Chicken Merrick! (And the likely reason he ran away...)

by: AndersonScooper

Thu May 20, 2010 at 22:43:04 PM EDT

(I don't recall hearing anything about Mr. Anti-War Merrick! Alpert during the 2006 primary between Ned Lamont and Warhawk Joe LIEberman. I guess this post explains things...   - promoted by ctblogger)

Since Merrick has been positioning himself constantly as the anti-war candidate, I went to find him at a New Haven DeanForAmerica meeting to ask him a question or two about where he was politically from the fall of 2002, up through the epic Lamont-Lieberman battle during the summer of 2006.

Never did I imagine it possible, that Merrick Alpert, --the guy who sent rubber Chickens to the press, and a man in a Chicken costume to various Blumenthal events, -- would not take a question or two from me! When there were only four of us in attendance!

More below the fold:

AndersonScooper :: Chicken Merrick! (And the likely reason he ran away...)
The video is from our April DFA meeting. I haven't been that active a member lately, but I started with the New Haven DFA back in April of 2003, going to Iowa and New Hampshire for Howard! I built a "The Doctor is In" booth, I made 36 contributions before maxing out, I have my orange beanie, and I'm buddies with Jim Dean.

For this special meeting, I had the time wrong and accidentally showed up half an hour late. However, I sat and listened for nearly thirty minutes, as Alpert sought to burnish his anti-war creds with DFA leaders Justin Paglino and Aaron Goode.

About ten minutes before this video, (and Merrick's abrupt departure), I started raising my hand to ask a question or two  for the record.

My questions weren't that rough:

A. If Alpert doesn't get 15% at Convention, will he call it quits? Or will he pay for signature gathering?

B. Wasn't he being a little opportunistic with the anti-war stuff? And could he give us  more detail as to where he was, and what he did, from the fall of 2002 through the Lamont-Lieberman battles. (no, I did not remember seeing him at any of our pro-Dean, anti-war, activities.)

But the mere act of me raising my hand made Merrick visibly uncomfortable, (maybe it was Chuck Swirsky to my left, in a yellow IAFF Dodd t-shirt, I dunno...) So when I finally insisted on my turn, Merrick said he needed a glass of water, .... and then when he came back, he declared the session over. And literally ran away!

So why did Merrick run away? Honestly, afterwards, Aaron, Justin and I were all left scratching our heads. It just didn't add up!

However, after a couple of minutes of brainstorming, someone said I should Google his campaign contributions, which I did. And indeed, there was the smoking gun, the answer to why the guy who walked across the entire state of Connecticut -- to protest our involvement in Afghanistan,  -- suddenly turned tail, and ran away.

Yep, on August 5th 2006, a couple of days before the historic primary... when polls were showing Ned Lamont would win.... Merrick Alpert gave Joe Lieberman $1000, and a wink of support, encouraging him to wage a fall re-match as an independent!

Good job, man.

"I am not a Blogger...But I play one on the internet."

I guess that helps explain (0.00 / 0)
Why Merrick was against Dodd and now is against Blumenthal.

Somebody should ask him if he is going to support the Democratic Party nominee in the general...

That contribution to Lieberman (0.00 / 0)
was made one day defore the Lieberman/Lamont primary if I am remembering Correctly.

Merrick Alpert is as phoney as the day is long.I wouldn't vote for him if he was running for dog catcher.

Anderson Scooper great post (0.00 / 0)
Wow Merick wasn't very polite. Super job exposing this candidate.

Excellent work, Anderson, but one question.... (0.00 / 0)
"IAFF", as in "IAFF Dodd"?  Please forgive me for my ignorance of contemporary internet (?) acronyms.

A contribution to ... (0.00 / 0)

the Bush Administration's favorite pro war Democrat is painful for me to contemplate. I agee with Alpert's view of the war in Afghanistan and hoped it was genuine.

That some in this community supported this Fox News Democrat I found to be appalling. And still do.

That was gracious of you... (0.00 / 0)

I am sorry to sully the purity of this community. Please try to understand that some of us get frustrated by Progressives who seem to believe that Centrist Democrats are the answer, rather than part of the problem.

Sorry to sound mean but,Merrick is today and always was a Poseur (0.00 / 0)
The fact some here were so easily fooled doesn't suprise me on iota.

If Alpert thought he could advance his political career by advocating invading Canada he'd call for that.

There is a lesson here.

Next time the progressive Dems  in someones own home town call someone a schmuck and a phoney, believe them.

Amen brother, Amen! (0.00 / 0)
And of course we all want to hear the rights things from our candidates. But sometimes actions speak louder than words!

What you say... (0.00 / 0)

may be true. I don't know. I based my support on the positions Alpert took. If I was naive, it was in hoping for a candidate who seemed to me to be staking out the more progressive territory. In hindsight I think I glossed over the Fox News angle in my liking what Alpert was saying on the issues. I definately have second thoughts on that... One thing is for sure though, Alpert or anybody else who was critical of Chris Dodd was going to earn the enmity of his chorus of fan boys, both here and elsewhere.

I would never vote  for or give money to anyone  who supported LIEberman

Who will you support then? (0.00 / 0)
As Blumenthal has also given money to Lieberman.
