Let's Hold A Lieberman Recall (unoffical, of course)

by: imajoebob

Okay, so we don't have recalls in Connecticut (for which I am thankful, save this one time).  We can, however, petition for ballot questions for the 2007 elections.  I propose we get a (non-binding, unenforceable) "Dump Joe?" question on the ballot.

Perhaps something that reads: "A proposal requesting Senator Joseph I. Lieberman to resign for failing to honestly and faithfully represent his Connecticut constituents in the United States Senate, and for misrepresenting himself to the voters in the 2006 election."

That's kind of clumsy, so there's always the plain language question: "Do you support a recall of Senator Joseph I. Lieberman?"

Since this is wholly symbolic I'd hope it works in (at least) one of three ways.  It will humiliate Lieberman (assuming that's actually possible).  If passed, it would surely cripple his political effectiveness in the Senate.  And it might possibly wake the asshole up and make him recognize he's supposed to represent us (including most CT Republicans and Unaffiliateds), not himself, in Congress.

It's clumsy, difficult, and a bit over the top.  But I think that any serious press coverage of the effort it would, at the very least, take him down a peg.

what about Shays? anyone else? (0.00 / 0)
I am not at all against a careful, NOT over the top, Vote of No Confidence People's Resolution or some other highly specific  mass message to the people who are representing us and controlling the decisions that will bring the troops home.

I think first, whatever conditions woudl trigger a vote of  no confidence can be spelled out, and wonder if it would link to link to upcoming legislation or past performance or some specific votes. Would be interested in people's thoughts on most effective action that would be the trigger.

I also think we should know the law as regards impeachment.  I have heard tell that senators can be impeached, but does their own body do that impeaching?  Seems kind of self dealing and not the best check and balance.  Do you -- does anyone -- know more about this?

I'm not flying off the handle, I am just asking the questions about how one holds Congress and the President explicitly accountable. This cannot just slide along and the sending of more troops into Iraq is irresponsible, imho, and flies in the face of military advice, the sentiments of the majority of the people and it would appear the majority of Congress.

If the President is defying the will of the people, by what mechanism do we make that clear?

I know people are saying "we sent a message to Washington," but that is so much rhetoric. We voted for representatives based on the platforms they espoused (or pretended to espouse), and some of our exit poll data indicated the selection of representatives and their views differed from our views.

I'm just thinking out loud - what is the actual mechanism -- some kind of resolutions all over the state via DTCs? Vermont is passing resolutions town by town about impeachment.  What remedies are directly available to the people? What remedies must we insist our elected representatives employ?

PEOPLE TO CONGRESS: Do not even THINK about "symbolic" votes and after-the-fact "hearings" that demonstrate your "concern". WAFFLES are for BREAKFAST, folks!

SMELL THE COFFEE - WE are SERIOUS NOW!

I'm counting on some of the experience and knowledgeable MLNers to have more insight than I -- I'm just saying yes, some very pinpoint specific and completely unambiguous message is apparently what all these people need.

A class action lawsuit? I mean, I really don't want ANY wiggle room in my message here.

CLEAR UNEQUIVOCAL NO ROOM TO MISUNDERSTAND.

BRING EM HOME NOW.

YOU SCREWED UP AND YOU DON'T GET ANY MORE AMERICAN LIVES TO PLAY WITH WHILE YOU AVOID FACING THE FACTS>

The Kiss Float humiliated Joe plenty. (0.00 / 0)
The only problem I have with this recall ballot idea is if more people actually vote against a recall than for it. It would only make his head bigger than it already is.

But, I like your idea of trying to bring back our pompous senator back down to earth. Lieberman is so full of it and so full of himself, that trying to humiliate him would actually do him some good. Pride doth goest before the fall.

The question to fellow MLN'ers is besides an unofficial recall, how else can we humble cocky Joe.

The arc of history is long, but it bends toward justice. --Martin Luther King, Jr.
