL stoped LIEberman in his tracks and let him know that he is not one of his SOCK-PUPPETS and LAP-DOG, like H.CLINTON,BIDEN, REID, LANDRUI, and others in the SENATE. IT warmed my HEART.
