Finch aide drops title of Deputy Mayor for Education

Cross post from Jon Pelto's Wait What?

Earlier this month, if you had visited the Council of Urban Professionals' website you would have read that, "Joshua Thompson is the Director of Education and Youth Policy and the Deputy Mayor for Education for the city of Bridgeport, CT.  Prior to this position, he was the Program Analyst and Projects Manager for the Deputy Mayor for Education in the Executive Office of the Mayor in Washington, DC."

If you made that same cyber journey today you'd find Joshua Thompson's official profile reads, "Joshua Thompson is the Director of Education and Youth Policy/Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for the city of Bridgeport, CT. Prior to this position, he was the Program Analyst and Projects Manager for the Deputy Mayor for Education in the Executive Office of the Mayor in Washington, DC."

Gone is the reference to his claim that he is the "Deputy Mayor for Education for the City of Bridgeport."

Normally when someone is caught padding their resume, there is usually a fair amount of media coverage and the individual is usually reprimanded, or worse, fired.

In this case, no Connecticut media, including the CT Post, saw fit to even mention the fact that a mayoral aide was passing himself off as the Deputy Mayor of Bridgeport, a position, by the way, that doesn't even exist.  And as far as we know, no reprimand was forthcoming and as of today, Thompson has remained gainfully employed and is collecting his $125,000 plus in publicly funded salary and benefits.

According to the CT Post, the Board of Education was "originally told Thompson's salary and benefits were coming out of the district [school] budget. Now, they have been told it is coming out of the city's Lighthouse afterschool budget."

In any case, Finch's "education enforcer" is being paid for with funds that should be going to enhance Bridgeport's education system.  Instead, if the CT Post report is correct, Thompson is taking money that was meant for "a state of the art after school educational and recreational program in partnership with our community based organizations and the Bridgeport public schools... "

The program seeks "to provide a safe environment that compliments school day learning and fosters intellectual, cultural, physical, social and emotional development of children by partnering with and supporting the efforts of family, school and community. Children, youth and adults will be provided with opportunities to become independent lifetime learners as well as innovative, creative, and productive citizens." (See http://www.thelighthouseprogra...

Instead, some of that money is being diverted to the guy who was advertising himself as the Deputy Mayor of Bridgeport.

Any readers who need a fresher on Finch and Thompson are urged to check the previous Wait, What? blog posts entitled, Bridgeport: Finch puts Deputy Mayor Thompson in attack mode to protect Paul Vallas..., And last but not least, in Finch/Vallas land... and Mayor Finch and Bridgeport City Council move to cut education funding?

As an aside, Thompson is the one who Finch sent out to trash the members of the Board of Education who opposed the illegal contract to Acting Superintendent Paul Vallas.  At the time, Thompson issued a statement to the Only in Bridgeport blog stating,  "I want to make something 100-percent clear...I am very concerned that we have elected board members whose values are tied to that of the Working Families Party.... With Superintendent Vallas' evaluation coming up this Monday, it is clear that anyone who is part of the Working Families Party did not objectively evaluate the Superintendent's performance..."
