Instant classic from tonight's debate and roundup

by: ctblogger

"I pray I'll never be in politics so long as to give an answer like that."

John DeStefano's response to Jodi Rell's wishy-washy answer to which candidate she supports for senate.

There is more under the fold

ctblogger :: Instant classic from tonight's debate and roundup
So, Rell's not Superwoman afterall.

If there was ever a time DeStefano needed to make a big impact in this race, it during this debate and it seemed that the mayor delivered the goods and came out on top (especially in the second half).

DeStefano's attacks on Rell were quick, direct and right on the money and when the governor didn't have a response to the mayor's attack over her campaign contributions, it seemed like she just ran out of gas. In fact, it seemed like she did more ducking and dodging questions and avoiding DeStefano's criticisms and that didn't make her look to good.

I thought a key moment for DeStefano was when asked to give one mistake he made as mayor and stated the Long Wharf Mall project. For a politician to own up and say something like that (which was the truth) took guts and you could sense that he sincere in his statement.  On the other hand, I almost fell out of my chair when Gov Rell pulled a President Bush moment and stated that she couldn't think of ONE mistake she made in her two and a half years as governor. The boos from the crowd were so loud that I was waiting for the tomatoes to come flying at her.

And her closing statement...oh my, cue up the violins!

As Lisa Moody handed out the tissues, Rell stated her tear jerking sob story by stating that she never thought she would be governor (ah, didn't you create a exploratory committee a few years back...I think it was for 2002), throws in the good ol' "I saved the sub base" line (oh, I'm sorry, I thought Joe Lieberman saved the base), kicks up the emotional level with the cancer survivor line (you could really moans from the audience), and finished it all off talking about...well, herself.

In short, more about me, less about what she can do as governor.

Here, watch the video highlight for yourself and decide.

In all, I think both were off to a slow start but clearly during the second half, DeStefano clearly pulls out ahead and takes the win.

What do you think.

A transcription of Governor Rell's compliment to Ned Lamont: (0.00 / 0)
For new and knowh-... um, and um... probably less of any kind of uh... foresight except for one issue, I would consider Mister Lamont in that category.

I pray that no English teacher ever has to correct a sentence like that.

I was at the Debate (4.00 / 1)
Jodi Rell proved beyond any doubt that she has no right to be even the first Selectman of the smallest town in Ct.She is an accidental Governor and makes W look like a genius.

The Republicans in attendence were hanging their heads in shame as they exited. They too knew DeStefano made her look like an idiot.Without a script she's lost.

Rell really didn't expect to be questioned on the US Senate race (0.00 / 0)
You could tell by the look of surprise in her face that she was entering a mine field and she blew up.

We have no doubt who she supports -- Lieberman, even though she bungled the answer.

The fact that she wasn't prepared for the "your biggest mistake" (4.00 / 2)
question proves her debate team were a bunch of idiots.Biggest mistake/biggest acheivement questions are asked so often anyone with an ounce of brains would have had an answer ready.

Being prepared and being able to think on your feet are what crisis management are all about.Electing a Governor who it is so obvious lacks those skills would be dangerous.

It's time  for the accidental Governor return to Brookfeild before her lack of intelect turns a crisis  into a catastrophe.

Rell is perfect on everything (0.00 / 0)
She can't see that she has made any mistakes?  That is really scary.  Surely there must be something: Lisa Moody?, no!; I-84?, NO!; I-95?, no sir!; John Rowland?, no way!; getting a good cop fired for doing his job an arresting her son for felony theft? ....

Every leader makes mistakes.  If you can't own up to them, you're not a mature adult.

She will fall after that weak performance.

A flash of hope (3.00 / 1)
What I saw Monday night was an inspirational effort by DeStefano. Clearly, his best debate performance, he outclassed Rell, articulated more clearly his points and showed a solid grasp of the problems facing this state. You should of seen the look on Rell supporters' faces as they walked out of the theater to chants of "Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Jodi Rell has got to go!" You would of thought they were 30 points down. I was worried they were going to start crying. It's obvious to anyone who watched this debate, that DeStefano is the better candidate. As I watched I could almost feel Rell's lead slipping away. DeStefano won this debate hands down and showed why he will be a great governor.

She doesn't even know the names of her own departments (0.00 / 0)
The best was when she tried to talk about stuff she SHOULD know.  She is is the Gov., yet, she can't even tell you who is incharge of what in her administration.  She should have hid Moody underneath the podium - that is, if they would have made the stand bigger.  Maybe Moody should just answer for her.

I heard there was a Mustang and a Skido.

If anyone has know of any lies, distortions, or obvious screw-ups from Rell... (0.00 / 0)
PLEASE add them to this comment list. I'm working on something and could use everyone's help.

Moodygate (0.00 / 0)
Here is an article that tells of Moody's clearing.  She solicited state employees, in the Governor's office, while on state time for a private, Rell for Governor Campaign.  Jodi Rell would not and will not fire her.  More than "what did Jodi know and when did she know" for John Rowland, this issue speaks to her true nature.

She is not able to control her underlings, almost all of which were appointed by Rowland, and they break the law.

Jodi Rell practices Rowland "Gift Giving" (0.00 / 0)

Here is another story about Rell spending the surplus to ensure her job.  Much of what she is doing though is old news to legislators.  She is bringing back old stuff to double-up her accomplishment.

DPUC Breaking the Law (0.00 / 0)
http://www.courant.c...

DPUC withheld there rate hike until after election day, putting the people of this state at risk for crippling rate hikes in the dead of winter.

There is no allowance in the law for this and the implication is on a political favour to the governor by prolonging the rate hike release date.

She didn't answer the challenge last night.  It is my opinion that this wil be a huge issue, but no one is promoting it right now.  I don't think lobbying JDS will work either.

Rell sets example, accepts state contractor campaign contributions (0.00 / 0)
Business is good in CT if you are an independant contractor for the State.  So good you are willing to help ensure your Governor stays.  And the money is too good to pass up, says Rell.  Even though she says she won't except state contractor money or lobbyest money, she did it anyway.

Rell and special favors: Moodygate was never meant to be prosecuted. (0.00 / 0)

Because I can't pay the fee for archived reports at the Courant, I have settled for Gengis Conn's post eralier in March.  Enjoy.
