Dennis House: Malloy v. Lamont Most Watched Debate of the Season

Malloy v. Lamont Most Watched Debate of the Season
SNIP

In an effort to try something new, we went with a 3PM time slot, which historically means the audience was likely made up of more women than men.

August is a tough time for television because many folks are at the beach, on vacation, or doing something else than sitting on the couch.

The debate was the second most watched program from 3 to 4PM, beaten only by General Hospital.    It was the most watched debate of the primary season, but hardly a ratings blockbuster.   The debate was on par with the ratings for "Better Connecticut," which was pre-empted for two days for the debates.

General Hospital

WTNH

3.3 rating

Lamont vs Malloy Debate

WFSB

2.1 rating

Judge Brown

WCTX

1.4 rating

Tyra Banks

WCCT

1.4 rating

Ellen

WVIT

.7 rating

Wilkos

WTIC

.7 rating

Combined with the CPTV airing of the debate at 8PM, the debate got a total rating of 2.7.
SNIP

The NBC30 debate got a 2 share at the 7-8PM time slot, so the WFSB debate scored much better in the 3PM time slot, but overall, did slightly better than the NBC30 debate.  As Dennis said, these ratings are not a blockbuster.

It will be interesting to see what happens on Primary Day.

We are pre-empting Better Connecticut at 3PM to air the debates which will be simulcast on WNPR.    The debates will also be broadcast on CPTV at 8PM and simulcast again.  The debate can also been seen on wfsb.com

We should point out television stations do not produce these debates to get ratings.   They are a public service, provided to the viewers and voters so they can learn about the candidates they will vote for.    This is a very important election. We invite you to tune in and I guarantee it will have a greater impact on your life and be far more interesting than a re-run of "Two and a Half Men."

Sadly, more people watched that the other night than the debate.

Spend a few bucks and get a real format and you might get a few more voters.

I like Ellen (0.00 / 0)
Sorry to see Ellen so low in the ratings.

Larkspur.  Do you think people who normally watch Tyra switched to the debate or did they switch from Judge Brown.

Are any of you old enough to remember when Rick Springfield was on this General Hospital? Wow. Memories.

I think most of the audience were the normal audience of "Better Connecticut" (0.00 / 0)
some people don't change the channel and since the primary is next week some may have decided to watch so they can say they were informed.

So you remember Rick Springfield? (0.00 / 0)

Things of note (4.00 / 1)
1. House did not give the breakdown of the rating for the entire hour (e.g., how many people thought they were tuning into Better Connecticut and bolted after 15 miins)?

2. Where's the breakdown of the 8PM broadcast on CPTV. Clearly the audience for the 8-9 PM timeslot is larger than the 3-4 timeslot so where's that data?

3. I'd like to see a comparison of the 8PM braodcast of the debate along side the other debates that were shown in primetime.

It's not fair to compare a show that comes on during the afternoon with a show that comes on during prime time...especially when the show in question was re-broadcasted during the primetime period (and the details of those ratings were not released by House in his blog posting).

When was the last time anyone compared the ratings to "Better Connecticut (3-4 PM)" with Jeopardy (7-8)? Well, that's exactly what House is doing in comparing a debate that came on at 3PM with a debate that came on at 7PM...especially when you take into consideration the very strong possibility that most people probably tuned to channel 3 looking for "Better Connecticut," saw the debate, and turned the channel within 15 mins.

If the number of people who watched would have made House (0.00 / 0)
look good he would have reported the number instead of the "Share" Bullshit.

I cant find an actual number of people who watched anywhere, can you?

I'm going to contact Dennis House... (4.00 / 1)
...and ask him to provide the complete breakdown of the ratings for 3 and 7PM. What's critical is the dropoff of viewership...I'd like to match up the drop off between the 3 PM show and the 7 PM broadcast and compare it to the other debates.

The information House provided is incomplete and somewhat misleading.
