Congratulations Jim Himes

by: Jon Kantrowitz

Thu Feb 04, 2010 at 11:03:10 AM EST

Jim Himes was the only Congress member from Connecticut to sign a congressional letter calling on the United States to press for the lifting of the blockades imposed by Israel and Egypt on Gaza.

The Jewish Daily Forward has the story:

The congressional letter, sent to the White House on January 21, expressed deep sympathy with the residents of southern Israel who were under rocket attacks from Gaza and stated that Israel's siege on the region was imposed "out of a legitimate and keenly felt fear" of terrorism. But it calls on the president to "press for immediate relief for the citizens of Gaza" via a list of measures that include allowing movement into Gaza and out of it, and by enabling citizens to gain access to food, building materials, fuel and other products that are now restricted...

Jewish groups from the left, including J Street, Americans for Peace Now and Rabbis for Human Rights, supported the letter with J Street actively lobbying members of Congress to sign it. The initiative also was backed by Arab and Christian Middle East advocacy organizations.

It was the right thing to do, and let's hope the moral courage Jim Himes has displayed here isn't a passing illusion.

I appreciate this (4.00 / 1)
... and I'll call Himes' office to thank him. The phone number is (202) 225-5541 in case anyone else wants to do the same. Nice move by Jim Himes.

Here's An "Attack" Piece (4.00 / 1)
This one comes from Arutz Sheva:

"Gang of 54" Congressmen Slammed for Censuring Israel

http://www.israelnationalnews....

Thank you Jim, for daring to be one of the "Gang of 54."

And I second the last sentence in Jon's Diary, because I was starting to get extremely cynical about Mr. Himes.

"If those in charge of our society...can dominate our ideas, they will be secure in their power. They will not need soldiers patrolling the streets. We will control ourselves." ~~Howard Zinn

Yes! Jim Stepped Up (4.00 / 2)
Here's a response that I submitted to several area newspapers to counter a blast by one Lester Freundlich of Stamford who blanketed 4th District newspapers with a nasty rant about Jim:

I am a Jewish woman whose daughter once spent a semester studying at Tel Aviv University; and I am very mindful of Israel's legitimate security concerns.  However, in a recent letter to this paper Lester Freundlich chastises Jim Himes and 53 other House Democrats for having sent a letter to the President urging - in a very measured way - that he advocate for the careful loosening of the lockdown of Gaza.

Mr. Freundlich seems to be of the opinion that the best way to protect a country's security is to beat neighboring citizens into submission. Since invention of the term "collateral damage," the militarily inclined have tried to sell voters on the erroneous belief that killing innocent civilians in an effort to defeat terrorism is a smart strategy.  Never mind clear indications to the contrary. . .

More reasoned voices have urged working for a two-state solution - however difficult this may be to achieve - as it would provide the best opportunity for Israeli security by lessoning the likelihood that terrorist organizations can succeed in recruiting young Palestinians and those who sympathize with their plight.

Finally, innocent Palestinian civilians, living and now trapped in Gaza, have been subjected to horrific hardship and ought to be entitled to the same humanitarian consideration that our country usually provides willingly to victims of other (various) disasters. Congressman Himes has done the right thing and deserves our thanks.
