The Real Reason Schlesinger Is A Republican Pariah

by: BranfordBoy

Thu Sep 21, 2006 at 21:02:37 PM EDT

Tim Tagaris, over at the offical Lamont campaign blog, hits the nail on the head about why the Repugs are ditching Alan Schlesinger.

What price tag can you put on continuously regurgitating talking points that read “reasonable Democrats like Joe Lieberman recognize the importance of staying the course” or “Look how divided Democrats are on Iraq” or “Some Democrats are open to changing Social Security…” or “Moderate Democrats like Joe Lieberman recognize Samuel Alito is fit to serve on the Supreme Court.” What price can you put on Joe helping three Republican House incumbents against change agents from the Democratic Party?

You think Alan Schlesinger was cast aside because he counts cards? Give me a break.

You have criminaly convicted congressmen like Duke Cunningham, and “public servants” like Bob Ney and Tom DeLay receiving unwavering public support till the very end. You have Republican candidates for re-election in close races brandishing shotguns at dinner parties who received more support.

And you think a Wampum card is the reason Republicans decided not to play within their own party in this race?

Spare me.

I think Alan's skill at counting cards should make him a folk hero among a wide swath of the Republican electorate. They all believe they deserve something for nothing.

Lieberman on WTIC Friday (0.00 / 0)
Lieberman will be on Jim Vicevich's show on WTIC AM on Friday at 10:45 am.  I doubt Joe would allow call-ins, but who knows?

Tim hit the nail on the head (4.00 / 2)
Having Judas( That's the name Chuck Shumer gave to Lieberman long ago) amongst the ranks of the Democrats has served the Republicans better than having another Republican Senator.Lieberman  even tried to make Ws Social Security Privitization scheme "Bipartisan".

Schlesinger Is A Much Better Candidate Than Lieberman (3.00 / 1)
Schlesinger is more of a moderate, and doesn't have the record of being a neocon fascist vote-skipper that Lieberman does.

BRILLIANT BUT SIMPLE (4.00 / 2)
TAgaris has it exactly right.

To begin with, Schlessinger was chosen becase he'd lose to Kermit the Frog.  The "republicans" picked the weakest possible candidate to help Lieberman.

Second, the defeat of Lieberman is more important(although all are) than the defeat of Santorum, Dewine, Talent, Allen, Burns, Corker, or Chafee.

Today's republican party, in reality, represents about 20% of the electorate.  They've been hijacked by extremists who deserve to be irrelevant in political discourse.  The BEST way to make extremists seem reasonable is to have a Joe Lieberman around to come to the rescue.

For example, Samuel Alito is an insane jurist so far to the right that even Bush's head of Homeland security (Chertoff) had to disagee with Alito.  So you take an Alito, a guy who comes from the farthest 10% fringe, get a guy like Joe Lieberman to vote to end cloture, and all of a sudden, another 40% of Americans feel subconsciously that this guy can't be all that bad b/c "Joe Lieberman won't filibuster him."

A win for Lamont is so so so so vital for all Americans.  It means that in the future, when Republicans want to win, you better run a candidate much further to the left of JOe Lieberman because for the next 30 years, the one time "centrist democrat" will be deemed way too far to the right for most Americans.  As for that Center, very soon it may be defined as somewhere to the left of Hillary Clinton.

Joe Lieberman and George Bush believe that our govt should cut and run on capturing Osama Bin Laden so that Bush and the neocons could invade Iraq. Despite no Wmds and no links to 9/11, Lieberman supports that decision.

Exactly!! (0.00 / 0)
It is for those very reasons that I believe the CT Senate race is the most important of 2006, and also why I believe that the GOP will dump millions into the Lieberman campaign and possibly even attempt to steal it if Holy Joe falls behind in the polls.

I still tell my Republican friends that Joe's a Democrat (0.00 / 0)
I think its going to be very difficult for Ned to win this thing if Joe gets 75% of the Republican votes.  I socialize with wealthy white men in Darien and New Canaan, who are overwhelmingly Republican. These guys still have Bush stickers on their cars.

I ask them which Democrat they are voting for and ask them why they are abandoning their party.  These are guys who have never voted for Joe before.  These are the guys who have the latest Clinton jokes. If I can shame a few of them into voting for Schlesinger I figure it helps.

It's Morning in America. Too bad Reagan's not here to see it. - Me

Not really (0.00 / 0)
Lieberman needs that high a percentage to even be competitive in the race. The uncertainty and outright fear in the Lieberman camp is that he won't be able to retain anywhere near that number for the general election. Another reason why any debates which feature Schelsinger only hurt Lieberman, no matter what gaffes Alan may commit, he simply can't go any lower. But if Lieberman wants to roll the dice so be it.

70% of dems, 50% of independents wins it (0.00 / 0)
Lamont easily could get these numbers, if he does he wins.

However our goal should be 80% dems, 60% independents, 20% republicans.

According to the aRG poll Lamont had 47% of independents and 64% of democrats and trailed by 2 points.  Move that 64% up to 70 and Lamont wins for sure.

Time to emphasize how JOe is taking money from republicans to bring these voters home.

Joe Lieberman and George Bush believe that our govt should cut and run on capturing Osama Bin Laden so that Bush and the neocons could invade Iraq. Despite no Wmds and no links to 9/11, Lieberman supports that decision.

That's about what I figured also (0.00 / 0)
Ned slightly over 70% for Dems and winning the Independents, plus a nominal number of non-Bush cult republicans (10-15%).

I wrote this a while back here. It's quite prescient and worth a reread. http://www.myleftnut...
