Is Lieberman Push-Polling CT Democrats?

by: Larkspur

Wed Jun 28, 2006 at 22:16:30 PM EDT

(More Rovian strategies from the Lieberman camp - and some good detective work by Larkspur. - promoted by Neal Fink)

I got a call tonight from some polling group asking about the Lieberman-Lamont race and some of the other ones.

I got the distinct feeling that it was a pro-Lieberman polling group doing this because of the way the questions were framed, specifically the Lamont-Lieberman questions.  See Lamontblog(unofficial) http://lamontblog.blogspot.com/2006/06/lieberman-push-polling-ct-voters.html  for a taste of what they asked.

The woman I got sounded like she was Asian Indian.  Don't know if the polling company was based in India or not.  I work with Asian Indians at work and I had the same trouble understanding the caller as I do some of my Asian Indian co-workers.

I think they were also asking questions to find another line of attack on Ned.

Larkspur :: Is Lieberman Push-Polling CT Democrats?
One thing they asked me about Lamont was how I felt that Lamont lived in a $6 million home and that he had sold his Lexus and purchased a Toyota Prius.  The implication on the Prius was that it was a campaign prop to make him look like a progressive.

I know Ned changed cars, but sensed he was going to be driving all over the state to meet voters, so the Prius is a more economical car.  I'm planning on purchasing a Prius in a couple years.

I was also asked who I'd support in the governor's race.  I told them I'm leaning DeStefano right now.

Anyone else get a call?

P.S. the phone number from the polling company on my caller id is (801) 437-3150  The NSA would be proud of me.

Did you ask? (0.00 / 0)
Did you ask them who was paying for the poll?  It's my understanding that they HAVE to tell you that information.  You can also ask where they are calling from.  Many employees will tell you where they work.  It will be interesting if Joe is outsourcing his push-polling to India.

BTW, Ned doesn't drive a Prius.  He has a hybrid SUV.  (Perhaps he also has a Prius, but I know he has another hybrid.)

This "poll" is sleazy and dishonest, following the pattern that Lieberman has already set.

The Lieberman campaign is showing that they will do ANY dishonest thing in order to retain power.  They know very well what Lamont actually voted for in Greenwich and they know that they are fundamentally distorting his record -- so much that they are essentially lying about it.  Lieberman  has shown that he has NO principles when it comes to retaining his power at all costs.

No, I did't ask. I wanted to go through the poll (0.00 / 0)
I thought if I asked that they would hang up.  I was curious about the questions.

Since my caller-id had the phone number, I didn't think to ask.  Course the name was "PRIVATE" on the caller-id display.

It sounded more Asian Indian than Filipino (0.00 / 0)
I was friend to a pair of Filipino sisters at college.  They spoke very good English and had a different accent than Asian Indians.  But it's hard to tell for sure.  The caller could have been Filipino.

about two nights ago. A young college age lady asking if I would answer some questions for a political poll. I asked who was paying for it and she refused to tell me so I hung up.

LOL. Joe's jealous! (0.00 / 0)
Wait'll you see the pad he'll be upgrading to in DC, after selling his New Haven home and his Mom's house in Stamford.

as I said elsewhere (0.00 / 0)
1.  It's not a push-poll if it's repeating attacks he's already made publicly.

2.  The real news is that he's (assuming he paid for it) still testing the message of whether running as an independent will sell with the public.  That's the story.

"It's not a push-poll if it's repeating attacks he's already made publicly."

Really?, Check out the definition of push polling here

You caveat is nowhere to be found in the definition.

Your defense of Lieberman is becoming more and more tortured Adam B.

"The main advantage of push polls is that they are an effective way of maligning an opponent ("pushing" voters away) while avoiding responsibility for the distorted or false information used in the push poll."

He's already offered this information.  I'm not defending Lieberman; I'm defending the English language.

No, you're being duplicitous... (0.00 / 0)
It would help if you'd simply identify yourself as a Lieberman supporter. If you were really a stand-up guy, you might go further and explain why you support Joe.

All you've ever said was that you thought this primary was a waste of money. Well, that's now spilt milk. The primary will happen. Can't you tell us why you would vote for Joe over Lamont?

[ Parent ]
honestly (0.00 / 0)
If I lived in Connecticut, I don't know who I'd vote for.  Lamont's views are closer to my own on some issues, but Lieberman's seniority does matter, and he's really good on some issues that do matter to me.  I also do question whether a Lamont win could have a negative spillover effect on our challengers in red states, who might be attacked for "being in a party that kicked out moderate Joe," etc.

