State Senator and President Pro Tempre Don Williams endorses Ned Lamont for Gov

Senate president endorses Lamont's bid for governor
Putnam, Conn. - Senate President Donald Williams, D-Brooklyn, Thursday endorsed Ned Lamont's candidacy for governor.

Williams is the highest ranking legislator in the state General Assembly and the highest ranking Democrat in the state.

"This election for governor will be the most important election for governor in our lifetime," Williams said during a press conference in Putnam.

The endorsement announcement's location in Putnam was symbolic: The town's position on the Rhode Island border is on the opposite side of the state from Lamont's hometown of Greenwich.

"There are 169 towns in this state, and I'm going to all of them to reintroduce myself," Lamont said.  "This is a very different race."

I heard this news on WINY 1350AM, Putnam's radio station, this morning.

This is a good boost for Lamont.  Williams is the highest ranking Democrat in the state and being from the opposite corner of CT from Lamont, helps show that Lamont's campaign is a statewide one.

Don Williams... (0.00 / 0)

was solidly in Ned's corner in '06 and as a Lamont supporter I am happy for Senator William's endorsement.

But let justice roll down like waters...Amos 5:24a

In the 2006 primary, Williams endorsed Lieberman, but yes, after Lamont won the Dem primary (4.00 / 1)
Williams whole heartedly backed Ned Lamont.

I wasn't much of a Williams supporter in the past because he was from my viewpoint always Mr. Status Quo, but in the waning days of the 2006 Dem Senate primary, a friend of mine, a Lamont supporter, met Williams at a wedding she had to attend at the last minute to take the wedding photos.  She had a Lamont sign in the window of her car and Williams came up to her and said that he admired many of the things Ned was doing in the primary.  He couldn't publicly change his support for Lieberman but after Ned won the Dem primary, Williams did wholeheartedly support Lamont's general election campaign.

I'll give credit where credit is due.  Sen. Williams wasn't a hypocrite, like Jim Amman, and it was refreshing to hear that a top CT Democratic leader was willing to be more open minded and of course support the Democratic nominee, even though he didn't support that candidate in the primary.

Williams joined Lamont as chairs of Obama's CT Dem primary campaign, and I think because of Lamont's primary challenge to Lieberman, CT voters were willing to open their minds and support challengers, like Obama, and not just rubber stamp the status quo candidates, like Hillary Clinton.
