New Primary Date: August 28?

by: BranfordBoy

Sat Aug 05, 2006 at 11:31:17 AM EDT

The Bush Administration is coming to the aid of their favorite son in the form of a lawsuit by U.S. attorney Kevin J. O'Connor that could have the effect of extending the primary until August 28th for overseas absentee ballots only.

The excuse is that 81 towns were late in sending out absentee ballots to overseas voters, most of them military. Some 700 ballots were affected.

Avi "Don't Be Crude" Salzman reports in tomorrow's New York Times (no link):

By Connecticut law, absentee ballots must be received by the time the polls close on the day of the primary, which is 8 p.m. this year. States are supposed to send the ballots out at least 30 days before the election, so that soldiers and opthers have time to fil them out and return them, the suit said.

Susan "I'm For Joe"  Bysiewicz immediately caved, winning praise from O'Connor for her speedy acquiesence.

Another effect of the lawsuit is that the state will give "extra scrutiny" to municipal election officials. In other words, Lieberman loyalists will be meddling in your precincts to make sure they get the result they want.

Also, the state will accept "special federal write-in ballots from people who didn't receive absentee ballots." This will allow Lieberman to beat the bushes in places overseas where he thinks hidden support exists to inflate his vote total.

Presumably the theory is that Lieberman will be a familiar name to Nutmeggers working, studying, or just chilling overseas whereas Lamont will be a total unknown.

Of course, if Lamont's margin of victory is so large that it dwarfs the number of absentee ballots outstanding, all this becomes a moot point.

All the more reason for Lamont supporters to get their Democratic butts in gear and GET OUT THE VOTE.

Also an excuse giver (0.00 / 0)
..for politicians to hold off on endorsing Ned Lamont should he win by a narrow margin. Chris Dodd especially falls into that category.

In the Future (0.00 / 0)
Because of this screwup, and because of the Secretary of the State's role as chief elections officer in the State, I think this will hurt her in the future when she goes for a higher office in the future.

Democratic politicians all hurting themselves (0.00 / 0)
The support all of these politicians are giving to Lieberman is going to hurt them ALL.

I personally will not pull a lever in the future for John Larson again.  Up in the air if I will for Dodd.

Those who are sticking up for him, even though they admit they don't agree with him, are idiots, as far as I am concerned.  Don't they see the Republican and Lobbyist backing the man is getting?
