McMahon's $ Buys 1st Place Among Republicans, But Blumenthal Beats Her 2-1

by: Jon Kantrowitz

Wed Mar 17, 2010 at 10:22:46 AM EDT

Linda McMahon, who was behind 10-points two months ago, now leads Rob Simmons 44 - 34 percent in the Republican primary for the Connecticut U.S. Senate contest, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

This reverses a 37 - 27 percent Simmons lead in a January 14 survey.   In this latest poll,  Peter Schiff has 9 percent, with 12 percent undecided.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal tops Merrick Alpert 81 - 6 percent in a Democratic Senate primary and stomps his Republican opponents:

• 61 - 28 percent over McMahon, compared to 64 - 23 percent January 14;

• 62 - 26 percent over Simmons, compared to 62 - 27 percent;

• 64 - 21 percent over Schiff, compared to 66 - 19 percent.

Blumenthal gets a 79 - 13 percent approval rating, continuing a 10-month string of approval ratings of 78 points or higher, and a 70 - 18 percent favorability rating.

The next Connecticut U.S. Senator should generally support President Barack Obama's policies, voters say 56 - 36 percent.

Connecticut voters still approve 54 - 42 percent of the job President Obama is doing, compared to 55 - 41 percent January 14.

Here's the most discouraging number: 23 percent of Connecticut voters say they are Tea Party supporters, including 50 percent of Republicans,  and 25 percent of independent voters.

Lieberman Approval Still in the Crapper (0.00 / 0)

Buried in the press release (naturally for Quinnipiac) is the news that Lieberman's job approval rating remains in the tank: 39% approve, while 54% disapprove.  That puts him just a tad above his all-time low.  Even Republicans dislike the guy: 41% disapproval rating.  Democrats hate him: 67%b disapprove, versus 27% approval- a 40% negative margin!

When Dodd got down to that level, and for what was believed to be financial misbehavior, he decided to quit.  Lieberman is still telling people he's running for re-election.

Dick Blumenthal really needs to come out and tell us if he will support Lieberman for re-election either as a Democrat or independent.

McMahon is in great place (0.00 / 0)
There is almost no chance that McMahon beats Blumenthal.  The chance is so small that it makes no sense pouring money into this race.  (The other Republicans are putting other people's money into it; taking other people's money is pretty much par for Republican pols.)  But she's not spending for this race.  If she gets the nomination, it doesn't matter how badly she is beaten.  She will be regarded as a hero among the wingnuts, and will claim that she did vastly better than anyone imagined.  So she'll be a Big Man on the Republican Campus for years (unless she loses something else).  This was the formula for Rick Lazio (lost to Clinton big) in NY and (more worrisome) Christie Todd Whitman (lost not so big to Bradley) in NJ (until Whitman threw away her career by agreeing to be the token moderate in an administration of crazies).  McMahon's money will not help her this time, but in this race she will be given "cred" by the media, and she will emerge as a long-term headache for us.
