As expected, today at the State Capitol, Dan Malloy announced that he's picked State Comptroller Nancy Wyman as his running mate.

Here's how the announcement is playing out online...

CTNewsJunkie

Malloy, who has been campaigning almost since his failed bid for governor in 2006, has had his eyes set on Wyman for at least the past two years.

"The way our state has been run is a problem and who year after year, quarter after quarter, month after month had the clarion call to say that we had to change direction. That we had to have government that was more sustainable. Who did that? Who knows more about that than..." Malloy said. The crowd gathered on the east side of the state Capitol responded by shouting "Nancy Wyman."

By joining Malloy on the ticket he admitted that Wyman is giving up what is "giving up what is absolutely a safe bet." He said she could have been comptroller for the rest of her life, but "she has decided that the future is more important," Malloy said.

Wyman returned the compliments.

"Dan is a remarkable individual. A man who has a vision. Who has the understanding. Who has a heart. Who understands this state has to be changed. He understands fiscal responsibility," Wyman said as she went off script. "Dan understands it. Dan understands we have to change the way we're doing government."

After 16 years in a post that makes her a fiscal watchdog and critic, Wyman is risking a relatively safe re-election for what she says is a chance to help set "honest budgeting" from inside the first Democratic administration in a generation.

"He's inviting me to be part of that as a partner," Wyman said an interview today. "I've been doing it from the outside and not in those rooms where the decisions are being made. Dan said as a partner I'd be there."

[...]

Wyman, 64, a four-term state legislator and four-term comptroller, said she wants to be in a position to push for budgeting that addresses the state's long-term liabilities, a goal that often conflicts with political realities at the State Capitol and may yet again next year.

"I pushed for that for many, many years," Wyman said. "I still want to push for it - at the beginning of the budget this time, not after it comes out."

CapitolWatch
Dan Malloy stood on the steps of the state Capitol and announced that state comptroller Nancy Wyman has accepted his invitation to be his running mate.

He says he's been pursuing her for the better part of two years. (For her part, Wyman says she only decided yesterday that she would give up what many viewed to be the guarantee of reelection as state comptroller for the uncertainty of the governor's race.)

Wyman's move sets off another round of musical chairs with Democrats announcing interest in running for comptroller.

State Rep Tom Reynolds wasted no time announcing his intentions known.

State Representative Tom Reynolds (D-Ledyard) announced today that he will run for State Comptroller if incumbent Nancy Wyman joins the Dan Malloy campaign as Malloy's running mate. The Malloy campaign is scheduled to make a "major campaign announcement" at the State Capitol Tuesday morning.

Another names being thrown around include State Senator Gayle Slossberg, Waterbury Mayor Mike Jarjura, and Kevin Lembo. In any case, Wyman's move will make for a very interesting convention next week.

What's your take on the Malloy/Wyman ticket?

UPDATE: Via CT-N, here's video footage of the announcement.

Split your vote (0.00 / 0)
Nancy Wyman is very popular in Eastern Connecticut.  However (speaking as a delegate and a Lamont supporter), let's remember that we vote seperately for Gov and Lt Gov.  We can vote for Lamont AND Wyman.  They'd be great together.

My answer is the same as it was in the other diary (0.00 / 0)
This merger is an act of desperation by Malloy and only a close friend, like Wyman, would jump from a race where she is assured reelection to one that is an absolute gamble.  Malloy's internal numbers must have shown the Lamont-Glassman team running away with the primary and boosting Lamont's delegate count, so he had to do something quick to stay close.

At best, the Malloy-Wyman ticket is the policy wonk ticket.  That may sell well at the state convention but not so much in the primary and definitely not in the general election.  Just ask Al Gore and John Kerry how policy wonks lose general elections.  Also, this ticket combo would be another underfunded gubernatorial ticket against the well funded Republican nominee and since we lost the last 4 Governor races with underfunded Dem nominees, why would the outcome be any different this time?  What's the meaning of insanity?

I predict that Malloy will win the nomination at the convention, but his only hope to being the 2010 Democratic Nominee for Governor is to prevent Lamont from getting 15% at the convention and forcing a primary.  Malloy knows he'd lose to Lamont in a primary.  Even if he survives and wins, he'll be so depleted in cash that it will be a Pyrrhic victory for Malloy, who'd face a well funded Tom Foley in the general election.

I like Nancy Wyman individually, but I won't support her for Lt. Gov and a couple other delegates of mine have told me the same.

And a Lamont-Wyman ticket won't be as dynamic as the Lamont-Glassman one because Wyman doesn't like Lamont and there will be tension in that ticket; whereas, Glassman's and Lamont's personalities complement each other and give that ticket a lot of energy and an aura of hope that happy days will return to Connecticut.

All 4 Candidates Are Great (4.00 / 3)
Any one of the four would be an excellent Governor, far better than anyone the Republicans could possibly run.

Very good point Jon (0.00 / 0)
I think Jon has made a great point.  We need to keep in mind that all four are great candidates, and we all will pull together starting in August and work as hard as we can to give two of them the job. Let's not split ourselves apart too much in making this choice.

Very strong team (0.00 / 0)
Nancy spoke at our DTC and she was terrific. She has a great understanding of budget matters -- no one knows better -- and she gets how state government works.

With Dan's experience as a big city mayor, he has seen how state policies affect cities and towns. He knows the issues inside and out because he's been on the front lines dealing with them for the past 14 years. So it's a nice fit. They make a real strong team.

I thought you'd be sad (0.00 / 0)
That he didn't pick Lembo.

Lembo also would have been a great pick (0.00 / 0)
Lembo worked for six years with Nancy Wyman in the comptroller's office. Nancy is even better.

A Great Match - Kudos to Wyman for Saying Yes (0.00 / 0)
Malloy/Wyman is a strong ticket.  Dan will win the convention because he has worked for it and has convinced a great majority of the delegates that he is the best candidate.  Due to the Citizen's Election Program he will have sufficient funds for both the primary and for the general election.  Although, it certainly would be great if Lamont recognized that he would do better to run for Liebermna's seat in 2012 rather than force a primary for Governor in 2010.

If Malloy goes ugly and negative.... (0.00 / 0)
Will Wyman walk away?

Still hoping we don't get a summer's worth of fratricide!

Wasted Talent (0.00 / 0)
Lt. Governor is a step down for Wyman. If she was looking to move, she should have run for Governor. If some brave-hearted soul would care to nominate her for the top job, I will gladly second!

I can see what a Lembo (healthcare policy expertise) or a Glassman (contracting law, municipal governance) might bring to a ticket and to the state government that isn't already present, but Wyman's forte (fiscal policy) would be equally potent should the Governor choose to delegate to his (we are now guaranteed a male Governor) Lieutenant or to the Comptroller. Is she uniquely talented at wrangling unruly State Senators? I don't know, I just don't see it. I mean, if it's Lieutenant Governor or retirement, maybe I'd rather see her be the Lt. Governor. But that's a hell of a choice that, imho, we have no good reason to have to make.

That said, anything that brings her to town more frequently on campaign visits is fine with me.
