CT SEN: Blumenthal leads by three among likely voters

Video stream of Q-Poll press conference via CTNewsJunkie

Today's poll from Quinnipiac shows Richard Blumenthal still leading Linda McSteroids...but his lead has shrunk by three points among likely voters (49-46 percent).

"With five weeks to go, the Connecticut Senate race is very close. Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is ahead by only a statistically insignificant 3 points. Blumenthal has to be concerned about Linda McMahon's momentum. He can hear her footsteps as she closes in on him," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, PhD.

"McMahon clearly is capitalizing on the anger that one-third of voters are feeling toward the federal government." Quinnipiac University Poll/September 28, 2010 - page 2

"But McMahon has to be concerned that voters are still divided on her," Dr. Schwartz added. "There continues to be a big gender gap, as we've seen in other states such a New York and Pennsylvania. Women are going with the Democrat and men are siding with the Republican.

"Usually debates don't make much of a difference, but in a race this close next month's debates could be a game changer."

While there is much to digest in this poll I'll just start by saying the thing that Democrats have said privately for weeks...Blumenthal is running a almost non-existent campaign.

The fact that a person with such high favorables is leading a moronic GOP candidate (whose favorables dropped three points since the last poll) by only 3 points speaks volumes about the type of campaign Blumenthal is running...an inept campaign that's too afraid to criticize an opponent who made her millions broadcasting sex and violence to children while turning a blind eye to the effect steroids had on her company.

And yeah, yeah, I know the Blumenthal campaign released their internal data that shows them up by 12 points and yeah, yeah, I read what Nate Silverand what First Read had to say but that's not the point. The fact of the matter is that Blumenthal is not campaigning hard enough and has allowed a candidate with NO credibility close the gap.

When asked about Blumenthal's ad campaign, a third of those polled said "not enough."

It's simple. With five weeks to go, Blumenthal has to roll up his sleeves and work for every vote...that includes taking his laughable joke of a Republican candidate head on.

What's your opinion on the state of Blumenthal's campaign?

I'll have more on the poll below the fold later...

It's really doubtful Connecticut voters are this stupid (0.00 / 0)
...to elect McMahon over Blumenthal, and for a variety of reasons.

Chief among them are that they just don't like her. She still has negative favorables (+43/-44), and nearly as many people who say they would support McMahon say their vote would be more against Blumenthal than for McMahon herself, the kind of "message-sending" support which is typically soft. From the poll two weeks ago only 39% said she had the right kind of experience to be a U.S. Senator.

So who are her key constituency?

The 33 percent of likely voters who say they are "angry" with the federal government support McMahon 78 - 20 percent.

Another interesting aspect that while both have fairly high numbers of viewers for their tv ads, McMahon swamps Blumenthal with mailers with over 2-1 saying they'd received some from McMahon. Over 50% of independents found them annoying rather than informative so while they may reached a saturation point they've also been at least somewhat effective in driving her message across.

Blumenthal's "morals" (4.00 / 1)
Here's what Blumenthal had to say when going after Craigslist's First Amendment rights:

"We're asking Craigslist to put people above the profits, and do the right thing voluntarily and change its business model, if necessary, which it has a moral if not legal obligation to do."

Here's Blumenthal on "doing the right thing" by revoking sleazeball Eddie Perez's pension:

"It's required by law that we bring the action."

And the poobahs in the Democratic party wonder why there's an "enthusiasm gap."

It bears repeating that the numbers from these polls (0.00 / 0)
...are predicated on some pretty awful turnout numbers from Democrats, much worse than in 1994. That's the assumption behind their likely voter models.

stay on message (0.00 / 0)
The Dems have to get the message out across the country that these self-funded, self-made, selfish millionaires/billionaires are running for one reason only - to preserve the gift that the GOP and Bush gave them.

The amount of money lost to the treasury from these tax cuts on their obscene INCOMES is NOT cutting into their piles of money.  This has been the GOP's focus since their existence - preservation of THEIR wealth and the Hell with everyone else.  "Let them eat cake."

The Dems have made attempts to right the ship that the GOP almost sunk but have been blocked at every turn by the GOP stonewalling, filibustering and just saying "NO".

Remind the people which party apologized to BP.  Remind them which party thinks oil companies and financial institutions will do just fine policing themselves.

Then point out that these Tea Party millionaires have publicly stated their desire to finally rid us of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Unemployment and every other social program that MOST people depend on in one way or another.

That should get out the vote and put an end to the madness of unknown uber-rich crawling out every November to protect their mansions, yachts, vacation homes, vaults, limousines, caviar, gold, ...