The question for me would be whether, over the next month, Lamont can make the leap from being "guy with progressive views" to "someone who'll be a good Senator", because it takes a lot more than good views to succeed on the Hill.

Lieberman's seniority (0.00 / 0)
How does Lieberman's seniority help CT when CT is ranked 49/50 in terms of federal dollars reinvested in the state? What does Lieberman get back for CT in exchange for jumping in the sack with President Bush and his chums at Fox News?

Lieberman's seniority doesn't do squat for the people of CT.

last time I checked (0.00 / 0)
You're still making submarines.

I wasn't aware of the 49/50 figure (source?); obvs, Lieberman has the charts-of-pork on his site for people to peruse.  Specter did a very good job of that in his 2004 primary, fwiw.

[ Parent ]
the source (0.00 / 0)
Submarines, schmubmarines...I would prefer it if Joe took concrete steps to reduce the dependency the CT arms industry has on the ability of our nation to go to war. Why isn't he working to divert the talent and resources of CT defense companies to researching renewable energy sources? Why isn't he doing something about the fact that so many CT jobs depend on warfare?

Anyway, this is my source (on pg 6)--which actually indicates that CT was ranked 49th in 1993 and 48th in 2003 in terms of federal dollars reinvested. I don't think we have improved since 2003, although I will continue to research.

This report also indicates that between the period 1990-2005, CT has the slowest job growth in the nation (ranking 50th).

Joe is a crappy senator on so many different levels--he's got to go.

thanks (0.00 / 0)
Interesting link, and I appreciate it.

Given that CT has the highest income per capita in the country, isn't there a strong progressive argument that it *should* be on the low end of the $/person in/out scale?  It still does rather well on the second scale on that chart (appropriations per person, not per income), esp compared to MA.

[ Parent ]
donor state (0.00 / 0)
granted, it's fair to make the progressive argument that CT should be on the low end of the $/person in/out scale given that it has the highest per income per capita in the country. However, I still feel that CT ought to be getting more than it is. CT has a lot of problems that need to be addressed--and Joe is not a good advocate for the people of CT.

He ought to spend more time in Bridgeport than in Baghdad.

My town in Northeast CT is one of the poorer towns in CT (0.00 / 0)
We rank near the bottom of 169 towns in the state.

Per capita income per state is not an accurate description of income dispersal across the state.  The high per capita income is due to the Goldcoast, the Fairfield countery, area.

The poverty in my town contributes to the high child sex abuse here.  According to a Hartford Courant article a couple years ago, my town had the highest child sexual abuse in the state and it was directly affected by the high poverty rate in the town.

[ Parent ]
Interesting arguement (4.00 / 1)
but the progressive taxation arguement is not that the wealthy should pay more, yet get less back.

If you pay more in taxes as an individual, do you get less protection from our armed forces? Do you get less service from the DHS? Do you get less representation from your Senator (well, excluding Joe Lieberman who belives we voted for him to express his own opinions rather than represent CT residents)?

I always used to laugh that Hawaii has an "Interstate" paid for by Federal tax dollars. But the truth is that many people use interstates and never leave their states, the goal of the Interstate system was to make it easier for business to move workers from place to place as well as move goods. It wasn't about just tying the states together with a single transit system, so an Interstate in Hawaii is still doing the purpose that it was designed for, and was a good investment (expecially since it was Hawaii tax dollars that were kept in Hawaii to make it).

The issue that was raised is that Lieberman doesn't make sure that CT tax dollars are spent in CT. Some believe that his "seniority" is a joke because he makes claims like he saved the sub base (there were a large number of people that were involved with saving that base, not just Joe) but at the same time inner city schools are failing because he hasn't done enough to get federal dollars back so the State can invigorate the education system.

The issue is really, is the common good in CT being met? If so, then there is no reason that additional money shouldn't be shared with those that have less. But if the common good in CT is not being met, then that money should be spent there first, and once the common good has been met, then that money should be shared with those that have less in ways that help them help themselves (develop infastructure, develop education and training, etc.), so they will no longer need support.

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

Please (0.00 / 0)
let me know where you came up with this definition of "push-poll" that requires that the attacks somehow be different or new from statements made in public. I have always understood the term as meaning simply a dishonest attempt to influence public opinion under the guise of asking for the public's opinion.

It's my sense that he's not "testing the message" of going Indy. He's got to have done that polling already, it's too late in the game for that. I think he's preparing the battleground for his inevitable jump by attempting to reassure Dems that he won't caucus with the GOP.

