NYTimes to Maturo: Resign!

by: ctblogger

Fri Jan 27, 2012 at 09:18:18 AM EST

Amen!

Hispanic residents and civil-rights advocates have raised alarms for years about the police in East Haven, Conn. Their claims gained chilling corroboration on Tuesday. The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested a sergeant and three officers on charges of terrorizing the town's Hispanic neighborhoods, stopping and detaining people, searching businesses without cause, beating people in handcuffs, smashing a man's head into a wall.

The charges echoed what the Justice Department reported in December, accusing East Haven police of widespread "biased policing, unconstitutional searches and seizures and the use of excessive force." This was made more appalling when the mayor, Joseph Maturo Jr., was asked by a reporter how he would respond to the arrests and said that he might have tacos for dinner. First, he said he was joking. When it dawned on him that snide flippancy was the wrong response to grave accusations of police brutality, he said he was sorry for his "off-collar comment."

That is not enough. Mayor Maturo should now resign. He has shown a stunning incapacity for understanding the severity of the scandal in his government and has been fatally compromised by his knee-jerk support for the tainted police department and its chief. The mayor's repugnant remark is the least of it. This case is about institutional brutality and oppression.

Maturo, the writing is on the wall...it's time to go.

Why is there no discussion of this controversy on WNPR? (0.00 / 0)
Shouldn't public broadcasting for our state engage in debate and coverage of this burning issue?  Why not bring on community leaders to talk about it?  Call in?

When even the NYT is writing editorials about this issue, why do we hear nothing from CT public radio?

To WNPR's defense (somewhat) (0.00 / 0)
Colin talked about the Taco comment on his show...

...but I think people are missing the point about East Haven as it's really not about the mayor's boneheaded remark but the disgusting level of discrimination directed towards Ecuadorians FOR YEARS in the city.

Do Tell (0.00 / 0)
.
That's a really curious observation. What could have happened there that such a finely targeted type of discrimination would exist?

Please tell us more, Al. And I'd rather hear it from you than that radio station any day...

Huh? (0.00 / 0)
I've been talking about this very topic for the last SEVEN YEARS (check my Danbury site HatCityBLOG)...the problem is that people don't care unless it directly effects them or when something outrageous happens.

sad but true...

OK (0.00 / 0)
.
Sorry I just don't have any knowledge of why this is going on. I would read any links you suggest to get caught up. I never had any reason to be in East Haven as the fates would have it, but Danbury has been a part of my life since the hat factories still stood.

So why aren't you a regular commentator on public broadcasting? (0.00 / 0)
You know what's going on, and you're not afraid to say it.  Why haven't you been invited on WNPR's Where We Live to talk about this?

Very surprised to hear that McEnroe (sp?) discussed this.  The usual fare on that program is as content-less as can be.  Lost me when he devoted an entire hour to toilets.

You highlighted the priest's harassment when he tried to videotape the police roughing up Hispanics.  Kudos to you.

We should be trying to find out what's going on with chronic discrimination against Ecuadorians in that part of the state.  Let us know, and let's let CT public broadcasting know that shining the spotlight on this sort of problem in our state is exactly what public broadcasting is supposed to do.

The real problem is that people don't care (0.00 / 0)
Immigrant rights supporters have long complained about the mayor in East Haven (and Danbury) for years and these concerns in both communities have been well documented in the New Haven Independent, alternative media (New Haven/Fairfield Weekly, immigrant papers, etc) as well as here and my local blog in Danbury (HatCityBLOG)...and on a personal note, I've had my life threatened several times by anti-immigrant hate groups who didn't like me exposing their hatred.

In my opinion, people turn a blind eye to discrimination towards the immigrant community until something big happens such as the boneheaded remark by East Haven's mayor, or in the case in Danbury where it was revealed that several elected officials were forwarding highly offensive emails targeting immigrants.

Immigrants in the state have long complained about the problems in the state (since at least 2004) yet it seems like no one cares and unfortunately in the case in East Haven, I have little faith that anything will change once the media packs up and leaves town.

So sorry to hear about the threats. Horrible (0.00 / 0)
When the media "leave town" should mean the New York Times or the like.  Public broadcasting, which isn't tied in with anti-immigrant Fox News/Newscorp, is supposed to not leave town.  It's Connecticut based.  And it is supposed to offer a view that the corporate press won't.

Isn't this another example of how that organization is letting down the state?

At least on this site, we're grateful to you for your courage and intrepid and detailed reporting on so many subjects.

Thank you.
