Meet the new face of the GOP

by: ctblogger

Tue Mar 23, 2010 at 20:14:08 PM EDT

A new Harris Poll reinforces the notion that most people in the Republican Party are lunatics.

  • 67 percent of Republicans (and 40 percent of Americans overall) believe that Obama is a socialist.
  • 57 percent of Republicans (32 percent overall) believe that Obama is a Muslim
  • 45 percent of Republicans (25 percent overall) agree with the Birthers in their belief that Obama was "not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president"
  • 38 percent of Republicans (20 percent overall) say that Obama is "doing many of the things that Hitler did"
  • Scariest of all, 24 percent of Republicans (14 percent overall) say that Obama "may be the Antichrist."

The poll, which surveyed 2,230 people right at the height of the health-care reform debate, also clearly shows that education is a barrier to extremism. Respondents without a college education are vastly more likely to believe such claims, while Americans with college degrees or better are less easily duped. It's a reminder of what the 19th-century educator Horace Mann once too-loftily said: "Ignorance breeds monsters to fill up the vacancies of the soul that are unoccupied by the verities of knowledge."

The full results of the poll, which will be released in greater detail tomorrow, are even more frightening: including news that high percentages of Republicans-and Americans overall-believe that President Obama is "racist," "anti-American" "wants the terrorists to win" and "wants to turn over the sovereignty of the United States to a one-world government." The "Hatriot" belief that Obama is a "domestic enemy" as set forth in the Constitution is also widely held-a sign of trouble yet to come. It's the same claim made by Marine Lance Corporal Kody Brittingham in his letter of intent to assassinate the President Obama.

During the last year, myself and several members of the MLN community have photographed and videotaped people at several teaparty events who share the disturbing mindset that's reflected in the poll.

To add insult to injury, last Saturday, while attending yet another teabagger health care protest (sponsored hosted by the local anti-immigrant, xenophobia hate-group in Danbury), this weekend, this lovely threat against me was placed on my car.

...and no, that word is not Nissan.

The party of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh have shown their true colors since Barack Obama became the Democratic nominee for President. This results of this poll represent the Republican Party which gave us the derogatory slurs directed at members of Congress, insane outburst at Congressman Chris Murphy and Congressman Jim Himes' town hall meetings, and the desecration of 9/11.

In short, this level of bullshit from the new mainstream of the GOP should not be tolerated. Unfortunately, the silence from leaders in the Republican Party (both on a national and state level) speaks volumes.

(before you say anything about the threat made against me, I filed an incident report with the police department)

Please tell me you reported this to the police (0.00 / 0)
I really hope you called the police-- I suspect you did, but as the paranoid blogger, I feel the need to remind you to call the police and put those losers behind bars.

Oops (0.00 / 0)
Didn't see the italicized text below your story. My bad, but the concern still stands.

It's the silence that upsets me most (4.00 / 1)
Silence from the mainstream GOP members who even when you ask them to condemn these kinds of incidents just plain won't or come up with some kind of defensive excuse. There IS NO EXCUSE, and to watch this kind of hatred and bigotry in silence is to be a part of the problem.

When the Anne Frank exhibition came to Greenwich in 2003, I was a docent, and that was exactly the lesson we were trying to get across to the kids when we took them through the exhibition showing the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany and the war against Jews, Gypsies, the disabled, homosexuals, etc. It didn't happen all at once. It happened incrementally, because otherwise good people stayed silent while each outrage was perpetrated.

BTW, this is exactly why I unlisted my phone number after I got some crazy letter at my old house.

Was that threat written on the back of a parking violation? Was it one of those phony things that people put on someone's windshield if they take two spaces or park in a handicapped spot?

I'd guess that the moron probably earned the thing by being an arrogant asshole, and when he wanted to write the threat he grabbed the first piece of paper he could find in his car.  I'm surprised he didn't compose his little screed on the back of his vehicle registration or insurance card!

It was a fake parking ticket (0.00 / 0)
Your right Bob, it was one of those phony things people put on windowshields.

Don't worry, it won't take long to find the coward who placed this nonsense on my car. There were only 18 teabaggers at the event and I know every single one of them.

Good sleuthin' CT Bob.

I once got a windshield note about me being a Socialist (which my mother says is "a step up") but it turned out to be a joke from my DTC Chair. This looks more serious, since it includes the Nissan slur and the reference to British kindling. (I am using these cheeky terms since it makes me physically ill to retype the actual N- and F- words.)

Of course, everyone in the Danbury police force is particularly mindful of any bigotry or threats against citizens in the area, right?

Speaking of sleuthin'... (0.00 / 0)
Someone with hand writing as distinctive as this character's (look at the g's) shouldn't be too difficult to track down.

I know what I'll do!  At the next tea party I'll offer to cook everyone breakfast, but they'll have to write down their orders from this menu:

Ham and eggs
Bacon and eggs
Eggs and eggs

Such fine, upstanding citizens. (0.00 / 0)
And they are real ladies and gentlemen... In the tradition of the slave-owner kind of way. The only kind of "Patriot" that deserves to walk around telling everyone else they are not real Americans.

Across the country they are coordinating their efforts, attacks and violence to intimidate activists, minorities, Politicians and even just regular Joe and Susie Sixpack because we may disagree with them and we need to be taught that they are right...

But it isn't terrorism! Oh, no... Not from them.

Just some good old fashioned American fun.

I'm so sorry that you had to go through this.  People like you--reporting, blogging, CARING about our state and our world--should be given accolades and rewards, not have to go through this kind of attack.  I hope the gratitude of your readers is some tiny compensation.  Thank you for all you do.
