Does John Olsen have short term memory loss?

by: ctblogger

Mon Aug 20, 2012 at 14:25:22 PM EDT

AFL-CIO President John Olsen, CTNJ today:

AFL-CIO President John Olsen told WDRC Host Brad Davis that he plans on calling House Speaker Chris Donovan Monday and asking him to get out of the race.

[...]

Olsen said he thinks it's not realistic for labor, which makes up a large segment of the Democratic party in Connecticut, to wait for somebody who is "pure" and will vote in favor of their agenda all of the time.

Olsen is advocating for party unity? That's not the same Olsen I remember from 2006...
Olsen has worked hard behind the scenes to deliver the endorsement for Lieberman.

[...]

Olsen said that the federation, if it endorses Lieberman, would stick with him even if he loses the primary and runs against the Democrats as an independent in November. "We endorse individuals," he said. "We don't endorse the party."

Although Lamont won the primary and Olsen faced mounting pressure to think about party over loyalty, Olsen opted to sit our the general and not hurt Lieberman's feelings as opposed to embracing the whole party unity theme at the time.

You can't have it both ways John, and it's hypocritical for you to tell unions members to get behind an individual who has been openly hostile towards those in the labor movement.

Elizabeth Esty, a lawyer and mother of three turned state legislator from Cheshire, called to say she'd had it.
[...]

I grabbed my notebook and headed over to the Capitol, hoping to catch her before she recovered her party-approved talking points.

"The center is not being heard," Esty told me, launching into a lengthy list, from intractable unions to a misguided sick leave proposal and tax cuts for the wealthy. "What is happening in politics such that neither party is producing and supporting moderates?"

How so? She hears business leaders complain about how difficult this state can be, then watches fellow Democrats push for new mandates, such as state-imposed sick time rules...

If it was okay for Olsen to vote his conscious in 2006, why isn't okay for labor to vote their conscious in 2012?

...it's not like the rank and file union members  haven't ignored Olsen in the past, turned their backs on the primary victor and assisted in the spoiler role before.

Olsen could not have "Stuck with Joe" in 2006.... (0.00 / 0)
I remember the guy going off at a CT Opposes the War rally in March of 2006:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

No way he could be that passionate against George Bush's elective war, and then supported Lieberpuke. Morally incongruous...

I love it when people pull my old clips (0.00 / 0)
Makes me feel that I was doing something right back in those days...BTW: It was FREEZING on that day.

Yes, Olsen could have stuck with Lieberman in 2006 (0.00 / 0)
Olsen is part of the "good old boys" network and hypocrisy is not foreign to these folks, so yes, Olsen in 2006 did decry the war and support Lieberman at the same time.  Olsen never bothered to support Lamont in the general election.

I don't understand this. Are you saying Olsen (though I'm sure he has his own personal agenda) should support Donovan no matter what? Just what CT needs another politician who at worst is corrupt (business as usual?) or at best is too stupid to know his staff is. And before the bashing begins I don't vote in the 5th, I am a registered Dem, and I have been a member of a "Working Family" all of my life though I probably don't qualify in your eyes as no member of my family has ever carried a union card.

My point... (0.00 / 0)
...is that it's hypocritical for Olsen to demand for "party unity" when he bailed on the party for Lieberman back in 06.

This is no longer about Donovan, it's about union members throwing support behind someone they believe does not share their values or concerns. Same thing happened in '92 when Olsen called for members to rally behind Lawlor, someone that many in the union believed didn't share their concerns. In the end, although the vote was close, they decided not to endorse Lawlor.

Many believe that Esty makes Lawlor look like a saint.
