A Wall of Shame Letter

by: saramerica

Mon Nov 20, 2006 at 18:02:14 PM EST

I'm cross posting this from my Saramerica blog, because I thought you guys might like to see some of the cr*p mail that is one of the "joys" of being a political columnist.

This one particularly pissed me off because it was written by the father of my daughter's best friend from nursery school. But read on, my fair MLNers:

saramerica :: A Wall of Shame Letter
I never thought I'd be posting a letter from someone I'd considered a friend on the Wall of Shame, but this letter from the father of my daughter's best friend from nursery school (a guy who has socialized at my home)appeared in today's Greenwich Time. Guess we ain't gonna be invited round *there* no more!

Here goes the nasty epistle from Ethan A Brecher, ex-friend.

Greenwich Time columnist Sarah Darer Littman regrets Ned Lamont's loss because he won't be joining the other Democrats in Congress who should now, according to her, hold the Bush administration "accountable" for alleged misconduct since Bush came to office (editorial, Nov 14th)

Littman misses the entire point of this election cycle. The electorate has decided that for now, at least, the Democrats should play a role in governing. The time for holding a governmental official accountable comes through the electoral process, and that has now happened.

It's hard to understand Littman's vindictive desire to punish President Bush, who has not stripped her of her right to vote or express her opinions on the pages of our town's newspaper, and who is probably not listening in on her phone calls or reading her e-mails or keeping tabs on what books she checks out of the library.

For all his purported "sins", President Bush responded forcefully and correctly to 9/11, took out one of the world's most awful dictators, is working hard to keep terrorists from striking again, while at the same time promoting a vibrant economy.

Ned Lamont, who had no ideas other than carping about Iraq, wasn't qualified by experience or temperament to serve as our senator. He launched his general Senate campaign with two notorious anti-Semites at his side, and sunk from there.

Littman should celebrate her freedom and the preservation of her liberities in this difficult time and not seek to take revenge on her fellow citizens who have made her way of life possible. If all she wants is a pound of flesh over the next two years, she will have many more long and sad election nights to follow.

I don't even know where to begin to wade my way through the ridiculous crap in this letter. Ethan's obviously been overdosing on Fox News Kool-Aid. Let's start in paragraph 2 - "The time for holding a governmental official accountable comes through the electoral process, and that has now happened." I'd give anything to know where Ethan was when the Republican controlled Congress was busy trying to impeach President Clinton for lying about a blowjob, something that hasn't cost thousands of American lives. I mean seriously - Clinton was re-elected President, so why did those nasty vindictive Republicans not just roll over and listen to the voice of the electorate when it spoke. After all, the voting public held Clinton accountable and re-elected him?

Frankly, it's Ethan A Brecher who has missed the point. The reason that the Democrats gained control of Congress is because the public WANTS there to be some checks and balances. They WANT Congress to stop being the Bush Administration's bitch and just letting the Executive f*ck this country up down and sideways.

Then there's *this* little gem: "It's hard to understand Littman's vindictive desire to punish President Bush, who has not stripped her of her right to vote or express her opinions on the pages of our town's newspaper, and who is probably not listening in on her phone calls or reading her e-mails or keeping tabs on what books she checks out of the library."

See, even Ethan, who happens to be a lawyer, can't definitely state that Bush *isn't* listening in on my phone calls or reading my e-mails or keeping tabs on my library borrowings. As a lawyer, I would have thought Ethan would have had more respect for the law; would have a great understanding of the Constitution, would have thought that these things were, you know, important.

And I guess Ethan doesn't know about how before the 2004 election, Durham Monsma, the publisher of the Greenwich Time/Advocate was getting a lot of pressure to shut me up, how I got an e-mail from my then editor saying that perhaps I could lay off writing about Bush for a while, to which I responded that if the paper was going to stop me from writing my conscience then I couldn't in good conscience continue writing for the paper. Lord knows, I don't do it for the money...or the fan mail.

The last paragraph is just plain stupid: "Littman should celebrate her freedom and the preservation of her liberities in this difficult time and not seek to take revenge on her fellow citizens who have made her way of life possible." Bush has done more than any other American president to destroy our way of life. To say that HE has made my way of life possible shows a fundamental lack of understanding about international law, about constitutional law and the intentions of the framers to have checks and balances, about what our basic freedoms are all about.

So Mr. Ethan A Brecher, resident of Greenwich, CT and former friend, I hereby post you on the SARAMERICA WALL OF SHAME. You've earned it.

Interesting family (0.00 / 0)
They've given money to Republicans and Democrats alike, almost down the middle. Dodd seems a favorite, and they gave money to Kerry, but also to Shays and Simmons. A contribution by his father in mid September 06 was the first contribution he'd ever given to Holy Joe, which is interesting as they have poltiical contributoins dating back over 25 years.

Wall of Shame? (0.00 / 0)
Is this a regular feature in your column? Something like Al Franken's "Hate Mail of the Day"?

PS: Is your column online somewhere?

The Wall of Shame is on my blog (0.00 / 0)

It's where I respond to morons who write nasty LTEs

It's a shame to see that kind of ignorance coming from someone that you once considered a friend, and who obviously had enough intelligence to gain a law degree. But then again, so did Ann Coulter.

You certainly find out who your real friends are and who the idiots are when you write a column. I say, no loss in this case.

Ethan Brecher - today's "worst person in the worrrrrrrrrrrrrld".

What an ignorant s.o.b. (0.00 / 0)
It's amazing how threatened people get when you take a public stance on something. Is Brecher a personal injury lawyer by any chance?

