House Judiciary Chairman Mike Lawlor: Live on MLN tomorrow night!

by: Maura

Tue Jan 09, 2007 at 19:20:45 PM EST

( - promoted by Maura)

Rep. Mike Lawlor (D-East Haven) serves as Chairman of the House Judiciary Commitee.  He'll be here to live-blog with all of us at MyLeftNutmeg tomorrow night at 7:30PM to discuss the status of the investigation into the "Big Sister" scandal and what the Democratic leadership in both the House and the Senate are doing to respond to Ken Krayeske's arrest and 13 hours in lockup.

The press conference by Rep. Lawlor yesterday was incredibly powerful.  I was so pleased to see Democrats like Lawlor (who was joined by Reps. Denise Merrill and Chris Caruso) treat this incident with the seriousness and gravity it deserves.  Lawlor also had some very complimentary things to say about the CT blogging community and our growing power as citizen watchdogs.

The CT-N press conference is not yet archived online (though Spazeboy is working on getting it up on YouTube.)  If you haven't already listened to it yet, check out Rep. Lawlor on Colin McEnroe's show yesterday.

During our live-blog tomorrow, Mike will also be happy to discuss this year's legislative session, the priorities for the House Judiciary Committee, and the Democratic agenda in Hartford this year.

If you are not able to join us live tomorrow night at 7:30, please leave your questions or comments for Rep. Lawlor here in comments and he will try to respond to all tomorrow night.

This is our first live-blog with a legislator here at MLN - I hope many of you are able to join us so that this will be a lively discussion!  Your active participation will encourage other CT lawmakers to reach out to the progressive blogging community as well.

Thanks in advance to Mike Lawlor, and thank you Maura for making it happen.

I'm looking forward to it.

Tell him thanks... (0.00 / 0)
Yes, tell Mike and the other reps looking into this that their efforts are much appreciated.

I read about this in the Advocate, and was very surprised that they were looking into it. Surprised and pleased.

And thanks, Rep Lawlor, for coming on to speak with us!

Nice to hear that Rep Lawlor thinks good things about us.  So often it's possible to think of the inhibiting effect of negative things - like taking photos of activists while they protest.

But -- to your point about showing up, Maura -- there is the potential for a very positive DIS-inhibiting, freeiing-up of our legislators if they know we're listening, we're engaged, and we're WITH them on issues.

I'm not saying make nice/kiss up -- I'm saying COMMUNICATING honestly and often, and staying on top of what's happening may have a great effect on making it possible (by creating optimal conditions) for them to do the best job they can.

PN (pre-Ned), I knew nothing about local/state politics, including much about who represented me.  I imagine these guys get that a lot (or am I the only  one who was asleep:)

Boy, I sure do now!

Interview with police commissioner & Perez review (0.00 / 0)
Department of Public Safety Commissioner Leonard Boyle was interviewed today by Colin McEnroe and by Ray Dunaway.  (Colin's is more interesting.)

Says there is no "enemies list," acknowledges monitoring blogs for protest plans.  There were several other people on the list of potential threats.  He declined to discuss the specifics of Krayeske's case.

Mayor Perez has asked his police chief to review the arrest.

well, well worthwhile - listen to this as background for liveblog (4.00 / 1)
THANK YOU Spazeboy.  This is a great presser and I am proud of Mike Lawlor for standing up and saying it straight.  He makes me proud to be a Democrat.  But in his standing up, I also feel the pain of all the times our leaders have not stood up, or stood up too little, too late.  I wish and hope this is a trend!

"I used to be a prosecutor, I teach criminal justice, I know many other prosecutors, and NO ONE I have talked to thinks this arrest has any merit" or words to that effect.

Tell me  once again where you stand, Mike, and this time don't sugarcoat it okay?  ; )

There is far more info in this presser than most of the news articles - it's about 20 minutes or so, I think.

Put it on while you're doing something else.  (Then go back and finishe what you thought you were going to do later!)

hypnotic.

"look into my eyes Jodi, look into my eyes.. not around my eyes but into my eyes.. who else is on the list jodi? WHO ELSE DO YOU SEE AS YOUR ENEMY? DOES THE BILL OF RIGHTS MEAN NOTHING TO YOU JODI?"

Ah that it would be so simple.
