An Open Letter to Linda McMahon

Dear Linda,

I guess your campaign has been looking at the poll crosstabs and realized that you have a problem with women. A BIG problem. Women don't approve of you. And they could lose you this $50 million dollar bet you've placed.

So you've just come out with this really sweet ad featuring your daughter, Stephanie:

Aw. It's that so...heartwarming. Really. I'm sure you and Stephanie have a wonderful mother daughter relationship and you are a fantastic grandmother. Mazel Tov to you and Vince on your lovely family.

But seriously Linda - you must not understand women, or you must think we're stupid. Very, very, very stupid. And I'll tell you something that all your high priced political consultants have neglected to tell you, and what's more, I'm going to give you this info for FREE! Yes, you don't have to give me any money, because I know you're getting close to your budget of $50 million, and being a budget conscious woman myself I'm sure you don't want to go over your limit.

So here's my insight, free of charge. Women don't like people who treat us like we're stupid.

'Cause here's the thing. I'm a mom myself, Linda.I have a 14 year-old daughter, who has been one of the lights of my life since the day she was born. And one of the most important things I try to do for my daughter is to be a good role model of a strong, independent woman, and to protect her and fight so that she doesn't ever have to suffer from sexual abuse or sexual harassment, so that she gets equal pay for doing the same job as a man.

One thing I would NEVER do with my daughter Linda, is to put her in a wrestling ring with a guy rubbing his ass in her face or ripping her shirt off for my profit, even if it is only "scripted entertainment".

And while I appreciate that the WWE has tried to clean up its act in recent years (did you know you were thinking of running for Senate?) your past record is a vile stream of misogynistic content including simulated necrophilia and rape.

While you call this "scripted entertainment", I say that creating a culture like this has consequences. Real consequences that affect women in the real world. Women like me. Women like my daughter. Women like my neighbors and their daughters, and my friends and their daughters. Maybe you should read my recent column about the events that took place recently at Yale

And here's the other thing, Linda. You say you want to cut taxes, balance the budget and cut spending. You're very detailed about cutting taxes, but don't want to talk about where you're going to cut spending until after the election. We're not stupid. We know exactly where you're going to cut. From the programs that matter to us most. The reason you don't want to articulate this before the election is because you're afraid we won't vote for you.

You're right.

We won't. Because we're not that stupid.

She's been visibly softening in her ads (0.00 / 0)
But it's too much smarm way too late.  The "single mother holding my hand with tears in her eyes asking me for a brighter future" one is especially insulting & cliche.

C'mon Linda.  D'ya really think we're going to buy that now?

Apparently she or her handlers thought we'd all buy alotta nonsense in her campaign without question because she made big money & wears a skirt.  (Like giving Blumie shit over an incorrect preposition.) They missed that big pink Momma elephant in the room...and she is not amused (or "entertained").

Doesn't she realize (0.00 / 0)
that most mothers actively kept their children (daughters and sons both) away from watching McMahon's violent, misogynistic, ignorant trashtainment?

Frank Luntz did a focus group on this year's political ads (0.00 / 0)
and talks in a piece in today's Time magazine about Linda's expensive AdFail.

Rule No. 5: Fake doesn't sell. Connecticut GOP Senate candidate Linda McMahon  spent more than $40 million of her own money, much of it on ads that often did her more harm than good. The most memorable featured two chatty women in a car talking about McMahon's job-creation capabilities. When one asked whether the other thought McMahon could shake things up in Washington, the two chirped in confected unison, "Oh, yeah." The response from viewers: Oh, no. No actors. Ever.

So while "scripted entertainment" might have made Linda and Vince a fortune in the wrestling ring, it's not working so well in the political area. Because believe it or not, this is real life, affecting actual people, not infotainment.

How Much WWF must you watch? (0.00 / 0)
I cannot imagine how much wwf someone here had to watch to get these clips. You do know that watching that many hours of trash television will fry your brain?

Truly a pyrric approach!

Actually, I didn't have to watch any (0.00 / 0)
You Tube helpfully suggested I watch Stephanie's most embarrassing moments after I watched the Linda advertisement.

Believe me, I have too many books I don't get to read to spend time watching WWE.

I was a pretty big WWF fan back in the day... (0.00 / 0)
... and I literally have no idea what Stephanie's referring to by "When I was young, my parents lost everything."  She was born as Vince (her father) became the leading figure in his father's wrestling company, which Vince took over when Stephanie was four (as chairman) and six (as controlling owner).  And of course he's led the company her entire life, including in the late-90s or so when Vince was rumored to be worth over $1 billion.

At one point they faced a serious suit over steroid use by the wrestlers, and at another point the WWF was in serious trouble financially, but those are both fights they won.  There's just no instance where the McMahon family "lost everything."*

* Unless you count in spring 1999, when Stone Cold Steve Austin became CEO before Vince and Shane (their son) won ownership back in a ladder match at King of the Ring.  Maybe that's what she's referring to?

I'm surprised (0.00 / 0)
That that success story isn't a bigger part of their campaign!
