Rob Simmons to drop out of Senate race

Why you want to mess things up for me, Linda?

From Daily Kos, via Mark Pazniokas at The CT Mirror.

I'll look around for the time.

After Simmons lost to McMahon at the convention he knew it was over. The Republicans turned to a rookie candidate with deep pockets.

A Republican source says Rob Simmons told his staff Monday he will end his campaign for U.S. Senate at a press conference today in New London.

On Monday night, Simmons called a press conference for 9 a.m. in New London to make an "announcement on the future of the campaign for U.S. Senate," immediately prompting speculation he was dropping out [...]

[A] source who declined to be identified said that Simmons' staff was told the campaign was ending, bowing to the difficulties of fighting the best-financed candidate in Connecticut history: McMahon, a co-founder of World Wrestling Entertainment who is seeking office for the first time.

McMahon, who had contributed $16 million to her campaign by May 1, is on pace to break all campaign spending records in the state by the Fourth of July. She says she has budgeted $50 million of her personal fortune in an effort to become the first Connecticut Republican to win a Senate race since Lowell P. Weicker Jr. in 1982.

UPDATE: The Richard Blumenthal campaign issued the following statement regarding GOP senate nominee Linda McSteriods:

The people of Connecticut face a clear, stark choice between Dick Blumenthal, who will continue standing up for them against powerful interests on issues that matter, like their jobs and health care, and Linda McMahon's self interest that's gained her multi-million dollar profits peddling steroid-fueled violence to our kids, exploiting her workers, and obstructing investigations into possible crimes under her watch

Other Crosshairs for Simmons? (0.00 / 0)
Can't imagine he will just slink away.

There are fun aspects to running against Simmons (any video of him speaking...his do-nothing tenure as "State of CT Business Advocate"...his hawkishness...his arrogance...) but look out for him to slither into another spotlight.

"I am not a Blogger...But I play one on the internet."

Simmons probably has a free pass for 2012 (0.00 / 0)
And with a million left in the bank he has a decent start to taking on Lieberman. If that is Lieberman's ego thinks he has a chance against a Republican and a strong Democrat.

I wonder if he still has that stupid Teabag (0.00 / 0)
in his jacket pocket. Rob Simmons hug of the teabaggers ended his political career. He'll never get another R nomination for any office.

Simmons didn't get a return hug (0.00 / 0)
He asked for Jim DeMint's endorsement and never got it.  The Washington Times called him a Tea Party poser.

A true Teabagger might find traction in the strange politics of some small CT towns but not statewide.  Imo, CT conservatives come in too many variations to attract and satisfy Tea Party activists.

I also think Simmons just doesn't bring enough to the table for Republicans.  McMahon is self-funded and promises to whack Blumenthal with a chair repeatedly, which is all the CT Republicans I know really want.

That's Too Bad - I'm Going To Miss His Attacks On Linda (0.00 / 0)
Only one is still up on his site - here.

But here are some more classic Simmons attacks - well worth reading, viewing (great videos!) and saving:

Simmons campaign (0.00 / 0)
Obviously I wasn't going to vote for either Simmons or McMahon,  but Simmons ran a slimy campaign with nothing but personal attacks against WWE and Linda McMahon.  He deserved to lose.  I hope Blumenthal takes a lesson from this and doesn't make the entire campaign "WWE is bad."

Linda McMahon's Entire Record Is The WWE (4.00 / 1)
She claims a lot of credit for building the business, and there is no reason in the world not to look at what kind of business it is.

Let's be fair (4.00 / 1)
I don't think any of us liked it when Republicans tried to make political hay out of Al Franken's old Saturday Night Live sketches.  Let's give the same treatment here.

Let's judge her on her stances on the issues.  I will be clear.  I do not support her stances.  I will not be voting for her under any circumstance. But let's not make this campaign all about who kicked who in the crotch and trying to blame Linda for every wrestler death in the past 25 years. There's a lot of problems with the industry and a lot of misinformation out there. People want to blame a lot of things on WWE that it doesn't deserve.

Judge Linda on what Linda says and does as a candidate and not what her husband does or what Chris Benoit did or how many pills Eddy Fatu took after he'd been fired.

We'd ask nothing less of a progressive candidate running for office to be judged on their positions.

I know I'm in the slim minority here, but I'm getting pretty tired of WWE being dragged through the mud all the time.  This is not meant to support her as a candidate.  But cheap shots aren't welcome against our people and we have to be better than that when we're running against a Linda McMahon.

Interesting That He's Leaving His Name on The Ballot (0.00 / 0)
and not endorsing Linda - see his attacks on her above!

Name on the ballot (0.00 / 0)
If I were Simmons, I would be leaving my name on the ballot and saving my cash.  If McMahon self-combusts and has to withdraw from the race, Simmons is well positioned.  If she doesn't self-combust.  Simmons is wise to keep his name out there and his powder somewhat dry in preparation for 2012

No surprise- this is how Republicans operate (0.00 / 0)
Republicans are an authoritarian lot who believe in doing what they're told by the party hierarchy and at all costs avoiding competing with themselves.  For that matter, they do not believe in giving their own party's voters a choice of candidates.

Look for several more who qualified to primary to drop out.

Wonder if he'll seek a rematch vs. Courtney? (0.00 / 0)
Don't even know if he can qualify for that ballot still, but it would be interesting. Assume he could petition his way on.

Simmons is leaving... (0.00 / 0)

himself wide open here to a kick in the crotch.

But let justice roll down like waters...Amos 5:24a
