| I've been getting a lot of email from friends about the exciting news they're reading that Lamont is so far up in the polls that Lieberman is scrapping his GOTV operation entirely.
I call bullshit. Don't believe it for a minute.
I've had to drive by the Lieberman HQ in my city twice today. This morning, it was a beehive of LieberStaffer activity - the kind of crowded chaos that any experienced political volunteer recognizes as a healthy sign in the last few days of a campaign. This afternoon, I stopped in to pick up a Malloy bumper sticker (Lieberman and Malloy share the building) and it was somewhat less busy, presumably because teams of canvassers are on the street. There were no Hamburglers there, just two extraordinarily nice (and tired and hot) Lieberman canvassers, who very kindly offered me water even though I had just come from an air-conditioned car and they had been pounding hot sidewalks all day. A dozen or so people were busy phonebanking.
They're not giving up. Don't buy this spin for a minute.
Furthermore, don't buy in to the new rumor that Lieberman might drop out if he loses by 10 points. First of all, Lieberman should drop out if he loses, period. No arbitrary "do over" goal is acceptable to Democratic primary voters. They're playing some sick expectations game here; don't be distracted by it.
And as Jesse Jackson told us, these last few days are full of distractions. Don't be distracted. Don't fall for an expectations trick that could make any of us complacent. Eric Schmeltzer at Huffington Post guesses:
This is the campaign's true Hail Mary - declare the whole thing over in hopes that Lamont volunteers and voters exhale a little before election day, and maybe jolt soft Lieberman support into gear, by painting scenarios of a Joe-less world.
Don't fall for it. Volunteer for the final push.
If you participated in the Family, Friends, and Neighbors program, you may have gotten your call list today. Please consider reaching out to your elderly neighbors to check on them during this heat wave. Reaching out as a Lamont volunteer is an easy way to break the ice and make sure they're okay in this heat. |
