Murphy: "Johnson Screws Seniors"

by: BranfordBoy

Sun Sep 17, 2006 at 07:43:13 AM EDT

Chris Murphy delivered the Dem response to Bush's weekly radio address and took the opportunity to slam Nancy Johnson on Medicare.

"The Bush administration announced this week that Medicare premiums will be going up again and could even carry a new, expensive monthly fee," Murphy said. "This new tax on seniors will affect millions of Americans and thousands of people in Connecticut."

The Medicare law is complicated and at least part of the blames lies with Johnson, he said. Johnson heads the House Ways and Means' subcommittee on health.

"She wrote the confusing Medicare law in 2003," he said. "She is also one of many Republicans who opposes allowing Medicare to negotiate for lower drug prices - a Democratic idea and, more importantly, a good idea."

Johnson's campaign spokesliar took the position that seniors are too stupid to realize that that the rectal discomfort they're experiencing isn't a holdover from their last sigmoidoscopy.

Murphy in the news (0.00 / 0)
Murphy in the NY Times on Johnson's wacky Mcarthyite ad:

Mr. Murphy, a state senator, says the commercial misrepresents his position. He says he would not force the government to delay wiretaps on calls involving suspected terrorists, but would require officials to follow procedures set forth in existing law: the attorney general can authorize the emergency use of electronic surveillance if he seeks court authorization within 72 hours. Mr. Murphy maintains that the administration has flouted the requirements of current law, and in a statement this week he said, “Nancy Johnson’s loyalty to President Bush is so strong that she supports him even when he breaks the law.”

Here's video of Murphy talking to college Dems, courtesy of Spazeboy.

The New Britain Herald reports on an old June poll putting Murphy ahead of Johnson.  The poll was conducted by the Working Families Party, which has since endorsed Murphy, meaning that Murphy will appear on two ballot lines.  There was one interesting bit of news on the findings:

The survey found that unaffiliated and self-identified swing voters are the key to victory in the Fifth. The survey also found that with registered Democrats, WFP messages have little effect. However, among registered Republicans and unaffiliated voters WFP messages increase the Murphy vote from 5 to 10 percent.
"These are voters who don't have a very favorable opinion of either party," Green explained.
"They define themselves as ticket-splitters; sometimes they vote Democrat; other times, Republican," he said. "We appeal to the 45 percent of the electorate who aren't at either end of the political spectrum, but find themselves in the middle and politically frustrated."

chris murphy's identity (0.00 / 0)
chris murphy should proudly bill himself as a democrat in all of his commercials--nancy is hiding from the republican label, if he follows her into this "we're all just non-partison servants but i'm a better one" scenario, she wins.
in our town, the republicans generally hold the electoral majority, but every now and then they become so outrageous a democratic council is elected. when that happens, republicans immediately begin whining about non-partisanship and how "we're all elected to do our best for the town." when they have the majority, they just say "he, we've got the votes." if you don't think the same dynamic is going on here, you're not looking.
anyway, in a year when people across the country prefer generic dems to generic members of god's own party, why on earth would he NOT label himself a democrat?