If we had the full text of one of the calls this would be easier.

In addition, based on the summary of DailyKos we saw, this doesn't sound like it was a short call.

Push Poll

A push poll is a political campaign technique in which an individual or organization attempts to influence or alter the view of respondents under the guise of conducting a poll. Push polls are generally viewed as a form of negative campaigning. The term is also sometimes used incorrectly to refer to legitimate polls which test political messages, some of which may be negative. Push polling has been condemned by the American Association of Political Consultants.

[ Parent ]
Again (0.00 / 0)
Not every poll that tests negative information about a candidate is a push poll.  Here some of what the American Association of Political Consultants has said:

"The AAPC and AAPOR both observe that in a true opinion survey, research firms interview only a small random sample of the population to be studied, typically ranging from up to 1,000 interviews for a major statewide study to as few as 300 in a congressional district. With so-called push polls, the objective is to reach a high percentage of voters, usually at the close of the election."

"The AAPC and CMOR state that interviews conducted by real polling firms generally range in length from at least five minutes for even the shortest of tracking questionnaires to more than 30 minutes for a major benchmark study. So-called push poll interviews are typically designed to last 30 to 60 seconds by AAPC's definition and 20 to 30 seconds by CMOR's."

From the same article:

"Push questions" are widely used throughout the research industry, whereas push polling is not. Push questions -- as opposed to so-called "push polling" -- are recognized by all the major associations and leading political consultants as a valid and legitimate research tool for the purposes of testing ad messages and examining the collective viewpoints of electorate subgroups.

Political analyst Charlie Cook recently observed that "'Push questions' are asked containing attacks on the candidate sponsoring the poll, to test how vulnerable that candidate may be against anticipated attacks from the other party. These are not only legitimate tools of survey research, but any political pollster who did not use them would be doing their clients a real disservice."

I wonder... (0.00 / 0)
Adam, would it be a good idea for Lamont to conduct his own push polls? Would you support (or at least not condemn) such a move?

[ Parent ]
Depends on the definition, doesn't it? (0.00 / 0)
Under the narrower definition that I've used, no.  Under the broad definition y'all seem to be using, what would the problem be of asking voters "Do you believe Sen. Lieberman has sided with the President and against other Democrats too often, an appropriate amount, or not enough?"

[ Parent ]
Evading the Issue (4.00 / 2)
Joe's poll is designed to mislead and persuade - plain and simple - they hang up on anybody who isn't going to be swayed.

What's the evidence for this?

Adam B, Practice what you preach (0.00 / 0)
Adam B's mantra for the past year has been that we should not waist our time running against a Dem, but instead use or time and energy to defeat republicans. However, it seems to me that Adam B has spend a hell of alot of his time defending Lieberman to the point of absurdity (Read this thread for proof) Adam B seems to have a full time job Defending Lieberman here as well as DailyKos. When does he have time to do work defeating Republicans? Adam B would rather spend his time defending Liebermans PUSH-POLLING.

But you know what, I'm an idiot too. Iv'e been suckered into engaging Adam instead of using my time to help Ned get elected. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm done arguing with Adam B about Lieberman and I would like to ask Adam B to not only write here to defend Lieberman, but please tell us about all the things he is doing to help Democrats take back the house and Senate. How about it Adam?

look (0.00 / 0)
I am no longer defending Lieberman.  The race is on, regardless of whether it was a wise decision, and the people of CT can decide this.

My political time is spent helping Patrick Murphy (PA-8).  I'm barely posting about this race.

Thats great (0.00 / 0)
Tell Us about Pat Murphy. This is the first Iv'e heard of him from you. (Not saying you haven't posted about him, just that I haven't seen any posts from you about him) Where does he stand on the issues? What do you like about him? Can he benefit from your involvement in the netroots. What can we here at MLN  do to help him win his district?

[ Parent ]
this isn't the place for that (non-CT) (4.00 / 1)

One good thing I will say about ya Adam.. (0.00 / 0)
You are one determined and loyal supporter. You might not agree with us about Lieberman, but I'm sure glad your a Democrat.

Adam B's practicing (0.00 / 0)
You might not agree with some of Adam's comments here, but there is NO question that he practices what he preaches.  Adam does countless hours of pro bono work on internet freedom of speech issues.  He also writes great front page posts like this at DailyKos and elsewhere.

It's not like he trolls all day at MLN.  And he's not the only commenter to suggest that this might not be correctly termed a "push poll", however sleazy the information in it may be.
