Lamont Meet Ups?

by: Kim Hynes

Fri Dec 22, 2006 at 16:56:33 PM EST

I've been thinking a lot about the wonderful community created via the Lamont campaign - very much like the Dean campaign in many ways.  How can we keep our newly created family together?  What should we work on?  Monthly meetup were, and remain, an integral part of the Dean campaign.  Should Lamont meetups start up around the state?  Either to organize in order to work on issues/for candidates or to simply stay together as a group of like minded friends who want to get together.  I don't have the time right now to organize these - but if there is interest  - perhaps something to think about?

Sounds good... (0.00 / 0)
I would definately be interested in regular meet ups...Jake

But let justice roll down like waters...Amos 5:24a

Duplication of effort, IMHO (0.00 / 0)
Why not revivify the DFA Meetups?

Please tell me Ned has more in the works, (0.00 / 0)
with his list of thousands of CT's finest Democrats, than to go backwards and start "Meeting Up", (without an apparent agenda), in the tragic mode of DFA.

Honestly, couldn't we all commit ourselves to Universal Health Coverage? Or Property Tax Reform? Or Energy Issues?

The question isn't whether we want to stay together. It's more a matter of what will keep us active together. Simply put, we need an agenda. Couldn't we discuss the potential agenda instead of silly Meet-Ups?

With Democratic, veto-proof, control of both chambers of the Statehouse, what would Lamont progressives like to see happen in the next legislative session?

For the record... (4.00 / 1)
I want:

1) A same-party replacement law in the event of a mid-term US Senate vacancy. (Tim Johnson scared the shit out of me.)

2) A new minimum wage law looking forward to 2008 that ties the minimum to inflation.

3) A good look at electoral reform. Including an examination of voting machines, same day registration, anti-gerrymandering provisions, online voter registration, and free candidate air-time on network TV.

4) Universal health coverage with major medical insurance for everyone under the age of 30, credits to small business, portability, etc.

5) A serious study of ways to cure our transportation woes, particularly in FFLD CO. (I'd rather pay tolls than sit in traffic.)

6) A study of ways to promote the development of starter homes, modest 1000-1500sqft houses selling for less than 200K. (The kind no township wants to allow.)

7) Energy issues, and why CT is about to move to first place among the fifty states in terms of electric rates.

Support affordable housing candidates. If there are, say, 30 RTM seats, with 60 people running for them, support the 5-10 who will promise to support affordable housing. Likewise TPZ boards.

You know - if you have a possiblility (0.00 / 0)
which involves something other than getting together at "silly meetups" and organizing in real life as opposed to posting about problems on the internet which in all honesty, about 5% of the CT population read, by all means, be my guest.  Meetups were used extremely successfully in the Dean campaign and after to translate on line discussion into action.  Of course DFA meetups could be used - the FFC group is still very vibrant, and I know there is a great deal of interest in reviving the Hartford group, and starting a Bethel area group.

However, NED CAN"T DO THIS ALL BY HIMSELF.  He was a terrific candidate, and will hopefully be doing some interesting things in the future.  However, I can tell you that he is not going to sit around a direct all of you.  If people want to organize, they need to do it.  If a really good organization is maintained with some terrific action, Ned will likely get involved in events and such.  However, Ned was not the campaign.  All of us were.  And it will take all of us to build something further.  Don't wait for Ned to tell you what to do - do something.  Meetups were simply a tool I suggested might be a good way to have regular meetings in which it act.  And again, I wish I had the time to organize them, but I don't.  So a few others will need to step up if it is going to happen.  I am happy to advise how to go about getting something going, and am always available by phone or e-mail.
