Komen foundation restores funding to Planned Parenthood

by: ctblogger

Fri Feb 03, 2012 at 11:47:18 AM EST

Faced with mounting criticism, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation restored Planned Parenthood funding for breast cancer screening.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure said today it was retreating from a decision to cut funding to Planned Parenthood, which provides abortion and birth control services, and apologized for a move that thrust the world's largest breast cancer charity into a deeply politicized controversy.

"We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities," Komen said in a statement.

It's too bad that this situation happened in the first place as politics has NO business in breast cancer screening for those in need.

NOTE: The Connecticut branch of Komen did the right thing and never pulled it's funding to Planned Parenthood.

UPDATE (12:40 PM): Senator Richard Blumenthal released the following...

"This decision is a resounding victory for women's health care. Komen's reversal is a response to an overwhelming outpouring of support for women's health - which I was proud to be a part of. I applaud this decision to reconsider this damaging policy and restore Komen's partnership with Planned Parenthood, a trusted and effective provider of health services for millions of women across the country. Now more than ever, we must resist and reject baseless, ideological attacks on women's health care from extreme, right wing political groups. I look forward to continuing to work to ensure that every woman, regardless of income, has access to the vital health services she deserves. "

UPDATE: Congressman Chris Murphy had this to say...

I applaud @KomenCT for continuing to honor their commitment to #PlannedParenthood: http://bit.ly/Ad9gwE #rightthingtodo

Dem. 5th Dist. Congressional candidate Elizabeth Esty released the following:
"I am very pleased that the Komen Foundation has reversed its decision and will continue to allow Planned Parenthood to apply for grants to provide vital health services for women. The public attention to this matter underscores the importance of women's health and the broad public support for ensuing that women's healthcare is affordable and accessible. It is also a solemn reminder that we must stand together in the fight and a testament to the strength and depth of support for these crucial rights."

I think the headlines may be a bit misleading, (4.00 / 1)
both here and in some of the media, since they only announced that Planned Parenthood COULD apply and qualify for funding... Not that they would be sure to get the money for breast cancer screenings restored.

Kaili Joy Gray dissected the announcement a little:

We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair. [...] Amending our criteria will ensure that politics has no place in our grant process. We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities.

What does that mean? Does that mean the foundation will not defund Planned Parenthood based on its new criteria? That isn't clear. After all, Brinker was already claiming yesterday that it would honor those grants already issued to Planned Parenthood. That was never the problem. The problem was determining that it would not give any future grants, based on its new "criteria." Does this mean Komen will continue to fund Planned Parenthood? If it does, why doesn't Brinker state that explicitly, so there is no confusion?

May turn out to be nitpicking a little in the dissection but... Gotta keep one eye open when we are dealing with a small slice of American wingnuts that want to crush Planned Parenthood.

I am just waiting for that criminal and fraud, James O'Keefe, to fake a video on them like he did with Acorn.

The reason this became "news" was that they refused the grant funding. They didn't stop PRIOR grants, and they didn't say that they would refuse all future grants. They stopped the latest grant request.

The PR spin was...

1) we didn't stop current grants
2) they can apply for future grants.

NOTHING changed.

This will be taught at Harvard Business School as how to tarnish a multi-million dollar brand.

I know that a number of people I know if will be "racing for a cure" with T-shirts pleading for direct support for Planned Parenthood and with donations going directly to PP.

It took a great deal to give the pink ribbon a black eye, and today's PR stunts will not undo the damage.

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.
