Hearst Picks Up WNPR Hit-Job Against Jim Himes

by: thomashooker

Sat May 08, 2010 at 19:02:36 PM EDT

The slimy hit-job from WNPR on Jim Himes is beginning to go viral, being picked up by our local right-wing newspaper conglomerate Hearst on its CT Elections '10 blog.

Posted by Hearst reporter Tom Baden, it reads:

"WNPR piece on Rep. Jim Himes and his campaign support from Goldman Sachs, his employer for 12 years before he joined a nonprofit that helped build affordable housing."

Of course, no effort made to debunk that piece of garbage, or to point out that Himes has been leading the effort to implement tough financial sector reforms.  Nope, all we get from Hearst is mention of "campaign support from Goldman Sachs".

You didn't want to know the truth anyway, did you?

Where's the reporting? (4.00 / 1)
There's a difference between getting donations from individuals who work at Goldman Sachs and getting donations from Goldman directly. Context also matters here. Jim has raised a large amount of money. What is the percentage of money he has raised from folks who work at Goldman? And more importantly, where is the evidence that these donations have had any influence on his votes, political maneuvers, etc.? Otherwise, the reporters know it's a dog bites man story (Fairfield County legislator receives money from people who work in finance), but through omission they let it seem like something nefarious is going on. That's not responsible journalism.

And to say he spent 12 years at Goldman "before he joined a nonprofit that helped build affordable housing" makes it sound like he spent a couple of months on an advisory board to the local YMCA. How hard would it have been to write: "Himes spent 12 years at Goldman Sachs before spending six years leading the New York office of Enterprise Community Partners, a nonprofit developer of affordable housing."
