NY Times op ed: What Happened to Obama?

What Happened to Obama?
SNIP

THE real conundrum is why the president seems so compelled to take both sides of every issue, encouraging voters to project whatever they want on him, and hoping they won't realize which hand is holding the rabbit. That a large section of the country views him as a socialist while many in his own party are concluding that he does not share their values speaks volumes - but not the volumes his advisers are selling: that if you make both the right and left mad, you must be doing something right.

SNIP

The most charitable explanation is that he and his advisers have succumbed to a view of electoral success to which many Democrats succumb - that "centrist" voters like "centrist" politicians. Unfortunately, reality is more complicated. Centrist voters prefer honest politicians who help them solve their problems. A second possibility is that he is simply not up to the task by virtue of his lack of experience and a character defect that might not have been so debilitating at some other time in history. Those of us who were bewitched by his eloquence on the campaign trail chose to ignore some disquieting aspects of his biography: that he had accomplished very little before he ran for president, having never run a business or a state; that he had a singularly unremarkable career as a law professor, publishing nothing in 12 years at the University of Chicago other than an autobiography; and that, before joining the United States Senate, he had voted "present" (instead of "yea" or "nay") 130 times, sometimes dodging difficult issues.

A somewhat less charitable explanation is that we are a nation that is being held hostage not just by an extremist Republican Party but also by a president who either does not know what he believes or is willing to take whatever position he thinks will lead to his re-election. Perhaps those of us who were so enthralled with the magnificent story he told in "Dreams From My Father" appended a chapter at the end that wasn't there - the chapter in which he resolves his identity and comes to know who he is and what he believes in.

Or perhaps, like so many politicians who come to Washington, he has already been consciously or unconsciously corrupted by a system that tests the souls even of people of tremendous integrity, by forcing them to dial for dollars - in the case of the modern presidency, for hundreds of millions of dollars...

SNIP

Just like Malloy, Obama and his staff don't like to be criticized for their poor leadership.  But this critique is dead on.

Westen is right when he concludes that contrary to the Washington Beltway mentaility, "Centrist" voters actually want honest leaders who can solve their problems.

Obama is acting like he is...a law professor trained to be " objective" (0.00 / 0)
One of  the regular responders in here  taught me  law  in  law school..John  Kantrowitz...he  hopefully  would  agree  with the  point  that  many if not most law  professors and their  students  seem  to  look at  problems  and  are prepared  to argue  any and all sides  of  the problem, without taking a personal  position. It might be  that  Obama  was  very  socialized in law school and beyond  to  do  the same intelletual argueing  and isnt of a mind  to take  only  one  side of  an issue at  first blush. It might be  that Obama hedges his  core values in the  pursuit of  " real politik" knowing  that  his  tactic  will look better  then  those of  his main  opponents (  the tea party  republicans)..at least  the relevant polls  seem  to  indicate such.In that event,  the  posturing by  Obama as  " non-partisan"  etc  etc  seems more a  re-election  strategy  then  a lack of convictions.I  continue  to believe  that  Obama  is neither left nor  right on most issues, but not all issues,  but is a  "factist"...taking  the  facts, weighing them, testing them,  and sifting  them  to  cobble  positions  together to  afford him  the most  leverage  he believes  that he can attain  either in legislation  and/or  on the  re-election  campaign.

On another note, I  agree  that  most  voters  are  centrist and like  centrist answers to  complex  issues, but  are  willing  to accept a  progressive  answer  if  it seems  reasonable  and  works...visualize FDR  for instance....

On the one hand I agree with Bruce, (0.00 / 0)
but on the other hand I can see where he is totally wrong.

While many legal issues are close calls, with good arguments on both sides which need to be carefully weighed, the political issues faced by President Obama are, to any moderate to progressive Democrat, clear-cut.

Obama came into office thinking he could compromise and negotiate his way through any problem - but this hasn't worked with an opposition unwilling to do either.

Moreover, his advisors, particularly on economic issues, are (how to put this politely?) stupid, ignorant, selfish, Wall Street types.

There is no centrist position on unemployment and the economy. Either you think there the overriding problems in America today, or you are a right-wing fool.

Yes Social Security, Medicare and the deficit are problems long-term, but they are easily solved by raising taxes and cutting Defense spending - and  these aren't law professor type problems either.

I agree,mostly (0.00 / 0)
John   I  dont  think  that  Obama  thinks like us.We( most progressives) believe  that the main problem of  a stagnant economy and lack  of jobs  is  to create  more  "demand"  via  taxes on those  making 250k  and another stimulas package...hopefully  to create  jobs  in some  sort of WPA..revamped  for  2012.Progressives  might also  want  to have a  payroll tax  cut for employees and  small business employers and  an increased  unemployment  for say  26 additional weeks. Obama  sitting in the WHite House  would love  to "act like a progressive" but is very beholden  to wall street and hedge fund types and  some  corporate CEO's  also  and must  or  rather  will  "balance"  the overall support  within  his  party  to get  where he needs  to go.John, his economic  advisors  were  or are  cut  from the same cloth as  his wall street, hedge fund and  corporate support...their motto  is.." give  the natives  just  enough  crumbs, so  they  dont  revolt"

Social secuirty and medicare  are easilly fixable  with  MINOR  reforms...

The problem is the lack of information and free media (0.00 / 0)
most  voters  are  centrist and like  centrist answers to  complex  issues, but  are  willing  to accept a  progressive  answer  if  it seems  reasonable  and  works.

They are centrist only because we are being told that and they only see what little big media tells them.

But even still, polls show most want to protect Social Security and fairly tax the rich etc. In many ways the population is left of center, despite being left without the full story.

because Connecticut voters count: http://www.CTVotersCount.org

yes  most  citizens  who like us  want  to protect social security and tax  the rich more ..and believe in a  WPA  type of  stimulas   would be at the least subjectively  "left" of  center if not objectively   "left" of  center.

West Wing moment (0.00 / 0)
I keep waiting for a moment such as the one in one of the first West Wing episodes where Jed Bartlett says "America doesn't think we've done a very good job these first two years and frankly they're right. Let's start acting like we know what we're doing."
