Hurricane Earl 2010: Parts Of New York, Massachusetts Put On Notice

BUXTON, N.C. - Hurricane Earl blew toward the Eastern Seaboard on Thursday as a major storm (Category 4) with winds of around 145 mph as forecasters tried to pinpoint exactly how close the strongest gales and heaviest surge would get to North Carolina's fragile chain of barrier islands.

They also were trying to figure out whether the storm would stay offshore as it tracks up the Northeast coast or bring hurricane-force winds to Long Island, the Boston metropolitan area and Cape Cod.

The (Hurricane) center issued a tropical storm warning early Thursday for the coast of Long Island in New York and a hurricane watch was issued for areas of Massachusetts. A hurricane warning was already in effect for the coast of North Carolina.

Red Cross officials in New York prepared to open as many as 50 shelters on Long Island that could house up to 60,000 people in an emergency.

Emergency officials on Cape Cod braced for their first major storm since Hurricane Bob brought winds of up to 100 mph to coastal New England in August 1991.

MLN'rs on the coast, I hope Earl isn't a problem for you this holiday weekend, but be prepared.  CT Bob, what are you going to do with your boat?

After Earl passes, it's suppose to be a lovely weekend with highs in the mid 70's.

I was wondering (0.00 / 0)
Why Massachusetts and New York have both declared storm warnings but Connecticut has not...

Channel 3 just reporting "Tropical Storm Warning Issued For Coastline" (0.00 / 0)

Tropical Storm Warning Issued For Coastline
HARTFORD, Conn. -- A tropical storm warning has been issued for the Connecticut shoreline as Hurricane Earl approaches the East Coast.

The National Hurricane Center upgraded the tropical storm watch to a warning at about 11 a.m. Thursday.

Strong winds and rain were expected along the coast if Earl stays on its current path.

Channel 3 Early Warning Chief Meteorologist Bruce DePrest said the Category 4 hurricane will pass extremely close to the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Thursday night and take a turn toward New England.

DePrest said it looked as though the center of Hurricane Earl would be very close to Nantucket.

Conditions in Connecticut were expected to get worse as the day progresses on Friday and into Friday night. DePrest said that's when the state could see a few inches of rain and some strong winds that could gust to over 50 mph.

And don't forget to come up with an evacuation plan for your pets.  Most shelters will not take pets even if they take service animals.

Shelters do take service animals, pets are sheltered on same site in separate quarters (0.00 / 0)
To correct the previous poster, Red Cross Shelters ( and most towns have the red cross run their people shelters) permit service animals in the people shelter.  By Federal Law passed after Katrina, all Towns are required to have a pet shelter, generally but not always, on the same site as the Town's people shelter but in a separate room or building.  Pet owners are responsible for the care and feeding of their pets.  Animal Shelter managers appreciate when the owner brings the pet in their own cage or enclosure but the town will provide some cages for the animals.  The animal shelter is for dogs and cats but not for exotic pets such as snakes, allligators, fish, etc.
