Greenwich DTC Chair Dave Roberson killed in car accident

by: saramerica

Tue Mar 09, 2010 at 11:07:46 AM EST

I write this in a state of shock and disbelief. I know grief is coming, but I still can't believe Dave is gone, so it hasn't fully hit yet. I just found out from a Greenwich Post breaking news alert that Dave Roberson, the Chairman of our town's DTC, was killed in an auto accident on the way home from the RTM meeting last night. No other cars were involved in the accident and police are investigating the cause.

I first met Dave in the cafe of Greenwich Library, where I used to go to write when I was still married and needed an escape from the atmosphere in my house. He saw me plugging away on my laptop in between sandwich bites and we started talking about writing (he was also a writer, more interested in Sci-Fi than the young adult angst stuff I write). When we moved on to politics, we found we had even more in common.

Dave was a tireless worker for Democratic causes. I just can't believe he's gone.

I can't believe this.

A horrible loss (0.00 / 0)
I can't remember exactly when I met Dave.  I think it was probably about 2003 working the Dean Meetups.  He was a great and tireless worker for Democratic causes and he will be greatly missed.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone mourning this horrible loss.

Sara - are you OK? (0.00 / 0)
Please someone post funeral info when it is available.

Just beside myself. (0.00 / 0)
Can't believe it.

I'll post funeral info as soon as I get the details. I'm sure there are many who would like to attend.

Incredible loss (4.00 / 1)
Dave was the kind of energetic and welcoming person who made people want to give some of their time to politics and activism. A heartbreaking loss for Greenwich and everyone who knew him.

Remembering Dave (4.00 / 1)
I'm stunned and so saddened by Dave Roberson's death.  He was one of the rare people in politics who cared passionately about issues and candidates and would discuss them happily, but who would also be willing to dig in and do the real thankless and unglamorous scut work of organizing and elections: walking neighborhoods, knocking on doors, making phone calls, doing data entry, wrangling volunteers, raising money, knocking heads, and cleaning up messy headquarters offices.

He was often the last person to leave an event, staying to talk and laugh and plot and scheme late into the night with whoever else shared his dedication.

Dave was pragmatic and sometimes bitingly cynical, but he had a determined optimistic core that led him to back and work his ass off for longshot candidates.  It was a joy to see his happiness at President Obama's inauguration and when Jim Himes was sworn in in DC.

Dave would often bring his elderly parents to events, and he was as devoted to them as to his political work.  A montage of images of Dave is running through my head now, and so many of them involve his mom and dad - walking with them in the park at the first barbecue in the Himes campaign, bringing them into Norwalk Lamont HQ, lamenting Frank Farricker's loss at an election night party, and all of us in Dave's front yard at the kickoff for the day when Jim Himes and volunteers walked from Greenwich to Bridgeport in a day.

Dave lost his beloved dad around Halloween last year, and I really feel for his elderly mother, just having lost her husband and now her devoted son.  He lived with his parents and took care of them, and I hope all of us who appreciated Dave as an ally and friend will reach out to his mom and make sure she is surrounded with care during this time.

He had too few years.

I have been thinking about Dave's mom all afternoon. (0.00 / 0)

I'm so sorry (0.00 / 0)
Dave worked hard for Democrats, for what is right.  He suffered the loss of his father just a few weeks ago.  The accident happened near my house at an intersection that isn't dangerous.

It's terribly tragic.

I just spoke to John Harkins (0.00 / 0)
and the funeral arrangements aren't set but it looks like it might be on the 20th. I'll be sure to keep you all posted.

Himes Statement on the Passing of Dave Roberson (4.00 / 3)
WASHINGTON, DC- Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) issued the following statement in response to the news of Dave Roberson's death.

"I am deeply, deeply saddened by Dave's untimely death and extend my sympathy to Dave's friends and family. Dave was my friend, my colleague, and my fellow parishioner. He was a good, thoughtful man, a dedicated activist, and a faithful citizen committed to bettering the world around him."

Greenwich folks - (0.00 / 0)
Does Dave's mom have a community there to rely on?  Anyone know?  Church or friends?  This is an unimaginably horrific time for her, and I am hoping she has people around her that will be with her, make sure she eats, etc.

Funeral/Memorial Service Arrangements (0.00 / 0)
The public Service for Dave will take place on Saturday, 20 March at 2 PM at First Presbyterian Church, Greenwich, CT.

Dave and his family are longstanding members of First Presbyterian. The outpouring of support for his family has been magnificent and of great comfort to his mother.

Go in peace, Dave.

Thanks, Dave. (0.00 / 0)
Dave was a remarkable person. I met him through politics, but he became a good friend. Wow, what a fighter. A giving and dedicated person who was always willing to lend a hand and give of himself. I remember countless nights discussing campaigns and politics that would go late into the night. His constant smile and jovial disposition made it near impossible to be anything but positive around him.

Anyone who knew him is a better person for it. And for that, thanks, Dave. You will be deeply missed.
