CT-Sen 2012: The battle officially begins -- Dean to AFL-CIO: Lieberman 'sold you out' on health ca

Dean to AFL-CIO: Lieberman 'sold you out' on health care
Howard Dean, the former Democratic national chairman, blamed Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman today for the failure of the U.S. Senate to open Medicare to younger Americans as part of the health-care reform act passed by Congress.

"Remember who sold you out on health care," Dean told the Connecticut AFL-CIO at its biennial political convention in Hartford. "We're not going to forget in 2012."

"No, we're not," someone yelled from the crowd.

Lieberman, who was re-elected as an independent but remains a member of the Democratic caucus, has not said if he will seek re-election to a fifth term in 2012.

Dean, the former presidential candidate and Vermont governor, said Lieberman blocked a provision that would have allowed Americans younger than 65 to buy into Medicare.

SNIP

The battle for CT-Sen 2012 has begun.  Will be interesting to see who decides to challenge Lieberman, if he decides to run for re-election.

2012 vs. Joementum (0.00 / 0)
The smart money says Chris Murphy.  I bet Susan B. wants to run but I don't think the stink of her recent problems will have worn off by then. Ned Lamont is also collecting a heavy dose of loser stink but he could re-hab himself with what he does for the Dem ticket this year.

Dark horses - Don Williams, Rosa Delauro.

Agreed...In Part (0.00 / 0)
Murphy is in, unless he loses in the fall.  Caligiuri may appear to be easy game, but he's a hard-nosed campaigner and is capable of surprising all of us if not taken seriously.  If Murph loses, then it's open-season (see dark horses below).

The outgoing Secretary of State is toast.  She's loved by the party insiders, but she's giving up her base (by virtue of not running for re-election) and I wonder how many times she can stick her finger in the dam before it bursts completely.

Lamont is likely done, but he does have money and he does have a following.  If done right, as you suggest Mr. Marko, he could rehab himself into a formidable opponent -- by itself, the emotional tidal wave of 2006 requires him to be in the conversation.

DeLauro is sitting pretty in the House and (I think) it would be a shocking development if she were to run for Senate.  I also wonder if she has the "fire in the belly" to be U.S. Senator?

Williams is boring and if Malloy wins he'll be tossed from leadership.

Other dark horses?

I'm hearing Gary Collins (former candidate for Congress in the 2nd CD, founder of the Collins Foundation and attorney at GE) is thinking about running.  I also think someone like William Tong, who was part of the final 4 for U.S. Attorney, is a real possibility -- young, ambitious, great resume, smart and has an interesting story to tell.  Also in that category is Gary Holder-Winfield, but I think he wants a shot at DeStefano first.

Merrick Alpert? (0.00 / 0)
Did he make enough of an ass of himself to be counted out?

One thing better not happen (0.00 / 0)
Let's all hope, if not assume, that Barack Obama will not set foot in the state of Connecticut to support Joe Lieberman.  I think that, were he to come to campaign for him, it might just be enough for me not to vote for Obama for president again.

It would be that insulting.

he'll be pretty busy in 2012 (0.00 / 0)
hopefully this won't be an issue

Who wants Howard to move to CT and run for Senate? (4.00 / 1)
Raise your hand!

How about... (4.00 / 1)

for President in 2012, challenging Obama.

No, Howard said that he's done with running for President (0.00 / 0)
but Gov. Rendell said that if we are still engaged in a bad war by 2012, Obama could face a primary challenge.

No Worries There (0.00 / 0)
Obama will be sure to withdraw a few troops and then wave his magic wand over the remaining troops in Afghanistan by election season in 2012 turning them from "combat troops" into "training and assistance troops" just like he did in Iraq. That's assuming that he hasn't given Israel the nod of approval to attack Iran, in which case, all of our troops will magically morph back into combat troops.

At least it makes for good TV news ratings!!

Ugh (0.00 / 0)
I don't know much about Rendell's record as governor, but whenever I see him on TV he strikes me as the prototypical clueless blowhard.

Now Brian Schweitzer, there's a governor I can get behind.

Dean...Seriously? (0.00 / 0)
Is there no one in CT that you'd support for Senate?  Instead you want a borderline one-shot wonder to move to CT to run?  Is there no one in the above list that you find palatable?

Sometimes I just shake my head and wonder.....

My political heros are Gov. Howard Dean, Gov. Brian Schweitzer, Rep. Alan Grayson (0.00 / 0)
They're my heroes because they don't wimp out in the face of Right wing attacks.  I'll disagree with Grayson over the Israel/Palestinian issue, but he's got my full support when it comes to beating back the bullies from the Right.

It was rather tongue in cheek. (0.00 / 0)
