Nancy Johnson Fundraisers May Have Violated Law

by: BranfordBoy

Sat Jun 03, 2006 at 17:09:00 PM EDT

A letter soliciting for a hospital-sponsored fundraiser for Nancy Johnson may have violated the law, reports The Corner Report.

The letter may have violated several federal election laws: While a for profit corporation may hold fundraisers for politicians, they are prohibited from making donations as a corporate entity unless they register as a political action committee. A corporate PAC would be allowed to solicit campaign donations only from executives and stockholders, and a solicitation letter must include a statement that employees will not be punished if they don’t participate.

Republicans in our state seem to hold little regard for campaign finance law. Perhaps Johnson was just following the example of Jodi Rell and staff who also broke the law to solicit donations.

To Doug Richardson (visitor making comment expressing skepticism over the issue), there is definitely a problem, and it's with the campaign as well as the hospital. First, the campaign's fundraising staff should have known better than to get involved in the first place. Clearly this fundraiser was being promoted as a Sharon Hospital event, even if the letters had been printed on Charles Therrien's letterhead. Businesses are prohibited from making campaign contributions or holding fundraisers, except through a corporate PAC. However, even if this event had been run through a Sharon Hospital PAC, they would be prohibited from working in coordination with the official campaign. There are many gray areas in the FEC regulations, but the issues in question here are all black & white. Bottom line, Johnson screwed up, canceled the event, and made a lame excuse about scheduling cinflicts instead of just admitting to the transgression. Unfortunately, the leaders of Ms. Johnsons' party, including President Bush and Governor Rell have sent the message that elected officials are above the law. These politicians will soon get a harsh reminder that that they are accountable to the people that elected them - the same people that will throw them out on their asses come November.
