The Register Citizen endorses Ned Lamont

EDITORIAL: Endorsement: Ned Lamont for governor
In the Aug. 10 Democratic primary for governor, we endorse Ned Lamont.

Connecticut has developed a reputation for being one of the worst states in the country for operating a business. We have among the highest taxes in the country, the second-highest electricity costs, burdensome regulations and red tape. And we have a "culture" in the Legislature and in state agencies that is at the least unhelpful and non-responsive, and at the worst, openly hostile, to the operators of small businesses and big businesses alike.

Ned Lamont is a successful businessman. In a recent interview with The Register Citizen, he made it clear that "government can't grow your business," only create the right environment to allow business owners to grow and create jobs.

While Democratic leaders in Hartford are viscerally incapable from distraction by an activist social agenda, Ned Lamont presents a real-world view.

Regarding paid sick leave, the editors say...

Lamont is getting hammered by primary foe Dan Malloy over a cautious view on paid sick leave, for example. But Lamont knows what a career politician like Malloy is deaf to - that putting yet another mandate on business at this critical juncture for Connecticut's economy would be insane.

And apparently editors of this Litchfield County paper have recognized the tone of Malloy's nasty campaign...

Politics, of course, "is a contact sport." But something about the tenor of Malloy's campaign this time around has left a lot of people with a bad taste. From the over-the-top nasty focus on how many debates Lamont is willing to have. To the sound bite smears that Malloy knows were raised - and debunked - in Joe Lieberman's campaign against Lamont four years ago.

From the endorsement, on paid sick leave" . . . putting yet another mandate on business at this critical juncture for Connecticut's economy would be insane . . . . "

Where have I heard that before?  Sounds suspiciously like a Ned Lamont sound bite.  Or is that a CBIA sound bite.  Wait I think the United States Chamber of Commerce said that.  Or was it all the Republicans in the State Senate.

Working families need the paid sick leave bill.  Why did Ned give the right leaning Democrats cover on this subject?

Ned gave DLC Dan Malloy cover? (0.00 / 0)
shouldn't you be a little more appreciative?

Way over my head (0.00 / 0)
Way over my head Keith please explain - not about the paid leave bill, I already know you hate that - but about the cover comment.  Ned's against paid leave and Dan is a DLC'er?

[ Parent ]
You said Lamont gave cover to "right leaning Democrats" (0.00 / 0)
Isn't that exactly what Joe Liebermans DLC is made of?

By the way,I love paid sick leave and as a union employee always had it.My union brothers and sisters had to fight Malloys attempt to reduce our paid sick leave in every contract negotiation they had during Malloys Mayorship.

Got it. (0.00 / 0)
You love paid leave for those who have it.  I was talking about a bill to provide that same benefit to others.  I will cheer the day that Walmart and Target allow their employees to unionize.  Paid leave should not be a bargaining-chip. We need a law mandating paid leave for all working families.

Also. Do you work in Stamford?  Are you privy to the negotiations between the Mayor and the Stamford city workers?

[ Parent ]
Agree on that point re: sick days (0.00 / 0)
But while doing my morning Wabbing (Wab - Work Avoidance Behavior), I found this 2004 article:

While mayor, Mr. Malloy has accepted campaign contributions from individuals and businesses that do business with Stamford, a common practice that is legal in the absence of a quid pro quo.
(snip)
Nonetheless, some of those donations are now under scrutiny because of their timing or size. For instance, people associated with Haven Healthcare, a management company looking to renew its contract at the city's nursing home, raised $31,550 for the Malloy campaign in May, three days after they responded to the city's request for proposals on the new contract.

The hits keep coming. What political blog was mentioned on page 37 of this State Elections Enforcement Commission Complaint against Malloy by Christopher Healy?

One more, and it's time to get going.....

Who's been called "The King of Pay to Play?" (hint - his name rhymes with "annoy").

What the Register-Citizen seems to be unaware of (4.00 / 1)
is that paid sick leave saves companies money.
Improved public health will save millions of dollars
Paid sick days reduce the spread of serious contagious diseases such as the flu and norovirus.

Workers will save $8.2 million annually on flu-related costs and short-term nursing home stays for relatives.

Getting timely medical care will improve care and treatment, reducing costs for providers and patients.•

The Register Citizen Endorses Dan Malloy (0.00 / 0)
From the endorsement.  "While Democratic leaders in Hartford are viscerally incapable from distraction by an activist social agenda, Ned Lamont presents a real-world view."

Sounds like Litchfield Register Citizen will not be endorsing a Democrat in the general election.  Score one for Foley.  By endorsing Ned they are playing a game of snooker - moving a ball to bad position and causing the opponent to foul.

Yes, I'm pretty sure I'm right.  The Litchfield Register Citizen wants Ned to win because they think Foley can beat him.  What a fantastic endorsement for Dan Malloy.

Lamont and Malloy (0.00 / 0)
All this intensity of 2 very moderate candidates?

Yes I want to hear more about . . . (0.00 / 0)
Foley, Ferdele, and Oz Grebel.

You could write a piece about them (0.00 / 0)
couldn't you?

Who has the paper endorsed (0.00 / 0)
in the prior 4 gubernatorial elections?

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

Hard to Fathom (0.00 / 0)
See Dan Malloy's interview with the editorial board of the Register Citizen on Wednesday July 28, 2010.
There is an excellent article by Jenny Golfin on the paper's website, registercitizen.com, with videos from the interview.

Those who care about Connecticut should see these videos. Then they will see why I support Malloy.

You just have to watch the lies Malloy is spreading about Lamont to know what kind of scumbag Malloy is (0.00 / 0)
and then you will see why I support Ned Lamont.