I believe that time wounds all heels. -John Lennon

exactly which difficult time is he living through? (0.00 / 0)
Deflection and discrediting the source are two Frank Luntz favorites - did you see the Daily Show bit where they had him train two little kids how to run for president?

If this is the best Ethan can do, he's not a very good advertisement for his skills as a lawyer, because to be a good lawyer, he would  have to have a healthy respect for the *law*, rather than a healthy respect for the fact that the law exists to punish and manage those mere mortals who are not above the law, as he and his President apparently are.  I could name names, but hey, if I did that, some people would probably start singing the Doxology (http://www.cyberhymn...).
I suppose the posture of being sophisticatedly withering will play well to those Greenwich political math wizards who think In The Know = Head In Sand.  (hyperbole intentional - D. E. W. counterwithering offense protective device activated)

His letter, as you kind of imply, is one of those modern political parodoxes which, on the one hand, would not be a good method by which to hold water, but on the other hand,  does appear to be *carrying* water.

I guess I should include at least a modicum of substance here, lest my post be viewed by Ethan as a mere campfire or cybernetic handwarming device.

Anyhow, he says: "Littman should celebrate her freedom and the preservation of her liberties in this difficult time."

Tip!  Toe! Carefully! across the eggshells. Pick those "freedoms" you choose carefully, Ethan, 'cos some of them just seem for some reason to be going away - habeas corpus, right to privacy, illegal wiretapping, "freedom to be as long as you're just like me" come to mind all too quickly.

I think the "difficult times" relate to (0.00 / 0)
the fact that the Dems took back both houses of Congress. Everything was just swell when Congress let W roll over our civil liberties and illegally invade a sovereign country to get rid of that evil nasty Saddam.

That Daily Show thing with Frank Luntz was freakin' hilarious. Or it would have been if it wasn't so frightening to see the guy in action, and know that these slime tactics are actually being played out right here in the Nutmeg state.

I thought it was a terrific public service (0.00 / 0)
to show the guy in action.  Dems win an election?  Lieberman posts a link designed to Discredit The Source.

Ha, my new cooncept, Armed with the obvious I am now dangerous (LOL).

Another great Luntz clip (0.00 / 0)
THIS is what I would add to future Dem candidate websites: - a smoke and mirrors section that shows how slime works, and takes apart ads to expose the gears and pulleys.

Have a "Where's Waldo?" contest on a blog to let people figure out how the message is constructed.

Any Project for Civil Discourse should have its subversive elements!

Why not invite him to socialize in YOUR home? (0.00 / 0)
You said:
Guess we ain't gonna be invited round *there* no more

But honestly, why not invite him to your home at the soonest possible moment?  Say, perhaps, December 8th?

He might have quite a lively evening! ; )

.

now *that* would be fun! (0.00 / 0)
I might just do that...cause I still like his wife!

[ Parent ]
The stupidest non-Bush/O'Reilly thing I've heard (0.00 / 0)
President Bush, who has not stripped her of her right to vote or express her opinions on the pages of our town's newspaper, and who is probably not listening in on her phone calls or reading her e-mails or keeping tabs on what books she checks out of the library.

He's PROBABLY not spying on you! What's your freaking problem, commie?

I think our local Army recruiting office needs to contact Mr. Brecher, they take 40-somethings now.

It's Morning in America. Too bad Reagan's not here to see it. - Me

oh he hasn't stripped her of her right to vote? (0.00 / 0)
Only stripped certain citizens' votes out of the tally?  You have the right, but the power is with them wot counts the votes....This man is so confident that sweating the small stuff like habeas corpus are so ridiculously irrelevant.  Yikes.  Scratch the surface and a crazy man appears.

Let the kids be friends though (0.00 / 0)
If the kid is a good kid and your kid gets along with him or her, then try to keep them as friends.

As for his letter, it's crap and so easy to dissect.  I'm surprised he's a lawyer (see many Republicans are) since his arguments have more holes than Swiss cheese.

1.  "Alleged Misconduct"  I think we can specify so much of that.  Moreover, is he really against accountability?
2.  "vindictive desire to punish George Bush"  How about make America better or hold him accountable?  Does he have proof of this vindictive desire?  Nope.
3.  "probably not"  The mere fact that he has to mention all these obvious things and qualify it with probably not undermines his whole letter and makes him look like a fool.
4.  I thought you were exercising your freedom and liberty by voting, writing letters, etc... Oh well, guess in the world of Brecher freedom and liberty is defined differently.
5.  Sara you are the kind of person who makes our way of life(or what should be our way of life) possible

Joe Lieberman and George Bush believe that our govt should cut and run on capturing Osama Bin Laden so that Bush and the neocons could invade Iraq. Despite no Wmds and no links to 9/11, Lieberman supports that decision.

I bumped into his wife at exercise class this morning... (0.00 / 0)
and although I was tempted to say, "So, I guess Ethan doesn't like my politics, huh?" I decided I like *her* too much to put her on the spot like that.

5. *blushes* Thanks Big Dave! :>)

Do either of them know that you put it here and on your blog? n/t (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
Don't know. (0.00 / 0)
He doesn't seem the type to read "liberal" blogs like this.
I guess if he self-googles he might find out. But the way I figure it, he attacked me in a very public and unnecessarily nasty way (he could have e-mailed me personally, as others do) so he can't complain if I post his response publicly. It was in the Greenwich Time letters to the editor section - so is clearly in the public domain.
