Dan Malloy and the String of Polo Ponies

by: BranfordBoy

Wed Feb 17, 2010 at 10:24:34 AM EST

"When you get bored with the polo ponies, you run for office," he said.

Thus spake Dannel Malloy, candidate for governor. (Hat tip Saramerica)

Okay. I get it. You want to cast yourself as the Ed Norton in this race. The regular guy from humble beginnings facing unfair competition from those "Greenwich millionaires." Fair enough.

But if you're going to go that route, take a moment to learn from the pros:

As a non-millionaire ex-horse owner, I'm offended by Malloy's remark (4.00 / 1)
You don't have to be a millionaire to own a horse.

Connecticut has the highest horses per capita in the nation.  And many horse owners are middle class folks.  Sure if you want to compete in the Olympics, you need lots of money for horses, equipment and show fees, but for many horse owners, just having or riding our own horses is a childhood dream come true.

Do the choices made reveal the candidate's character? (0.00 / 0)
You are saying Dan Malloy made this positioning choice:
A regular guy from humble beginnings facing unfair competition from those "Greenwich millionaires." Fair enough.

It would appear so.  IMHO - What a supreme lack of imagination.  Instead of working to turn a disadvantage into a positioning advantage -- e.g. coming to the people, saying he is determined to be the voice of the people and wants them to join him in a pioneering gubernatorial campaign of, by and for the people -- honored by the possibility that small dollar amounts can propel a person of lower means to perhaps the highest office in the state (but only if each of us makes sure the campaign is about us/our voices, not about him, the candidate), we get sour grapes about fictive polo ponies and whining about how life isn't fair, because he has more money to play with than I do.

Why not say that the amount spent on campaigns is obscene and this candidate won't run a campaign that has no cap on it?  Why not explain why the campaign has opted out of the "obscenity race"?  Why not print everything on newsprint and tell people why?  People are fixated on the obscenity of the banks right now -- why not make the very thought of slick TV ads or glossy brochures an obscenity like big bank bonuses?

All options for a candidate who actually is committed to a small d democratic rationale for the public system.

We tell each other this every day (life is unfair -- yeah, I know).  So what do you think -- do we need to have a leader rise up among us with this ringing battle cry:

"Life is unfair!  My campaign is proof of it!  Vote for me!"

Last week I got an email that had something about Dan Malloy's childhood issues (which I don't recall) and rising above personal challenges.  I really was not interested -- I just want to know his record and what he plans to do with the personal challenge he is faced with right now:  raising enough money to qualify for the match.

When faced with usurping the Lamont campaign by taking up the torch of the peoples' candidate (when the runner stumbled on paid sick days) or using for the primary some slimy, well-worn tactics to try to upstage the competition that a certain number of the battle scarred Dem delegates will recognize as Liebermanesque, and not in a good way - - well, how a campaign positions itself speaks to its imagination and values.

I'm just asking the questions.  Up to you all.

And this is an anti slime, pro thoughtful positioning piece.  I still have not picked my candidate.  Will there be some new surprises or is the race over/can we all go home?

I thought that line was hilarious ... (0.00 / 0)
but I wish he had saved it for Foley instead of using it on Ned.

Stamford millionaire Malloy lives in a $2 million glass house (3.67 / 3)
so he shouldn't be throwing stones.

Someone may return fire and shatter his dream.

Hey Cap (0.00 / 0)
Are you interested in State Central? Your male representative is pursuing elective office, so there may be an opening.

Please can someone with fire in their guts (4.00 / 1)
and some actual concept of communications and new media strategy run for state central?

Although I disagree with every word that comes out of the guy's mouth, Chris Healy does an great job getting the GOP message out. He's everywhere. He's in every paper, he's tweeting, he's out there.

State Central's has a total of 5 tweets, the last of which was on April 28th. Way to use New Media, guys.

While Colleen Flanagan was on board, we at least had a counterpunch. Now we're back to the occasional communique about the JJB dinner or that recent pseudo endorsement that wasn't.

We've got smart people - we should be doing better than this. I have to wonder - what's the roadblock?
